EDITH LLOYD Obituary

Edith Ann Gunn Lloyd 1912 ~ 2011 Edith Ann passed away peacefully in her sleep at her home on Donner Way, Sunday, January 9th at age 98. She was born in Elsinore, Utah on August 1, 1912 to beloved parents, Frederick Horace and Wilhelmina Jensen Gunn. She was blessed with an ideal childhood growing up in Richfield, Utah with six wonderful siblings, and kind, loving parents of Mormon pioneer heritage. She often recalled fond memories of her Danish grandparents, Jens Iver and Inger Nielsen Jensen who were among the original settlers of Elsinore, and Frederick Thomas and Sarah Ann Gunn, immigrants from England. Her college days at Utah State University were cherished ones where she affiliated with Chi Omega Sorority, was involved in campus activities, made lifelong friends, and received a Bachelor of Science degree in home economics. During her freshman year she met Sherm Lloyd, a handsome and ambitious young man whom she married after graduation on September 25, 1935 in Washington D.C. The following year their marriage was sealed in the Salt Lake Temple. Four memorable years were shared in Washington where Sherm graduated from George Washington Law School. After a short time in Denver and California, they settled in Salt Lake City where they raised four children, Sherman Gunn (deceased), Kathryn L. (Frank) Richards, Diane L. (Brent) McMaster, and Elizabeth Ann L. Smith. Edith Ann was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where she served in the auxiliary organizations and spent her life serving and loving her family, friends, and community. She enjoyed meeting many wonderful people as she supported her husband when he served as president of the Utah State Senate and as a member of the United States Congress. Sherm and Edith Ann were a charming couple and had a full and happy life together for 44 years until he passed away in December 1979. For the past 31 years she has continued to live life with energy and optimism. Edith Ann will be remembered for her love of everything beautiful, nature, birds, flowers, music, her positive attitude, gracious homes, extraordinary homemaking skills, delicious food, holiday celebrations, her kindness, charity and love of life. She enjoyed swimming, diving, and playing golf with her family and friends. Many pleasant days were spent at her "summerplace" on the shores of Bear Lake where she served her family and friends for nearly fifty years. She especially sparkled on Christmas Eve with her lovely buffet dinner, elegant Christmas tree, thoughtful gifts, caroling around the piano, firelight, and the traditional reading from the Bible of the birth of Christ. Her siblings, Ruth Austin, James, Horace, Iver, and Ralph Gunn preceded her in death. She is survived by her three daughters, sons in law, sister, Wilma Anderson, brother, Thomas I. Gunn (Joan), sister in law, Nadine Gunn, 12 grandchildren and spouses, 30 great grandchildren, one great great grandchild, and many beloved nieces and nephews. Edith Ann left a remarkable legacy and will be dearly missed. Memorial services will be held at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple on Monday, January 17th at 12 noon. Friends may call between 10:30-11:45 a.m. The family would like to thank the many caregivers who attended to her so lovingly during her last few years. Interment at the Salt Lake City cemetery.

I have many pleasant memories of the Lloyds while growing up in Federal Heights Ward. Sherm was my scoutmaster and Sister Lloyd was always such a warm and friendly presence. Wonderful memories of all the Lloyd children and I wish you all the very best.

David & I would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family & friends of Edith Ann Lloyd. She was my "Aunt EA" but also my dear friend, for both I am grateful. I have many memories of her but will only be able to share a few here: our lunches at Marie Calendar; the summers spent at her beautiful home & cabin at Bear Lake; our walks at Red Butte Gardens and the drives we took up the canyon to Alta. She witnessed my wedding to David and signed our marriage license. I will always remember the twinkle in her eyes, her love for her family and friends & the dignity by which she conducted her life. I will miss her, as I know you will, too. With love, your niece, Trish

She will be sorely missed. I so enjoyed our telephone conversations and her excitement in her voice when she told of her family--grandchildren and all their activities. Dear Kathryn, Frank, and family, Nola and I have always felt good when we were in the presence of Edith Ann Gunn Lloyd, your dear mother. She was a kind and gracious person. (She left a remarkable legacy and will be dearly missed). Those are surely true words. Her legacy, and that of her husband Sherm, shows in the many kindnesses that people remember about them, and in the character of their children. It was only a few days ago that we met a person who has a cabin on the shores of Bear Lake. We met him at a "Chuck-a-Rama" in S.L.C. He was a cheerful 90 year old man. He said, "Did you ever know the Lloyds?" We said, "Yes". That was the beginning of a new friendship for us, and it was another great tribute to wonderful people who served others. Know that we love you and wish you well as you celebrate her life.
