Obituary Condolences

Coach Donald Coleman Lay 1931 ~ 2011 Coach Donald Coleman Lay, 79, passed away Tuesday, August 2, 2011 at his home in St. George, UT of natural causes. He was born September 12, 1931 in Thompsonville, UT to Joseph Coleman Lay and Venice Bosh Lay. He married Mary Lee Daniels in Flagstaff, AZ on January 2, 1951. Their marriage was solemnized in the St. George LDS Temple May 28, 1960. When asked how he wanted to be remembered, he quickly replied "As A Winner" and this is his legacy. He was the last coach at Dixie High School to win a State Basketball Championship (1970), he won many Dixie High Baseball State Championships, he won many horse races, many rodeos, and was inducted into the Utah State High School Coaches Hall Of Fame. He loved to compete and was also honored by having the Dixie High Baseball Field named "The Coach Don Lay Flyer Field". He always claimed his biggest and best accomplishment was teaching his players how to win by being the best that they could be. He is survived by his wife Mary Lay, daughters Merry Dawn (Mike) Johnson, Mickie (Rex) Barney, Tami (Gary) Hess, and son Cole (Kristy) Lay, 14 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, one niece, and one nephew. He is preceded in death by daughter Shelly Lay, parents Coleman and Venice Lay, and sister Beth (Lay) Cuff. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, August 6, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the St. George 2nd Ward Chapel, 166 South Main Street, St. George, UT. Viewing will be held Friday August 5, 2011 from 6:00 -8:00 p.m. and Saturday, August 6, 2011 from 9:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. also at the St. George 2nd Ward Chapel. Graveside Services will be held Saturday, August 6, 2011 at 6 p.m. at the Thompsonville, Utah Cemetery. Arrangements are made under the direction of Spilsbury Mortuary, 110 So.
