Garth Eames Obituary

1927 ~ 2011
Garth Geddes Eames, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away the morning of Tuesday, September 13, 2011 at home. He was born May 10, 1927 to David Greaves and Pearl Lorena Geddes Eames in Preston, Idaho.
He graduated from Preston High School in 1945 and joined the Merchant Marines. Later he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force and was stationed on Okinawa. He was called on a mission to England, where he came to love the country and its people. Returning to Preston he met Shirley Rae Robinson and they were married in the Logan Temple on April 4, 1951. In 1954, on a Veteran's Homestead Draw, they moved to Rupert, Idaho to farm. He found great joy serving in the L.D.S. Church. He blessed many lives through missionary work. He and Shirley served a mission in Charleston, West Virginia. She became ill and passed away in 1984. In 1987 he married Edna Lou Harper-Smith in the Los Angeles Temple and they served additional missions to Boise, Idaho; Spokane, Washington; and Adelaide, Australia.
Garth Eames was a man of faith. He will be remembered for his fine example of service, love, a soft spoken voice, good humor, and obedience.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley; his parents; three brothers and four sisters. He is survived by his wife, Edna Lou Eames, his sister Dora Deane Hall, and 10 children, 41 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 17, 2011, 11:00 a.m. at the Acequia 2nd Ward on 5th Street in Acequia, Idaho. Viewings will be held Friday 6 -8 p.m. at Hansen Mortuary 710 6th St. in Rupert, Idaho and Saturday 10 - 10:45 at the Acequia Church.

I will never forget going out with President Eames to teach one of our investigators, when I was a greenie in The Washington, Spokane Mission. We fumbled through the discussion together, but Wow! Was his spirit strong!

I love his soft-spokeness and gentle kindness. I always felt loved by him. I always enjoyed finding opportunities to make him laugh, too.

The missionary work on the other side of the veil will be stronger with President Eames on board!

I love you President! I'll see you on the other side!

It was such a privilege serving in Darwin at the same time as Elder and Sister Eames--what great examples you were to all of us, and you still are! You have blessed the lives of many throughout the world.

I remember what a very sweet, loving, kind, spiritual man President Eames was. I was a member of the Charleston West Virginia 1st Ward and he and his family were in my ward. I absolutely LOVED he and his lovely wife! I'm happy for their reunion, but sad for all those they left behind. Edna Lou...my prayers are with you.

My wife and I are moved deeply by the passing of a very special man (President Eames) whom the Lord called before the foundations of the world to bless of the lives of many. He was an exemplary man of faith, love, and genuine kindness whom all he came in contact. Beside every good man is a strong woman and we too express our empathy for Sister Eames and her example to all of us. Thank you for light and inspiration through the years we have known each other. God bless you both now and in the eternities.

I was very sad to hear of your loss. President Garth Eames was the greatest mission president. He was a man of God. I loved serving in the Washington Spokane mission with him and Sister Eames 1988-1990. It was very special to have him and Sister Eames come to my temple sealing 6 years ago. My condolences to his wonderful family.

I send my love & condolences to Edna Lou & the family. I have many special memories of Garth from our time spent together serving in the Adelaide mission together & of staying in the home in Rupert. He made me feel so welcome & had many words of wisdom to share. My first & lasting impression of Garth is of a gentle giant. His faith was very inspirational & strengthened mine. Thankyou Garth for touching my life, I feel so blessed to have met & known you. Much love! Jeanette Stubbs.

DeMar just asked about his good friend from his childhood in Preston. I went online and was shocked to find his obituary. He leaves many fond memories with DeMar and we send our deepest love.
