Fred Ray Hales
1937 - 2015
Fred Ray Hales passed away peacefully on March 17, 2015 in Salt Lake City, UT surrounded by his family. Ed Plum, as he was often known, will long be remembered for his charming wit, quiet manner, and kind ways. Fred made us smile.
Fred was born July 17, 1937 in Delta Utah, the son of Iman and Ferris (Ashman) Hales. He graduated from East High, received his JD from the University of Utah, and was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha. Fred married his angel, Jane Watson, September 12, 1960 in the LDS Salt Lake Temple.
Fred began his career as a systems analyst with IBM in Salt Lake, continuing in Helena, MT, followed by twenty-five years in Endicott, NY. He and Jane raised their six children in their Vestal, NY home: Joseph Watson (Janet Hilton), Jill Ellen (Craig Tingey), Christopher Kimball (Sharryl Ludlow), Sally Jane (Joshua Johnson), Holly Edythe (Greggory DeVore), and Stephen Iman (Mary Wilson). They have been blessed with thirty grandchildren and three great grandchildren who loved to play Crokinole, get a Whirly-Burly, or hear a cock-n-bull story from Grandad.
Uncle Phred made life fun for everyone from Cub Scouts to Single Adults to missionaries, all of whom he and Jane served with enthusiasm and loving care. In all his church service, and in his life, Fred found creative ways to reach out to help the one. He served as a faithful home teacher, a bishop, and a stake presidency counselor, regularly driving an hour each way to weekly stake meetings. Together he and Jane served at the Fullerton, CA Institute of Religion in 2004 and the Mormon Trail Center at Historic Winter Quarters in 2011.
He is survived by his wife Jane, their children, and his sister Sandra (John Knowlton). He was preceded in death by his sister Johnette (Stephen Fox) and his parents.
Friends are invited to celebrate Fred's life at a viewing on Sunday, March 22 6:00-8:00 p.m., at Larkin Sunset Lawn Mortuary, 2350 East 1300 South, Salt Lake City, UT, or Monday, March 23 10:00-11:30 a.m. at Winder 7th Ward, 4350 South 1100 East, Salt Lake City, UT. Funeral services will be held Monday at noon at Winder 7th Ward. Burial will be in the Salt Lake City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the LDS Humanitarian Fund, or your local public library.

Dear Jane, I learned of your recent loss and was deeply saddened.
Although I was never fortunate enough to know your husband, I know from knowing you that he must have been a very special man.
You were so kind and generous to our family when our mother, Berta James, died last year. I will never forget the way you treated us and helped to ease the pain.
I know you were a special friend to Berta and she appreciated you so much.
Please accept our deepest condolences.
Sincerely,
Jeffrey Brough and family

Dear Jane and family,
My deepest sympathy in the loss of your sweet husband and father. Words cannot express how much your family influenced my life. Fred and Jane were my role models for myself and my future husband. Of course you kids were absolutely the cutest! I wanted mine to be just like you. Dave and I are currently serving a mission, so we couldn't attend the funeral, but please know that you've been in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time. I will always love the Hales family. You truly hold a special place in my heart. Thank you for your superb example!

Dear Hales Family,
I am so sorry for your loss. I will always remember Mr. Hales as a kind and gentle man. I loved going to your house on Halloween---we wouldn't get a treat until we did a 'trick.' He made everyone feel like their trick was the best. Please know all of you are in my thoughts and prayers at this time.

Dear Jane and Family,
It was with sadness that I read of Fred's passing. He was a true gentleman and wonderful human being.
In the midst of my sadness reading the names of your children brought back so many wonderful memories of my teaching days at Vestal Hills Elementary School.
Knowing and meeting you and Fred was truly and honor. Teaching all your children was full of joy and feeling better about the future. Your children, and their children, and their children make the world a much better place.
God bless you!

Fred was seven years older than me. When I was a brand new deacon in Bryan Ward, I loved to be assigned to pass the sacrament in Junior Sunday School, because Fred was always there as a priest administering the sacrament. Fred participated in every song and would stand and do all the actions (like, Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes) with all the primary children. The thing that impressed me so much was that he never did this to call attention to himself. He just seemed to love participating.
I lived three houses up the street from the Hales on Logan Avenue. As a little boy, I can remember him playing Kick the Can with the other kids on the street on summer evenings. As a boy,I always looked up to Fred as great example.

No words can express our sorrow at Phred's passing. We loved his quirky sense of humor and cherish the fine example your family has been for us. I appreciated Phred's offer to sing "A Poor Wayfaring Man" if I was sentenced to jail for the citation the health department sent when I was Girls' Camp director! Glad it was not necessary, although I'm sure it would have been comforting. We feel privileged to enjoy the friendship and love of the Hales family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time. We are sustained by the knowledge that we will see Phred again on the other side of the veil.
Much love,
Esther & Ed Pettengill
