SUE YOUNG Obituary

Sue Marie Young Orem/Richfield With loving memory and joy in our hearts, we announce the passing of our fine mother and grandmother, Sue Marie Young, on October 3, 2009, at the age of 71 from complications of pancreatic cancer. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leland A. Young, Jr., 46 years ago and we celebrate their reunion. Sue Marie was born April 29, 1938, in Safford, Arizona, to Guy and Elizabeth Anderson. She was the third of six children. She married Leland A. Young, Jr., in the Mesa AZ Temple June 24, 1959. In 1963, when Sue Marie was 25 and had two young children, Leland was killed in a plane crash, leaving her and her brother-in-law, Alan Young, to take over the management of L.A. Young Sons Construction, Inc. Under their leadership, the company grew from a small, family-run operation to become the largest employer in Sevier County. Sue Marie was Richfield's first woman mayor--the first woman to be elected to any office in Richfield--and served for two terms from 1982-1990. She led the city in developing an industrial park and a unique indoor/outdoor swimming pool. She was appointed to the National Advisory Board of Small Cities Council. She served on and chaired the Utah Safe Drinking Water Committee and was instrumental in bringing safe water to many cities in Utah. She served on the Governor's Advisory Council on Community Affairs and the Utah Local Governments Trust Board of Directors. She was on the committee of the Camilla Eyring Kimball Educational Chair at Brigham Young University, and served on the board of directors for the BYU Alumni Association from 1978-1979. Sue Marie served on the Utah State Board of Regents from 1984-1989, and was the first woman to act as chairperson, serving from 1985-1987. She was also the first woman to serve with the Associated General Contractors, serving as secretary/treasurer of the Utah division. She was president of Sevier School District for four years and for three years she was chairperson of the State Advisory Council on Vocation Education. Sue Marie earned an Associates Degree from LDS Church College of Hawaii and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Secondary Education from Brigham Young University. She also received an Honorary Degree of Doctorate of Humane Letters with all honors and privileges from the College of Eastern Utah. Above all, Sue Marie loved her children and grandchildren. She supported them and never missed one of their sporting events, following them from Virginia to Phoenix. She was a dedicated fan of BYU football, rarely missed a game, and even threw a pizza party for a recent BYU-FSU game at her home while she was under hospice care. The Young family wishes to thank all those who have lovingly cared for Sue Marie in the past weeks, especially the staff of Alpine Hospice, for their compassionate service. Survivors include sons and grandchildren: Lee and Tonya Young, Seattle, WA; children: Tyler and Alisha Young, and Cameron Young; Steve and Susan Young, Orem; children: Colin, Tanner, Dylan, Hayden, Annie, and Caitlin Young; also sisters, Ann and Charles Jones, Phoenix, AZ; Jeanne Wilson and Harold Hubbard, Mesa, AZ; brothers, George and Paula Anderson, Shiprock, NM; John and Glenna Anderson, San Clemente, CA; Mark and Nancy Anderson, Provo. Funeral services will be held Friday, October 9, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. in the Suncrest 6th Ward (891 W. 130 N.) in Orem. Friends may call Fri. morning from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the chapel. Interment will follow with a graveside service in the Richfield City Cemetery at 3:30 p.m. Funeral Directors: Magleby Mortuary, Richfield, Salina and Manti. Sue Marie Young was a great friend and an amazing women. Sue Marie had that voice that made you want to stand at attention. especially as she cheered on her grandsons in basketball. She spoke her mind and made you strive to be your best, A powerful orator, she stood up for what was right, what was good and seemingly always had an opinion on the matter. I only heard her say, "I don't know?" when she wanted to hear what you had to say. With her great smile and personification she rarely held back. Even though all the odds were against her near the end of her days, I believed she would just fight on threw this terrible disease. She was an amazing strong women and we will miss that one of a kind personality.
