Melanie Laycock-Bastian Obituary

1954 - 2016
Orem, UT-Melanie Laycock Bastian, beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend, passed away on Monday, August 29th. She was undergoing treatment for Acute Myeloid Leukemia, which she fought bravely for 5 months, and was surrounded by her loved ones as her mortal life came to its end.
Melanie was born on April 1, 1954 to Hugh and Audrey Laycock of Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. She was the 4th of 5 children, having 3 older brothers (Bill, Brent, and Kim) and one younger sister (Roxanne). Her childhood was spent on the family farm where she learned the virtues of hard work, humility and gratitude, all attributes that guided the remainder of her life.
Upon finishing high school, Melanie made her way south to attend Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, where she earned a Bachelors Degree in Fashion Merchandising, and though a diligent student, Melanie was also frequently involved in planning social gatherings of all sorts with her classmates, earning her the nickname of "The Party Lady." Later in life, Melanie received an Honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters from Utah Valley University. In addition to her academic achievements, Melanie was a remarkably skilled musician, seamstress, and cook, and was quick to share her many talents to comfort or brighten the lives of others.
Having grown attached to Utah County, Melanie eventually established her family in nearby Orem and resided there the rest of her life. In 1976, she married Bruce W. Bastian and together they had four sons. The couple divorced in 1993 but remained close. Melanie was an extraordinary mother, and those who knew her best know her life was truly dedicated to her boys, and later to their families. She often quoted 3rd John 1:4 "I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth."
At her core, Melanie lived the principle of charity, and found purpose and happiness in giving of her time and resources to numerous local charities, church organizations, educational boards, and community associations. Furthermore, Melanie was an inconspicuous champion for several causes, including women and children in need, music and performing arts, and public education. Never seeking attention or acclaim, Melanie preferred serving behind the scenes, and felt most content in supporting the success of others. She was forever willing to accept assignments of any kind, and felt honored to be of assistance in any form. Always ready with smart suggestions, yet never overbearing in sharing them, Melanie's input was sought often, and her quiet influence made a lasting impact on so many over the years.
Melanie is preceded in death by her mother, Audrey Laycock. She is survived by her father, Hugh Laycock, her four siblings, and her four sons: Rick (Heather), Darren (Lisa), Jeff (Cristi), and Robert (Amy). In addition, Melanie was a devoted grandmother to 13 grandchildren, all of whom lovingly referred to her as "Mimi" and each of whom felt individually treasured by their doting grandma. Mimi was tremendously proud of her grandkids, seemingly attending every one of their games, performances, and ceremonies, and saw them as her greatest reward in life.
While our hearts are unquestionably broken at this time, we remain in awe of Melanie's courage, her grace, and her unending kindness toward everyone with whom she associated.
The Bastian family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses, and all others involved in her treatment and care during her final months at the Huntsman Cancer Institute.
Two viewings will be held for Melanie, on Monday, Sept. 5, 2016 from 5-8 p.m. at 240 W.1800 S. in Orem, UT; and Tuesday, Sept. 6 from 10:00-10:30 a.m. at the Orem Lakeview Stake Center, located at 400 W. 1800 S. in Orem, UT. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the Orem Lakeview Stake Center. Interment will be at East Lawn Memorial Hills, located at 4800 N. 650 E. in Provo, UT.
Arrangements entrusted to Starks Funeral Parlor. Online condolences may be offered at starksfuneral.com.

I have known Melanie for 36 years as we associated in different neighborhood activities and callings in our Lake view ward.
Her life story was beautifully written and is how I would view her through the years.. Always supporting others achievements
And good causes with grace and humility!
Melanie and I often had music callings together! We laughed a lot!
2 experiences where Melanie impacted my life was when she and our good friends the Collette family invited our oldest son Kade with them on
A most generous adventure to Washington DC. Giving Kade a once in a lifetime
Experience he never forgot!
Another was her Friendship and sponsorship of a Mrs. Pageant and platform for motherhood and womanhood causes that I challenged myself to participate in.
Thank you Melanie for your sincere caring of many!
You were valiant my friend!
Bless your sons and families To be lifted up by your legacy and beautiful memories!

Too many amazing memories to even count. Melanie was so good to me and my family over the course of the 40 years we have known each other. She has always been there for me, and was my earthly guardian angel. Now she is my heavenly guardian angel, as I'm sure she is for so many! Her love knew no bounds. She gave so much, and never expected anything in return. She did so without pretense. She was very humble and private, but touched more lives than I think she will ever know. Thank you, Melanie, for being my friend! Rest in paradise until we see each other again. I love you! You will be missed!

Although I seldom saw this very kind supportive lady, while instructor at BYU and supervisor of a computer system, her future and and later husband demonstrated his brilliance on computers to me with his Marching Band Formation preparation and demonstration software that became part of his degree. My associate Dr. Alan Ashton saw also this brilliance and they became cooperative partners in great and generous works including WordPerfect, a great contributor to many, and Melanie's support was essential to all this and will continue through her family and others that she has supported and influenced.

This family has been very kind and generous to many, some even unknown them, and this will continue, directly and indirectly. Great thanks to her for being a source and propagator of great and small assistance and kindnesses to many.

I was in Cougar Band with Melanie when Bruce was the director (1973 - 1975). She was one great keyboard player, a great contributor to the band, and a friend. I know I will miss her.

All that is said in this obituary is so true of my dear friend, Melanie. My heart is so heavy over her passing. She was truly one of the noble women--loving and generous to all. She shared her home for too many Relief Society and neighborhood gatherings to count. She hosted so many bridal showers and baby showers for the young people who grew up in our neighborhood. Her home and heart were always open to the "boys" who grew up here. Westview neighborhood has lost a great woman and friend and will never be quite the same. I love you and miss you, Melanie.

Many of my favorite childhood memories involve being at the Bastian home. What made it a special sanctuary for me and the rest of the neighborhood crew was the happiness we all felt while there. Although we were an unruly bunch, Melanie's patience and sense of humor made us feel welcome. Her warm greetings made us feel loved. She was an amazing mother to not only her four outstanding sons, but also to those of us fortunate enough to spend so much of our childhood in her home. I will be forever grateful for the positive influence Melanie has had on my life.

I loved spending time getting to know Melanie, growing up in the neighborhood & then especially during high school, hanging out at the house with Ricky. My favorite memory is eating brussels sprouts at the kitchen counter with Melanie because no one else liked them. She was always so gracious to us rowdy teens in her house all the time. What an incredible woman! My love & prayers to Rick & Heather & the rest of the family at this time.

This amazing woman has been such a powerful influence for good in the world. Melanie was one of the greatest advocates for children and public education that has ever lived in Utah Valley. She served for 16 years on the Governing Board for the Alpine School District Foundation. Through her leadership and generous support, she was instrumental in helping numerous children improve their reading skills with the STARS summer reading program. She also supported the arts as a means of enriching lives. Her quiet nature and humility endeared her to so many of us. She will be sorely missed. Her life is a powerful example of pure Christianity. To know her was to love her.

I have so many fond memories of Melanie and am so deeply saddened by her passing. I feel privileged to have known her and be counted among her friends. Her incredible boys are strong men of incredible integrity and faith. What an amazing legacy and tribute they are to an amazing mother. I love and admire each of them so much. Our sincerest sympathies and prayers to you and all the family.

I first met Melanie when Laura, her niece, married my son Marc and the Utah reception was planned to be at her estate. She was so gracious and helpful. I happened on her a couple of other times while shopping and she was equally as gracious. Your family has indeed been blessed and the gospel truths will continue to bring you comfort at this time of your loss. With my sincere sympathy, Sandy Allen
