LIZZIE LANDRO Obituary

Lizzie Saetrum Landro 1914 ~ 2009 "Together Again" Our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother finished her mortal existence Sept. 13, 2009, just four days prior to her 95th birthday, to reunite with her husband, Alexander. She was born September 17, 1914 to Johan Marius Saetrum and Aagot Helene Berthelsen in Bergen, Norway. She married Alexander Guttorm Landro December 14, 1940. In February 1948, after the end of World War II, she left her beloved Norway to immigrate to the U.S. in February 1948 with three young children, Guttorm, Kari, and Tor, in tow. When settled in her home in South Salt Lake, she bore two additional children, Alex and Lisbeth. Her marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple November 24, 1948. Known to her children as simply "Mama," she was both a good citizen and a devoted LDS Church member. To adjust to her new country, she volunteered to teach Primary so that she could learn to speak English, enabling her to become a naturalized citizen at the first opportunity. Mama had a special zeal for genealogy and was a regular at the Church History Museum for many years. With her husband, she went on three missions, two proselytizing missions to Norway and a temple mission in Sweden. At home, Mama was known for her love of and skill in gardening, garnering civic awards in South Salt Lake for the beauty of her yard. Not only did her home exterior look beautiful, the interior did as well. She put her Singer manual sewing machine to good use, sewing draperies and re-upholstering all her furniture. She had truly an artist's touch when it came to interior decoration. She had a high level of energy and was absolutely tireless in any activity she undertook. Her grandchildren loved visiting her along with her husband, especially at Christmas. Grandchildren and great-grandchildren learned Norwegian customs of trying to find almonds in risgrot and singing carols while joining hands, circling the Christmas tree. Carols were sung in both Norwegian and English simultaneously! They thrilled to see Papa and Mama dressed just like Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus. Preceded in death by her husband, her two sisters, Helen Johannessen and Gunvor Berentzen, and her brother, Bjorn Saetrum. She is survived by her five children, 12 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren. The family wishes to thank Cherie Uzzel and the wonderful staff at the Alta Ridge Assisted Care Center in Holiday for the care they provided Mama the last year and a half of her life. A viewing will be held at Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple, Saturday September 19 from 10:00 a.m. 10:45 a.m. A graveside service will be held the same day at 11 a.m. at the Salt Lake City Cemetery. The location address is 1150 East Elm Ave. (380 North).

Anne Brit and I have fond memories of Lizzie and Alexander while growing up in Salt Lake City. The Steen Family and Dahl family had fun times with the Landro and Saetrum. Especially at the Norwegian Parties. I worked for Bjorn for a few years. Tante Gunvor was a special lady too.

I got an email from the Norway Mission Website today and there was a link to Sister Landro's obituary. I knew her in Norway. She and Bro. Landro served in Bergen Norway when I was there in 1979. I was able to work with both of them often, and I loved all of those opportunities. They blessed my life as a missionary tremendously. We always laughed at them mixing up Norwegian and English as they would speak to us. They were the absolute best missionary couple. There wasn't anything that they wouldn't do to help the full time missionaries. I was able to spend some one on one time with them just prior to going home. They will never know how much their tender loving care helped me that day.
I am sad to hear about Sister Landro's passing. She was a very happy and loving person. She was always smiling and laughing. She was a devoted missionary and member of the church. I know that she is having a wonderful reunion with Bro. Landro and many family members and friends. I pray that her family will be comforted during this time of their lives. That they will know that "Families are Forever." My parents have also passed on and it gives me great comfort knowing that Families are Forever. I hope that the memories of Bro. and Sister Lando give their family comfort and peace in the days ahead. God bless you all. Sister Karen (Bishop) Draudt

A great lady has passed. I remember Lizzie and Alexander so well from their mission here in Bergen, and from many wonderful visits on Truman Avenue during the years I lived in Provo and Salt Lake. I am sure she and Alexander are delighted at their reunion.
My condolences to all of the family.

I'm so sorry to hear of Sister Landro's death. I was fortunate to serve a mission in Norway at the same time as Brother and Sister Landro. I have fond memories of them both. Brother Landro was famous for his sense of humor and his "blanding" of languages. Sister Landro was known for her kindness to all.

Dee and I would like to express our sincere sympathy, love and support during this time. It is apparent to us as grandparents that this wonderful woman raised good children, who in turn raised a wonderful son. We could not be more grateful for the love and support that he gives our daughter and the manner in which they both are raising their children. Our grandchildren are her testimony of a loving family.

It is not in passing that we mourn your loss, but rejoice in the knowledge that she is once again reunited with her beloved husband and that they prepare the way to once again be with all of you. How truly special a time it is for her and for you to cherish memories.

Our love and support to you at this time,

Bob and Dee Wake

You don't know me, but I worked with Lizzie many years ago at Deseret Book. Everytime I use the brown bowl she gave me for a wedding gift, I think of her. She is a fond memory for me.

I've heard Lis talk about how Grandma sewed a lot (if not all) of her clothing, but I never knew Grandma-Great re-upholstered furniture, nor did I know she sewed all her own draperies and such. Her gardens were always beautiful, though, and I have fun memories of Becky "helping" Grandma-Great use the hose to water her plants - and sometimes watering her! Grandma would just laugh. She truly had a kindly heart towards her great/grandchildren.
What a beautiful obituary, and what a life well-lived and well served. She finally is free from mortal cares and sorrows, and how happy she must be at this time to finally be with her beloved eternal companion, and to also know how much her family loves and misses her.

Lis, Kevin and family--
I am sorry to hear of the loss of your mother. I know you will miss her greatly. Whenever I think of your mom and dad, I think about the time they brought all the food to one of your baby's blessing. What was so special was they brought it from Salt Lake to Lakewood, California, in suitcases! What special people they are!!

Alex and Lisbeth: I don't know if you remember me, but I lived on Haven Ave. just around the corner from you. We went to school together. I just wanted to express my sincere condolences to you and your family on the loss of your mother.
