Milton Backman Obituary

1927 ~ 2016
Milton Vaughn Backman, Jr., died peacefully in his daughter's home in Herriman, Utah, on February 6, 2016. He was eighty-eight years old. Milt, or "Mickey" to many of his friends, was professor emeritus of Church History and Doctrine at Brigham Young University. He was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on June 11, 1927, and grew up there and in Los Angeles and graduated from Salt Lake's East High School in 1945. He served during World War II as a Merchant Marine and during the Korean War in the U.S. Air Force. He served an LDS mission in South Africa. On his birthday in 1953 he married Kathleen McLatchy, also of Salt Lake City.
He received his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in History from the University of Utah, and a Ph.D, also in History, from the University of Pennsylvania in 1959. After teaching U.S. History for two years at West Texas State University he moved to Provo where he taught at Brigham Young University from 1960 to 1991. He primarily taught courses in U.S. History, Christian Religions, and LDS Church History.
Dr. Backman was the author of six books: American Religions and the Rise of Mormonism (1970); Joseph Smith's First Vision (1971); Eyewitness Accounts of the Restoration (1986); Christian Churches of America (1983); The Heavens Resound: A History of the Latter-day Saints in Ohio, 1830-1838 (1983); and People and Power of Nauvoo (2002). His writings also appear in other publications, including many articles and pamphlets and the Joseph Smith Papers.
After retiring from BYU he served several short-term LDS Missions in Nauvoo, Illinois, and in 1994 helped to organize the BYU Semester Program there where he served as director for three semesters. He later served two additional LDS Missions with his second wife, Sharon Richey, in Nauvoo and Kirtland, Ohio.
Milt travelled throughout the world. He led numerous tours with BYU Travel Study and participated in many BYU Education Weeks. He was an avid fan of BYU sports. He even attended a BYU basketball game the week before his death.
Milt is predeceased by his parents, three wives, a daughter, Karen, a stepson, Joseph Richey, and a sister, Bette Esch. He is survived by a daughter, Kris Denison and her husband Neil of Herriman, Utah; a son, Mike and his husband Steve Swayne of Quechee, Vermont; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; eleven step-children, fifty-four step-grandchildren and twenty-eight step-great-grandchildren.

Milt was a dear friend to my husband and I beginning in Nauvoo in 2000 and then as neighbors through the rest of our lives. He has had a profound influence for good with his great knowledge and love for the Lord, the Gospel and Joseph Smith. He always showed great love for others and was courageous beyond words. His influence will last forever. May his spirit be with you and bring you comfort at this time of his passing. Sincerely with love, Karen Moon

Dr. Backman was my Church History professor, and while I was a young, inexperienced, unresponsive student, I can honestly say he changed my life. I still have the notes I took in his class and that experience sent me on a journey that has helped me love and appreciate Church History ever since. I have taught countless students of my own what I learned from him all those years ago. I will always be grateful for his contributions and for his willingness to share what he learned with young people, even if we weren't always the most enthusiastic bunch of learners.

Brother Backman was a groundbreaking historian who helped make Mormon History a legitimate field of study. I only heard him teach once, but he was also a gentleman, and very kind in his manner and mode of sharing his knowledge.

Sadly I watch the lights of my youth grow dim and pass. It was delightful to have been at grandfather's home when his siblings would all descend for a visit- or come up, as Ralph lived on 12th Avenue. As that generation passed I got to know their children, my mother's cousins. And now that generation also passes, near or far. To Micky's children: please know our deep admiration and appreciation for your father, indeed you parents and our continued condolences for your losses.

Backman Family,

Our sincere condolences upon the passing of the family patriarch. He has been a wonderful contributor to the education, academic and spiritual, of many people over the years. His retirement from BYU left a hole in the network. Thank you to the family for the support of this great soul. He shall be missed.

Sincerely,
Drs. Terry and Jan Clemmer

I had the good fortune to attending a BYU travel study semester to Nauvoo with Bro. Backman. It was an amazing experience to learn at his hands in such a historically significant city such as Nauvoo and other church history sites. I was so impressed with his ready store of memorized facts, names and dates from earlier times and his ability to pull it all together into a interesting lesson. I'm grateful for he and the other teachers that left family behind and attended us, (sometimes unappreciative college students) on such great experiences as my travel semester was.

My condolences to his family on his passing.

Brother Backman's Church History class at BYU began a life long love in me of Church History. I thought of him and his class often last year as I taught the Doctrine & Covenants in early morning seminary. A great man!

You were my favorite professor at BYU in 1963. I learned to love Church History so much more because of your teachings and testimony. Thank you so much for sharing your vast knowledge in such an engaging way.

Pres Backman

Sure enjoyed having you for a Branch President at the BYU student ward. You had a lot of fun activities for the BYU students. Your daughter Kris has been a good friend to me all these years. Thank you for your good example and for being a strong leader.

Kris and Mike my prayers go out to you and your families .... Karen will be so happy to see her dad.

Love you all,
