HOWARD STUTZ Obituary

Howard Coombs Stutz 1918 ~ 2010 Howard Coombs Stutz, age 91, retired professor of genetics at Brigham Young University, passed away on July 20, 2010 following a long battle with Parkinson's disease. He was born August 24, 1918 in Cardston, Alberta, Canada, the son of Joseph Reuben and Clara Coombs Stutz. While attending BYU in 1940, he met and married his sweetheart, Mildred Robison of Delta, Utah. They recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. After graduating with a Master's degree in Botany from BYU, Howard was awarded a PH.D in genetics from the University of California, Berkeley. As a dedicated Scientist he spent a long and productive career studying plants throughout the world including those in North America, Europe, the Middle East and Australia. He has published more than 80 scientific papers and recently completed a book on science and evolution. Howard approached life with unbounded energy. In addition to raising his family of seven children on his beloved farm in the Riverbottoms of Edgemont, he was a popular instructor and lecturer at BYU for nearly 40 years. He was instrumental in arranging with the US Forest Service to establish a formal research laboratory adjacent to BYU for the study of desert shrubs of the Western United States. For many years he worked with Utah International in New Mexico providing research and resources for strip mining reclamation. In 1982, Dr. Stutz and his wife, Mildred, established a perpetual scholarship award at BYU for graduate students' studies of desert shrubs. He reluctantly retired from teaching at the age of 65 but continued his research well into his 80s. Howard was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in many capacities including Elders Quorum president, Bishop, High Counselor, and Stake Patriarch. He approached every assignment with the same enthusiasm that he exhibited in his professional work. He has a strong testimony of the gospel and of God's love for his children. Howard is survived by his wife, Mildred; four sons and two daughters: Craig (Priscilla); Tom (Annette); Joseph Lanny (Lorna); Ellen (Mark) Landeen; John (Nicole); and Susan (Todd) Atkin; and by a daughter-in-law, Janet; 42 grandchildren, 64 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son Kent, and by his grandsons, Mark, Carl and Boyd. Funeral services will be held Monday, July 26, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the Edgemont Stake Center, 303 West 3700 North, Provo. A viewing will be held Sunday, at the Berg Mortuary of Orem, 500 North State Street, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., or Monday morning, at the Stake Center, one hour prior to services. Interment, Orem City Cemetery. The family wishes to thank Aspen Home Care and Alpine Hospice for their compassionate care. Condolences may be sent to [email protected].

Dear Aunt Mildred and Family,
As I reflect back on the life of Uncle Howard so many wonderful memories flow from my heart. Uncle Howard and you always shared your family and your love with our family (sometimes it was difficult to distiguish who belong to who). So many family reunions, Thanksgiving dinners, Birthday celebrations etc. where spent together. Camping out, tubing down the river, learning about different plants and trees, building bonfires all in the pleasant atmosphere of your hospitality and generosity. Uncle Howard's dimples and gentle smile and tender heart will be missed but know he is happily reuniting with family, friends and students. How blessed we are to know we shall see him again and feel his loving arms around us. God bless you and care for you during this difficult time.
With Eternal Love; Gail & Kay Smith

Dear Mildred & Family,
We have so enjoyed knowing & loving both of you as fellow 1st Ward members. I loved being Mildred's Visiting Teacher.

What a blessing Howard was to our oldest daughter, as he gave her a Patriarchal Blessing! He was a man full of the spirit & full of Christlike love.

He also spent time helping our youngest son,Brett, compile & label the infamous elementary school "leaf collection". He always made time to serve others.

What a legacy he leaves behind. We send our love to you, Mildred!

Uncle Howard was perhaps one of my greatest examples of genuine goodness. He is a person I admire and respect and am proud of my family ties with him. He brought honor to the Stutz name through his intellect, generosity and great sense of humor.
No fonder memories of my childhood do I have than the many times we spent with Uncle Howard and Aunt Mildred and their family, swimming in the Provo River, playing Thanksgiving football and the many family reunions at their home.
Paula and I want the family to know of our appreciation for Uncle Howard’s kindness to us through the years. As we will miss him, we also know he is enjoying his renewed association with his parents and siblings.
With love,

Dear Mildred and Family,
On behalf of my wife, Virginia, and our family, I send this message with love and respect. I spent my professional career as a plant geneticst and research admininstrator at the USDA Forest Service Shrub Sciences Laboratory. So, I not only was a recipient of Dr. Howard Stutz's key role in the estabishment of my place of work but also had the opportunity to learn from, collaborate, with, and honor Dr. Stutz. I also benefited from the assocation with several of his students with whom I also worked. Dr. Stutz was a brilliant scientist with many notable achievements but also a a caring mentor and friend to me and many others. He embodied a love of science and a care for others in equal measure. Our family also benefited from our association with Mrs Mildred Stutz. I well remember he taking extra time and care to help one of our daughters with a project. We send our condolances and best wishes to all of the Stutz family.
