Dorothy Stewart Obituary

Dorothy Veatrice Carrel Stewart 1918 ~ 2003   Dorothy "Veatrice" Carrel Stewart, age 85, passed away July 3, 2003, at her home.   She was born Jan 23, 1918 in Birmingham, AL to Frank Elliott and Myrtie Cox Carrel.Veatrice attended and graduated from schools in Birmingham, AL and then went on to continue her education at the University of Birmingham, and became a registered nurse.  She moved to Salt Lake City with her parents, and later met and married Lyle G. Stewart on Aug 15, 1960 in Provo, UT.  She was an active member, and President of the Garden Club for four years. She loved to dance. She enjoyed writing poetry, and received both the "Gold" and "Silver" awards,   and she and her husband traveled to Washington D.C., where Bob Hope presented her with a trophy. She was good friends with Danny Thomas and Frank Sinatra (the Rat Pack).  Veatrice served as a flight nurse during World War II, in the 8th Army Air Force Division.  While she was in the service, she was stationed in Anchorage, AK.  On Sept 4, 1964, Veatrice saved a 3-year-old Pleasant Grove boy's life, after he had fallen in an irrigation ditch, and was drowning.  When she was 39 years old, Veatrice was converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  She is survived by her husband, Lyle G. Stewart of Pleasant Grove; one sister, Jeanne Mock of Sandy, UT.  She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Frank E. Carrell, Jr.  Services will be Tues. July 8, 2003, 11 a.m., at the Battlecreek 1st Ward LDS Chapel, 1250 E. 200 S., Pleasant Grove, UT. Friends may call at the Ward Chapel 9:30-11:00 a.m., prior to services. Interment, Timpanogos Memorial Gardens Cemetery, 1000 N. 400 E., Orem. Services under the direction of Berg Mortuary of Orem.
