KayeHugie Thorne2/19/39 ~ 4/30/04  Kaye Hugie Thorne, mother, teacher, and botanist, died peacefully April 30, 2004 after a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease.  Kaye graduated from USU, and after marrying James Thorne, she taught elementary school in Walnut Creek, California. In 1966, the family moved to Provo where her husband taught Chemistry at BYU. She was active in the LDS church, and was especially fond of telling children gospel stories along with large illustrations she had made. She was active in the leadership of the Ward Primary.  When both children were in school, Kaye obtained a Master's degree in botany and was hired as the Assistant Curator of Plants at the BYU Herbarium. On numerous field trips she collected and preserved numerous plants for use in teaching and research at BYU and other institutions. Kaye was especially talented in drawing plants in pen and ink, and her scientific illustrations have appeared in a number of books and botanical journals. Her excitement about wild plants was infectious, and she lead numerous nature walks for non-scientists. She also ran the Colorado River to train boating guides in the plants of the area. Her wholesome influence has been sorely missed by her family and friends during her 10-year illness. They will cherish her memory along with the art and scientific work she left behind. She is survived by her husband, James M. Thorne, her two children, James Perry Thorne and Allison (Preston) Stewart, and by four grandchildren., her mother; Edith L. Hugie, and siblings; John R. Hugie, Robert Hugie, Jan Hugie Smith, Jackie Chambers, Kelley Thorpe.
