Lloyd Eldon Hansen Sr.

June 29, 1921 ~ August 28, 2013
St. George, UT-Lloyd Eldon Hansen, Sr., 92, passed away peacefully in his St. George home on August 28, 2013. He was born on June 29, 1921 in Spring City, Utah to Lloyd Herbert and Lucy Kunz Hansen. He was one of 11 children. Eldon's family moved to Lewiston, Utah, where he was taught the importance of family, hard work, and patriotism. He graduated from North Cache High School, where he greatly enjoyed playing in the band. He also attended Utah State University.
Eldon served in the U.S. Navy during World War II on the USS Pennsylvania Battleship from 1942 1945. He married his sweetheart Della Weber on June 25, 1947 in the Salt Lake Temple. They raised four children and one foster child in Tooele, Utah. Eldon worked as a welder and mechanic for the Tooele army depot, retiring in 1977. As a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints, he served as a bishop and as a counselor in several bishoprics, and in a stake presidency. As a priesthood leader, he also helped coordinate the building of the North Tooele Stake Center. Eldon and Della served a mission to British Columbia from 1977 to 1979 where he served as a Branch President and was an inspiration to many. They moved to Petersboro in 1979 and then to St. George in 2003. Eldon enjoyed chess, playing the saxophone (especially in an orchestra in Tooele), hunting, fishing, politics, horses, and playing games with his grandchildren. He always put family first and could often be seen on the sidelines of his grandchildren's sporting events. A hero to many, Eldon served his life with honor, conviction, and courage.
He recently said: "If people only remembered one thing about me, I'd want them to know that I love my family and want them to be successful in life. The greatest blessings and success in life come from living the gospel. In my ninety two years of experience in life, I've had an opportunity to observe many families. The families that live the gospel principles are the ones that wind up to be the happiest people in the whole wide world."
Eldon is survived by his wife Della; four children, Lloyd (Janet) Hansen, Craig (Gloria) Hansen, Dennis Hansen, Carolyn (Randy) Kim, and one foster daughter Rosemary (Dan) Giles; brothers, Clar, D'Vaughn, Ronald, and Gordon; 25 grandchildren and 54 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Lucy Hansen; five sisters, LaRue, Lucy Mae, Idonna, Gwen, and Darlene, and a brother, Jay.
