Lamar Guymon Obituary

In Loving Memory
Our amazing husband, father, papa, brother and friend, Lamar Edward "Sheriff" Guymon, 71, of Huntington, Utah, was taken from us way too soon on October 12, 2018, after struggling with complications from a heart attack ten months prior. We have fought to understand why he had to struggle through the last ten months but the man who never "needed" anyone needed us all. We will all cherish this last ten months for a lifetime. He was born December 30, 1946, to Starr Hal and Ina Madge Johnson Guymon and grew up on a farm in Huntington.
Lamar married his sweetheart and love of his life GayLa Jensen, on March 13, 1966, in Ferron, Utah. Later solemnized in the Manti Temple and sealed to their family for time and all eternity on May 6, 1978. He was an adoring husband to GayLa for 52 years. An awesome dad to his six children, and papa to 15 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
"Sheriff" Guymon served a 40 year career in law enforcement with 36 years as the elected Emery County Sheriff. He made such an impact on so many lives and loved helping people through their life's problems. If you knew Sheriff Guymon you have a story of him helping or caring for you in some way. He was involved in so many events during the years as Sheriff there is just no way to put them all in to words. Among the greatest were the Wilberg Mine Disaster and the Crandall Canyon Mine Disaster. The leadership and compassion he showed to the families and miners involved in these tragedies were life changing for him and those affected. He dedicated his life to serving others. He genuinely cared for EVERY person. Upon his passing, he was the Mayor of Huntington.
Lamar enjoyed collecting hot wheels cars, mountain bikes, shoes, hats, and clothes, starting and not finishing home projects, mountain biking, photography (taking pictures of sunsets, sunrises and old leaf-baren trees were some of his favorites.) His favorite place to be was on the desert enjoying the San Rafael Swell. One of his proudest accomplishments was hand building The Good Water Rim Trail surrounding the rim of the Wedge. He was a founding member of the MECCA Bike Club and thoroughly enjoyed his time with his biking family. We are comforted knowing that he is able to bike again, free of any ailments.
Lamar served on many boards and committees: Castleview Hospital Chairman of the Board; President of Utah Association of Counties; President of the Sheriff's Association; Trails Committee; Travel Bureau; Utah Mining Association; if there was a board or an association he was probably on it. He attended the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia. Lamar and GayLa served as ordinance workers for 7 years in the Manti Temple which was GayLa's favorite thing they ever participated in as a couple. He served in many callings but his favorite was his latest calling serving as the Public Affairs Director developing interfaith relationships with leaders of other denominations.
He leaves behind his sweetheart: GayLa; six children; DaShai Nelson, Ferron, Utah; Stephanie Adams, St. George, Utah; Melany (James) Weaver, Huntington, Utah; Jeremy (McKenzi) Guymon, Ferron, Utah; Tim (Teresa) Guymon, Huntington, Utah; Karlee (Kip) Leonard, Price, Utah . Preceded in death by son-in-law Jess Nelson, brother Larry and parents.
The family would like to thank all of the nurses and staff at Castleview Hospital and Parkdale Care Center for the care and compassion you gave to our beloved father. Thank you to his doctors, Dr. Wang, Dr. Cragun, Dr. Potter, Dr. Halliday, Dr. Etzel, Dr. Pressett and our favorite house call doctor, Dalen Johnson.
Lamar left big lasting impressions on so many people. He has left a void in our lives that can never be filled and to his sweetheart, "we decided on forever.

Not long ago I had a phone conversation with you Lamar. I was trying to figure out where some secret mountain biking was that few if any besides you knew about. Your enthusiasm for biking in your 70s matched what a 20 year olds would be. I loved your passion, kindness, and service mentality. You were so excited to tell me about it. I also remember how excited you were when years ago I finally Gave up after much persuasion that 2 wheeler trail building machine the Rocon and we had a great laugh when we found some paperwork that It came with that it had been sold at a police auction 30 years earlier and the officer signing the paperwork was you. Wish we had 1 more bike ride and you could finish telling me more about some of those secret trails and life's treasures you've discovered. Farewell friend! I imagine you're already busy serving and preparing a trail for the rest of us.

Dear GayLa,

Our hearts are sad at this time. We will miss LaMar and his beautiful smile. He was such a great man and a great tease. We cherish our time spent with the two of you in the Manti Temple.

We added a picture of you and LaMar from our Christmas Social in 2014. I thought you would like to have it. You two look so good together. You are an eternal team.

Our love and our prayers are with you and your family. You are so very precious to us. You are wonderful and we love you.

My family only lived in Huntington for about 6 months clear back in 1968. I was a little 7 year old girl who knew I had a friend in Mr. Guymon. He was a neighbor who made my dad laugh and who dad said we should go to if we were ever in trouble. Prayers to your family at this time.

Lamar and I were the same age, but ran around in a different crowd! After having a couple of distressing incidents with the lack of a caring and ambitious Sheriff's Department, we were desperate enough to vote for this wild child named Lamar Guymon! After having him in for several months, and being quite impressed, I asked him why he thought, after being one of the wilder guys in school, his answer was TO the point! Think about it, I know where they are going to hide, and probably what they are going to do next! Lamar was not only considered tough, he was also there to give people in trouble a hand up! Also his sense of humor helped make someone in a tough time, relax, and know they could put their lives back together! What a great loss to the entire area! His love of life, his Sheriff's Department, friends, his Savior, BUT most of ALL his beautiful wife and family!Buddy, you're going to be missed by SO many!!
