Lawrence Raty

"Gone Fishing"
Lawrence K Raty died July 23, 2013 at age 84 due to complications from a fall. He is survived by his wife Pearl Butler Raty; his children Cynthia (Dunham), Tom, Robert, Melissa; and his brother Laine, seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Lawrence served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Swiss-Austrian Mission where he mastered the German language. For most of his adult life, he served in church callings including as Branch President in Germany and Vietnam. He started his career as an educator, but soon found his first love serving in the military. He continued to use his command of the German language in his service with 142nd Linguistic Battalion of the U.S. Army Reserve. His military career took him to many locations including Fort Ord, CA; Fort Bragg, NC; Fort Benning, GA; Fort Lewis, WA; Fort Douglas, UT; and Bad Nauheim and Augsburg Germany. In Ft. Bragg he trained as a member of the U.S. Army 3rd Special Forces (Green Berets). He was Airborne and served two tours of duty in Vietnam where he earned two Bronze Stars. He retired with the rank of Major. Lawrence loved swimming and diving. He was awarded a scholarship in swimming and graduated from the University of Utah. Later he returned to the U of U as a coach of the diving team. He obtained a Masters of Arts in Educational Administration, also from the University of Utah. Lawrence loved his family, fishing, and fixing things with tools. Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 3, 2013 at 2 p.m. in the Larkin Sunset Gardens Chapel located at 1950 East 10600 South, Sandy, Utah. A visitation will be held at 12:30 p.m. prior. Interment at Larkin Sunset Gardens following services.
