Ina Norton Obituary
1917 ~ 2013
St. George, Utah-Ina Smith Norton, 96, passed away August 22, 2013 in Napa, California. She was born January 6, 1917 in Milford, Utah to Joseph Charles Smith and Emma Elizabeth Dougherty Smith. She grew up in Milford, and it was there she met her future husband, Harold (Hal) W. Norton. When his work took him to Washington D.C., and she was attending Brigham Young University, their courtship continued by mail. When he proposed by letter, she eventually accepted. They were married in Washington on May 16, 1938. The following year they traveled back to Utah where they were sealed in the Logan LDS Temple.
They continued to live in the Washington D.C. area, where her husband worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture until 1942, when they moved to Grass Range, Montana, for short time. When Hal hired out on the Union Pacific Railroad, they returned to Milford where they raised their three daughters.
Ina prepared to help send her children to college by returning to school herself, graduating from the then College of Southern Utah with a BA in education. She loved teaching and loved the more than 600 students she taught at Milford Elementary School. She taught for 20 years, retiring in 1979. In 1995, after a few years of dividing their time between Milford and St. George, Hal and Ina moved permanently to St. George.
She was a life-long member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and loved the gospel, serving in many capacities, including Relief Society president and gospel doctrine teacher. Her family relied on her strength, faith and prayers. Following their retirement, she and Hal served a 12 month mission in Oakland, California beginning in 1981.
Ina loved her husband, daughters and grandchildren and was abundantly generous with all she had. Her home was a refuge to her family, while at the same time, she was the wind in all their sails. She had a lively sense of humor and fun, and was the first to stir things up at a family gathering. She was creative and full of energy, at times an indomitable force, and could accomplish an amazing amount in a day. She leaves behind a family who loves and misses her, but who rejoices that she can rejoin her much-loved husband, who died in 2012.
She is survived by her three daughters: Renee Norton of St. George, Utah, Jean (Doug) Wright of Napa, California, and Barbara (J.L.) McCarrey of Anchorage, Alaska; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 7, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at the Milford LDS Chapel, 748 West 600 South, Milford Utah. Interment will be held at the Milford City Cemetery.
