ALAN FRANK Obituary

Alan F. Frank 1926 ~ 2011 Alan F. Frank, loving husband and father, proud grandfather, pioneering advertising executive, accomplished jazz musician, generous philanthropist, avid golfer, smart rummy, pilot, and funny and engaging friend, passed away on May 6, 2011. He lived a long and remarkably full life and will be forever remembered by his family and friends. Born in Salt Lake City on September 29, 1926 to Harry and Lillie Frank, Alan attended East High School, where he played violin in the symphony orchestra, sang in the acapella choir, and acted in many school plays-early training for a lifetime of accomplishment in musical entertainment. Alan was a proud member of the East High Class of 1943, whose sixty year reunion he organized in 2003. After graduation, at the age of seventeen, Alan enlisted in the United States Navy, where he was first stationed in Chicago, Illinois. There he met the legendary band leader Alvino Rey, who invited Alan to sing with the Big Band Orchestra he had organized to entertain American troops during the final years of the Second World War. Alan performed first with Alvino Rey's Big Band in Chicago, alongside such famous acts as the King Sisters, and later with other bands when stationed in Corpus Christi, Texas and Honolulu, Hawaii. Alan also worked during this time as a disk jockey on Armed Forced Radio. Alan returned to Salt Lake City in 1946 and enrolled at the University of Utah, where he majored in music. He continued to play in jazz bands-now on piano-and to work as a radio disk jockey on evenings and weekends. After graduating from the University of Utah in 1948, Alan was hired as the first television announcer at KDYL-TV NBC Channel 4, where he also ran the weekly variety show "Alan's Alley," performing and interviewing such touring luminaries as Nat King Cole, Stan Kenton, Count Basie, and many others. In 1954 Alan joined KUTV as its first program director, and the following year he partnered with his friend Bob Thomas to create Frank and Thomas Advertising. The agency's first client was Pete Harman, who at the time ran Harman's Cafe and would soon partner with Colonel Sanders to create Kentucky Fried Chicken. With Pete Harman's support, the agency-which eventually became Alan Frank & Associates-helped develop the local and national advertising strategies for the rapidly growing franchises of KFC. It was a relationship that flourished for over 50 years. Alan energetically led the agency, and oversaw its expansion into markets from San Francisco to New York City, until 1996. He retired in 2006 at the age of 80. Over these years Alan was also an engaged participant in the civic life of Salt Lake City, an active member of the Kiwanis Club, and a tireless booster for the University of Utah: he was a founding member of the University's Crimson Club and for many years drove a red and white Cadillac with University of Utah plates. He also continued to play music, most notably with a jazz quartet he formed with his wife Beverly ("The Beverly Brothers"), with whom he played many private and public events and a long-running weekly performance at Salt Lake's Manhattan Club. His funny stage banter, agile piano playing, and beautifully clear singing voice, will be remembered by his many friends and fans. With all of these accomplishments, Alan will be missed most by his family as a loving and supportive husband, father, and grandfather. He spent countless hours cheering little league baseball, soccer, and especially football games, travelling the world with his family, and freely offering the strength of his character and the wisdom of his experience. We will miss him more than words can tell. Alan is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Jules, and his daughter Patricia Frank. He is survived by his brother Robert, and three daughters from previous marriages: Susan Boswell (married to Todd Boswell), Julie Frank, and Gloria Frank. He is also survived by Susan's children Chandee Bond, Sam Bates, and Michael Boswell, and Julie's daughter Micah Morrison. Alan's wife Beverly, with whom he has been married for 41 years, survives him with three children: Susan Dahlstrom, Jason Frank, John Frank, and John's wife Melissa Frank. He is also survived by Susan's children Ally Marie Dahlstrom, Michael Dahlstrom, and Jack Dahlstrom, as well as John and Melissa's children Jackson Frank, Johnny Frank, and Samantha Frank. A private family graveside service will be held at the Salt Lake City Cemetery. There will be a public memorial and celebration of Alan's life at the Salt Lake Country Club on Tuesday, May, 10th, from 3:00-5:00 (2400 Country Club Drive).

My condolences to the family of Alan Frank! Many enjoyable times were spent with Alan at KFC Conventions and Ad Meetings! Alan would always put on the Dr. Frank FRENCH accent when registering at a crowded restaurant to get us to the front of the line! With his many talents his humor played a great roll in his reaching out to friends and his knowledge and intelligence cemented that relationship. God Bless and Rest In Peace Alan Frank! Ph

Susan, sorry this is so late. But I wanted to add my memory of Alan Frank from 1963-ish. I was a singer/guitar player as a 13 year old in a rock 'n roll cover band called the PoorBoys. I remember distinctly riding in the back of a big beautiful Cadillac on our way to Jackson Hole to play in some little venue where Alan had booked us. Oh the memory! God speed Alan.

Dear Julie, Gloria, Susie & Family,

What a multi-talented, musically gifted, highly successful man your Dad & our cousin was. I always boasted about how he came up with KFC’s classic slogan: “It’s Finger Lickin’Good!” Even pitched the idea to an NBC TV game show called “To Tell the Truth.” They called Alan to confirm and, giving credit where credit is due, he told them that it was actually his client Pete Harman who came up with that enduring slogan. But hey, he told the truth! KFC’s First & Foremost Adman. I really loved the guy. God bless the one and only Alan Frank!

Dear Gloria and family-
My heart and prayers go out to all of you in this most difficult time. The loss of a parent is very deep and profound. When I lost my father someone told me that you never get over it, but you do get through it. Over the years I found that to be a true statement. Alan was a wonderful man and I have so many fond memories of him. Many wonderful dinners, great conversation and above all the enjoyment of Alan's amazing sense of humor! I remember like it was yesterday having dinner and Alan mentioned that he was playing golf the next day. I asked if he would be playing at a specific course, thinking he would be impressed that I even knew the name of a golf course! He looked at me, raised one eyebrow and repsonded in his typical dry fashion, "Oh honey, ...I don't play PUBLIC courses"! It was so "Alan" He was a caring, giving man and I will always have a very special place in my heart for him. Alan was an inspiration and I feel that I am a better person because I had the honor of knowing him. My love to you all.

Jason, John, Suzi and Bev,

Our hearts go out to all of you during this difficult time. We are sorry we were at our son's wedding in Montana during the memorial. Alan will always be remembered as a man of dignity, discernment, hard work, humor, and a man extremely proud of you, his family. It wasn't difficult to see how proud he was of each of you as our conversations would quickly turn to how you were all doing and what new accomplishments had been made. His face beamed every time he would mention you, Bev. You are the love of his life. Please know you are in our conversations and our deepest thoughts. We love you and are always here for you and your beautiful family.

Dear Frank family,

I have so many fond memories of Al dating back to the late 50's and early 60's. My mom, Ivalou Greenhalgh Leonard went to school with Al and in the late 50's he moved next door to us on Oak View Dr. My 3 younger sisters and I would all wander over to Al's and he would entertain us with his wonderful piano playing for hours and I always made the same request and it was for Canadian Sunset. Al was a wonderful man and great neighbor and we will all miss him dearly.

Love and warm regards,

To My Dear Friends Gloria, Julie, Susan & Micah

Words can’t express the sadness in my heart for your loss. I only wish I could be there to comfort your grieving hearts. One of my fondest memories of your father was when we would go watch him perform. We had so much fun! I could see in his eyes how much he loved you girls and how proud he was of the women you have become. You are always so strong, kind, caring and compassionate. Your father was so blessed to have daughters like you and treasured the relationship he had with each one of you. I know for certain that we never lose the people we love, even to death. They continue to play a part in every act, thought and decision we make. Their love leaves a permanent imprint in our memories. That’s where we find comfort in knowing that our lives have been enriched by having shared their love.
Love You

Julie, Gloria, Susan and Micah,
Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers. Your father was a remarkable man, so gifted and committed to raising his lovely daughters and being both "mom and dad" to all of you for so many years. How he loved you all and his beloved granddaughter Micah. You were the light of his world. I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to get to know Alan during my teens when I visited with Julie, Patty and Gloria in SLC, later at Gloria's wedding when Miriam, my father Ed and Alan were all together, that was a hoot!!! Your father was so kind and he was able to put people at ease and I always felt welcomed during visits on Maui when your Dad was there. Alan will be remembered for his generosity, kindness, his wit, humor, sophistication, extraordinary musical talent and his exceptional visionary business talents. More than anything Alan loved his family and he loved people, I will cherish his story telling, his magnificent humor and his ability to love. Sending loving thoughts to all of you with great appreciation for the wonderful memories I hold of your father and grandfather. Heartfelt sorrow for your loss.
Sending loving thoughts,
your sister Kelly

In the summer of 1969 I had the honor of meeting Alan Frank through my dear friend, and Alan's daughter, Gloria. Gloria and I spent the day together that America landed on the moon. We watched TV together as our men walked on the moon that day. Alan was heading out to a "Take down the Christmas Tree" Party. I got such a kick out of his going to that party, seeing that it was July 20, 1969. A few weeks later, Alan had a trip planned to San Francisco and invited Gloria and I to take the trip in her father's private plane. Gloria and I were to spend some time in Sacramento, CA with a friend of Gloria's while Alan went on to San Francisco. After getting permission from my parents we headed to the private airport in Salt Lake City. I had never been on a plane and was a bit nervous. But Gloria was comfortable with the idea of us flying, and I trusted her confidence in her father's abilities. Off we went up into the sky. The plane ride went well until we hit the Sierra Mountains between Nevada and California. Suddenly the air turbulance was horrifying. My fear rose within me as rode the air turbluance like a giant rollercoaster. I looked to Gloria for comfort but soon realised that she was frozen with fear herself. Gloria had a hold on my pants nearly tearing them off of me. Knowing that she was afraid suddenly shot intense fear through me. I will never forget my first airplane ride. We landed in Sacramento and I was sure that I could not get back on that plane for the return trip. But after talking with my mother and father I managed to bring all of my courage I had to handle the ride home. Thank you Alan for sharing your beautiful daughter with me and for one of the most vivid memories of my life. God bless you Gloria and may you find great strength in this sad time knowing that you were adored and loved by an amazing man.

We grew up in the same neighborhood and the Franks were an anamaly, all girls - being raised by a single father - wow - that was amazing - I remember I couldn't figure out how that happened - I remember all the girls vividly and the suave, debonair dad - it didn't fit the usual Salt Lake City man - he was pure sophistication and the epitome of elegance. We were the lucky one to have known him and his beautiful girls - the girls will forever be his legacy, and you can't have a more wonderful tribute than his amazing girls.

I feel like I basically grew up in the Frank household. It was certainly my second home. I have such wonderful memories of Alan and what a wonderful father he was to his beautiful girls. We had little laughter in my home so anytime spent at his added such pleasure to my life. He will be deeply missed by so many. Julie and Gloria, thinking of you always.

Dear Beverly,
I express my deepest sympathy for your loss. Alan was a great friend and I will miss having the opportunity to visit with him. He was always so enthusiastic about everything that he endeavored to do or was asked to participate in doing. Unfortunately we were out of town and unable to attend the celebration of his wonderful and full life.

Dear Beverly, Susan and Family,
I was so sorry to read about Mr. Frank's death. Way back in 1983, he gave me my very first job in advertising. What a great two years full of nonstop learning experiences! (Not to mention monthly KFC birthday lunches!) It was fun to hear him play at the Manhatten Club, and to keep running into him over the years -- the last time just a few months ago. Many years later, I reconnected with Susan through NCL. My thoughts and prayers are with you all now.

Alan was a great man. A great musician/entertainer/spokesman. He had my rock group; The Poor Boys play a show with him in Pinedale, Wyoming the winter of 1964/65. We were kids, and he gave us a gig. He had a big heart. He performed at my Mothers Care Center, Arlington Hills.

Your beauty always freshened the days at Auerbach's...
And I commend Alan on one of the best decisions that he ever made, by being in relationship with you.

Dear Beverly, My condolences go to you and your family. Although you probably don't know me, I have known Alan since Bryant Jr. High and many years at East. His obituary lists our East High 60 reunion of 2003, but I also remember our 65 Class of 43 held in August of 2008 when my husband, Harold Jones and I danced with your Beverly Bros Orchestra that you and Alan played for us after the dinner. It was great. Many friends from Kindergarten on were there that night and some are even meeting together this week on the 12th of May. Alan and you have been great keeping us together by the many reunions Alan has organized. Thank you so very much!Sincerely, Kathryn MacKay Jones
