Effie M. Garland Broomhead, age 90, passed away Tuesday, January 2, 2019, at the Alta Ridge Memory Care Center, as a result of declining health due to dementia.

She had a long career in the telecommunications industry, beginning in 1949 in Tucson, AZ. She attended Lamson Business College in Tucson, got married and was transferred by the telephone company to Los Angeles, CA. She continued to attend business school and was once again transferred by the telephone company to San Diego, CA. She divorced and remarried in 1972, at which time the telephone company transferred her to Salt Lake City. She continued to attend business school.
She ended her career with U S WEST as an executive secretary in 1990. She travelled a lot after her retirement and took great pride in her beautiful yard. When dementia started to affect her health, she was moved by friends and her sister, Ruby, into Alta Ridge of Holladay Assisted Living and was transferred in less than a month to the Alta Ridge Memory Care Center in Sandy, UT, where she remained until her death. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Farris (Bud), sisters Gertrude Kloth and Faye DeLoach. She is survived by sisters Ruby (Tedd) Garland, Johnson City, TN., Betty Weatherman, Augusta,KS, and several nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to acknowledge special friend Dick Gaddis for his advice, friendship and visits over the years. And the gratitude felt by the family towards Effie's long-time friend and adopted family member, Eve Mary Verde, is impossible to put into words. They will be forever grateful for the extraordinary care she gave to Effie and helped her deal with her health challenges in her final years. They would also like to thank the caring staff of Alta Ridge and Millcreek (now Signature) Hospice.
It was Effie's wish to donate her body to the University of Utah Body Donor Program. There will be no services held in Salt Lake City but a celebration of life will take place in Johnson City, TN at a later date.
