David Richard Franchina Obituary
1942 ~ 2013
Dave passed away at his home in Murray, Utah on January 28, 2013 at the age of 70 after a four year battle with liver disease.
He was the son of Raymond and Elnor Franchina and was born and raised in Jersey City, New Jersey. At age 17 he left home to attend Utah State University in Logan, Utah. The day after arriving he met his future wife, Gloria. They were married 47 years and had two children. Education and work were very important to Dave. He earned a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from USU, and a Master's Degree in Social Work from the University of Utah. He held various positions, including Warden, at the Utah State Prison in Draper, Utah, and at the Department of Corrections Administration in Murray, Utah. After 30 years he retired as the Deputy Director. He then spent the next 18 years working at the Utah Board of Pardons. Dave loved to travel and did so often. He said that physical gifts lasted a short time, but the memories of vacations with his family lasted a lifetime. He was able to take one final vacation with his sons to Alaska before he died. Dave also loved animals and had many, including his two favorite dogs, Cookie and Cindy. Above all else, Dave loved his family.
He is survived by a brother: Raymond (Betsy) Franchina, Logan, Utah; sons: Brad (Frieda) Franchina, Draper, Utah; Gary (Bonnie) Franchina, Riverton, Utah; five grandchildren: Zachary (Niki) Franchina, Ottawa, Ohio; Jordan Franchina, currently serving an LDS Church mission in Seoul, South Korea; Jaren, Laken and Dallen Franchina, Riverton, Utah; and one great-grandson: Oliver Franchina, Ottawa, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his wife (Gloria), parents, and three brothers who died as infants.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Edward Frech, Vista Care Hospice, close friends and neighbors.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 4 at 1 p.m. at Larkin Sunset Gardens at 1950 East 10600 South in Sandy, Utah. A viewing will be held from 11:30 a.m. - 12:45 p.m. prior to the funeral. Another viewing will be held at the same location on Sunday, February 3 from 6-8 p.m. According to Dave's wishes, his body will be cremated and his ashes spread at five specific locations in New Hampshire and Maine.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to support fallen peace officers in Utah. Please send donations to the Utah Law Enforcement Memorial, 5671 South Redwood Road, #9, Salt Lake City, Utah, 84123. Condolences can be made to the family at www.larkinmortuary.com.
