GARY HATCH Obituary

Gary Layne Hatch 1964 ~ 2010 Gary Layne Hatch passed away unexpectedly on May 1, 2010.Born September 15, 1964 in Salt Lake City, Utah to LaRelle J Hatch and Jacqueline Deanna Roberts. Gary had great gifts for learning and teaching. He became a university professor because he wanted a life of learning and to help others improve their lives. He wore his scholarship lightly, however, and was beloved by all who knew him, from esteemed scholars to the most humble Boy Scout. Preceded in death by his father, Gary is survived by his wife, AnneMarie, sons Aubrey and Carson, daughter Maren, his mother, and four siblings: Geoff, Deanna (Trump), David, and Bryan. Aubrey currently serves in the LDS Berlin, Germany Mission. Gary graduated from Bingham High School where he was Senior Class President, Sterling Scholar, and state debate champion. He served an LDS mission in Copenhagen, Denmark. He attended BYU as a Kimball Scholar and there he met AnneMarie Henrichsen. They married in the Mesa, Arizona Temple on May 31, 1986. In 1992, he received a Ph.D. from Arizona State University and took a position as a BYU Professor of English and most recently as Associate Dean of Undergraduate Education. He was also former committee chair and current chief reader for the national Advanced Placement English Language test. A member of the American Fork Hillcrest 4th Ward and dedicated scouter, Gary served in numerous callings. He also served as Bishop of the BYU 14th Ward. Gary enjoyed piano, camping, all types of literature, food, and travel. His is a rare soul. He was a husband, father, scholar, and Scouter. Through his teaching, church service, and scouting he influenced thousands of people. He was a devoted husband. He was both a father and friend to his children. His family and friends will sorely miss his kindness and quirky sense of humor. A viewing will be held on May 6, 2010 at the LDS Chapel on 350 W. 700 N., American Fork from 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral will be held Friday, May 7, 2010 at 11 a.m. with viewing prior from 9 to10:30 a.m. Interment at American Fork Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made for the children to the Fund for Gary Hatch Family at Bank of American Fork. Online condolences may be sent at andersonmortuary.com

Gary was one of my comrades in Honors at BYU. He was such a joy to work with -- and even more to know. I do grieve with you on his passing.

I am shocked! I was looking forward to seeing Gary at the Reading...he was an incredible scholar and brilliant educator. I will always remember the last time that we spoke...so caring, so thoughtful, so understanding....and most of all ....he was a good man....

I offer my heartfelt condolences to Gary's family and friends. I worked with him on the Advanced Placement Advisory Board. Lots of people are supportive in their efforts...only a few are bedrock. Gary was one of the few.

Brother Hatch is a great, great man. I admired, respected, and gained much from him as my bishop and later as my professor. He was strong, friendly, laid-back, kind, sensitive, knowledgeable, wise, and humble. I would've liked to learn more from him. I look forward to doing so at a later time.

Dr. Hatch had a tremendously positive influence on both my undergrad and graduate career at BYU. He was the ONLY professor to ever give me a 100% on a paper, a fact which I still appreciate to this day. When I asked him to write a letter of recommendation for grad school, he suggested that I look into becoming a graduate student instructor. This seemed like a good idea, so later I asked him to write another letter of rec for this, too. He just laughed and said that since he was in charge of hiring all student instructors (for English 115, etc), he would just send a letter to himself. Thanks to his suggestion, I was able to enjoy teaching for three years and managed to earn a master's degree without needing to take out student loans. I appreciated so much his willingness to help out like this. He truly cared about his students and worked to help them in so many ways.

I hope the Lord will comfort you in this time of sorrow. Please know how much people like me appreciated Gary. He had such a tremendous impact on my life. We will all miss him.

I took my freshman writing course from Professor Hatch. He influenced my life by suggesting certain things to focus on in my studies. He encouraged me along a path that has led to some of the best experiences of my life. He remembered me and continued to be an encouraging influence whenever we crossed paths in the English Department. I am a Hatch too, and a distant relative. I'll always appreciate his kindness, sincere teaching, and example of good scholarship.

Dr. Hatch was one of my favorite professors. I took classes from him four times, the most of any professor I had. I felt a sort of kindred spirit in his diverse interests and appreciation for dialogue and discussion. He once told me that he found a job where his interests in rhetoric, politics, law, and literature all intersected. He was always willing to talk to students and made himself available for conversation. He stimulated and invited student comment and participation. He was diplomatic and challenging. I'll miss his company.

Thoughts and the memory of Gary has been very close to the surface these past few days since I heard of his sudden death. Though our earthly loss is real, how grateful I am for the knowledge of the Plan of Salvation and to think of Gary continuing in another sphere. My prayers for peace and comfort go out to you AnneMarie and your family, particularly David whom I also know personally.

It was my privilege to TA for Dr. Hatch's Honors 240 American Government and Society these past two years. He didn't just provide me with an on-campus job after my mission. He was an invaluable mentor and a patient, understanding boss. His love of teaching and learning allowed him to influence and bless the lives of students, helping them become better-informed world citizens. It would be difficult to find a more passionate educator or wonderful mentor than Dr. Gary Hatch. His legacy lives on in our memories and his soul has returned to Heavenly Father. His resolute testimony of Jesus Christ was always a strength to me. He lived a disciple's life as a servant-leader.

May 7, 2010

Dr. Hatch was a good man. He was a church leader while I was a member of his 14th ward 6 years ago. I would see him around campus and he would still say hi.

my thoughts are with the family.

May 7, 2010

Brother Hatch served as a counselor in the 14th ward bishopric when I was a freshman at BYU seven years ago. I vividly remember his upbeat attitude and wonderful sense of humor. His service in that leadership position has continued to have a great impact on me through out my BYU education. My thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very difficult time.

"I had the privilege of learning from Professor Hatch as he started his career at BYU. He was a great teacher, adviser, and example for me as I began graduate school and tried to find that elusive balance in life. Years later, I saw him early one morning playing the organ at the Temple and I thought again, "What a great example." He will be missed. My deepest condolences to his family.

Gary Hatch was my first bishop in a BYU ward. He did a lot to help me get comfortable with the school, the ward, and student life. Even 2 and 3 years later he would still say "hi" to me when we passed in the halls somewhere. I will miss him greatly.

Thank you, Dr. Hatch!

Dr. Gary L. Hatch kindly consented to present two one-day workshops in North Carolina, which he said he had never visited, during late February and mid-March 2010 for the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI). His love of literature, teaching, and people, his dry but also witty humor, his intellectual and physical stamina, and his calm while riding with a directionally challenged colleague in a strange city endeared him to me. I appreciated his collegiality and calmness during his leadership of the AP English Language and Composition Examination. He will be missed. I extend my prayers to his family and friends.

It was always a joy to come into a class with Professor Hatch. He welcomed every student, cared for each of us, and always wanted to share his knowledge and love of learning. I will only be one of many students who will miss him. He was always enthused at the small joys of life (including acquiring the gmail screen name profhatch). In so many little ways he showed me his love for writing and English and his love for sharing with his students. We loved him so much because he loved us. He was truly a great teacher.

Freshman year, I took debate from Dr Hatch. Time in his class and the debate team are some of my favorite memories of my first year. After 4 months on the debate team, in his class I actually learned what I was supposed to do. He was a great teacher. He will be sorely missed.

Gary Hatch is one of the kindest, brightest, and otherwise most competent people at BYU. His smile was always a radiant glow. We are terribly saddened to learn of his sudden passing, especially as we are traveling in the East and won't be able to return for the services. We hope and pray that his family will know how very highly their dad and husband is regarded at BYU and how much we will miss him also.

Gary was an amazing professor. I took every class I could from him - in both undergraduate and master's studies. He was so kind, so caring - really a rare person. His insights into English literature, rhetoric, and writing were refreshing clear.

Gary and I both began our careers at BYU around the same time, and I have considered him a friend and close colleague ever since. Almost all my memories of writing seminars and Honors Program events are filled with images of Gary, and I will miss him very much. In addition to the incalculable effect he has had on individual students and faculty, BYU is today a measurably better institution because of Gary's tireless service and countless contributions and sacrifices. He will be sorely missed by teachers and students alike.

Professor Hatch was an instructor for one of my classes this past fall. I appreciated his kind approach to discussing and settling important issues. He truly cared about us, his students. It is BYU faculty such as Professor Hatch that have made my undergraduate education memorable and productive. My heart goes out to his family.

I took Dr. Hatch's Honors Debate class as a freshman at BYU and enjoyed it very much. He possessed a kind, soft manner that made him easy to talk to and helped me to relax in his class, one which was not easy for me. My condolences to his family.

May 6, 2010

It was my great pleasure and deep honor to work alongside Gary Hatch for three years as a fellow associate dean of undergraduate education at BYU. Gary was always articulate, even-tempered, compassionate, thoughtful, and wise in his counsel. His dry sense of humor delighted us all; his solutions to problems resolved issues quickly. He will be sorely missed.

May 6, 2010

I never knew Dr. Hatch personally, but I know something of the Honors Program at BYU, and I know that anybody named as director of that program must be very special. The news of his passing saddens me, and though I had no emotional ties to him, my heart is softened as the realization dawns on me that Gary was called home - and that God trusts him and his family in this calling. As a participant in the Honors Program, I'm sure I have and will benefit from Gary's leadership and goodness. The only proof of Gary Hatch's good heart that anybody needs is his smile.

Dear Family Hatch:

You are in my thoughts while so many (me, included) are trying to come to terms with Gary's unexpected death. I was privileged to chat with Gary during several BYU meetings: he was always infinitely kind to all, supportive of everyone's efforts, willing and ready to help, modest and humble, witty, and quietly wise and grounded. He was a true mentor to very many of us.

I will sorely miss his gentle leadership on our campus.

I hope your hearts may be consoled somewhat in knowing how well respected Gary was, and that his legacy will remain long lasting in many of us at BYU.

Sincerely,

Michael Collins

I am very shocked to learn about the passing of a man so much in the prime of life as Professor Hatch, and I'm very sorry for his family. I wish them both the best. I was a student of Dr. Hatch's for one semester, and can see that I only witnessed the tip of the iceberg of all the wonderful things he did in this life.

May 6, 2010

I had the privilege of taking one of Professor Hatch's classes this past winter semester. He did an excellent job of balancing great respect for students' differing opinions with meaningful instruction. I learned a great deal in his class, but the thing that stands above all else in my memory is the care and patience he demonstrated for every one of his students. Always enthusiastic and funny, he approached every day with a wonderful optimism and refreshing humility. I will remember his family and loved ones in my prayers.

Through the sadness, I find it impossible not to smile when thinking of Gary. His image comes to mind with his ever-present wry smile--that little upturned mouth corner that said that we're all in on the same joke, we're safe and loved together somehow--and it's impossible, still, not to smile back at the image. I'm grateful to have known this smile and the love it shared with so many--and I'm so very, very sorry for AnneMarie and their children, who will miss that grin each day. Peace, somehow, through it all.

I am shocked and saddened by this news. I went to Bingham with Gary many moons ago. He was an amazing leader then and I'm sure he was an amazing husband, father and teacher! My heart goes out to his family and students, I know they will miss him greatly. I enjoyed renewing our friendship by reading his entries on Facebook and loved his wonderful enthusiasm for life and learning. He was an amazing man. BYU lost one of their best. My prayers are with you.

Professor Dr. Gary Hatch only graced my life for a mere 4 months this winter in my last course at BYU, but the impact that he had on my life has already reached further than any other instructor that I’ve ever had. Out of all the wonderful professors and teachers I have had over the years, no one even compared to the quality of his instruction and example. He was a wonderful, genuine, intelligent, spiritual, brilliant, and truly outstanding man. His family should be proud of the undoubtedly infinite impact that he has had on countless others that had the pleasure of meeting his acquaintance.

Dear Hatch family,
My thoughts and prayers are with you at this very difficult time. I had the honour of serving with Elder Hatch in Denmark. He was the AP when I arrived in Copenhagen and knew of his obedience and quiet strength. My heart goes out to your son serving in Berlin, as we also have a son currently serving in the mission field. I know that the Lord will watch over him. May the Lord bless your eternal family. Med Kaerlighed, Ann (Magnusson) Turner, Calgary, Canada
