Momoko Ushio Obituary

"Muzzy"
Momoko Tateoka Ushio, age 92, passed away on Tuesday, June 18, 2013 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Momo was born April 1, 1921 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Tokizo and Natsu Tateoka. Momo grew up in Ogden, Utah and moved to Salt Lake City, Utah to attend the Charette School of Costume Design, graduating on March 30, 1942. She married Shigeki Ushio on March 6, 1943. They were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple. Together they lived in a home built by Shigeki and raised four children in the Cottonwood area. Momo was active in the PTA and served in many leadership positions in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served with her husband Shigeki Ushio, who presided over the Osaka, Japan Mission from 1980-1983. Together they served in the presidency of the LDS Church Hosting from 1993-1996. Her home on the Ushio hill was the gathering place each holiday for not only family and friends, but for many who found themselves far from home. She will be remembered for hosting hundreds of guests at her dinner table, notably laden with Japanese cuisine. In 1962, together with Jim and Toni Ushio, Momo started and operated Catering by Ushio. She worked as a caterer for about 20 years. Momo loved nature and took pleasure in creating both a flower and vegetable garden each year, sharing her harvest generously with many. Momo loved her four children: Linda (Ronald) Inouye, Scarsdale, New York; David (Judi) Ushio, Honolulu, Hawaii; Shauna Frandsen and Ginny (Douglas) Smith; Salt Lake City, Utah; and her older brother Tom (Fumi) Tateoka, Riverton, Utah. Her 15 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren brought sweetness and joy to her life.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son-in-law, Ronald Frandsen; and brothers; Sam, Jim and Matt Tateoka.
Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, June 22 at 12:00 noon at the Cottonwood Creek Ward, 1250 Murray-Holladay Road, Salt Lake City, Utah. Friends and family may call on Friday, June 21 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and Saturday, June 22 from 11:00 - 11:45 a.m. at the Cottonwood Creek Ward prior to the Memorial Service. Interment, Mountain View Memorial Estates, 3115 East 7800 South, Salt Lake City, Utah.

My brother Alma just notified us of Momo's passing. Ginny and I grew up together and Momo was kind of like a second Mom. Oh, how I felt at home when I was there on Ushio Hill. Truly, great legacies live on as will Momo's. Wish we could have been there. We are finishing up our last two months in the Texas Fort Worth Mission.

I just read about Sister Ushios passing with great sadness. She was my mission “mom” and we always know of her love and concern for us as missionaries. I have thought about her and my mission experiences often and am grateful that she was there for us all during this wonderful time in our lives. My thoughts and prayers are with her family. I am sure she will be missed greatly.

I was so sad to learn of Momo's passing. I have so many wonderful memories of our friendship over the years. She was such a good walking buddy as we tried to keep old age at bay. May you find comfort in the fact that she is together with Shigeki again. Anneliese Burleigh

I would like to express my condolences to the family of Momo Ushio. I was one of her missionaries in the Japan Osaka Mission (1981-1983). I really enjoyed them as the leaders of that mission. The funeral was a very touching tribute to a wonderful lady.

Ushio Family,
I wish to express my heartfelt sympathy to your family at this time. Your parents raised a wonderful family. It was evident there was much love and respect within the Ushio home by the actions of their children. There was a great deal of admiration for the Ushio siblings at Granite High School.(A special hello to my high school friend Dave)It is sad to have lost an extraordinary woman. I am certain she felt blessed to be your mother. May the blessing of having her as your mother and the cherished memories sustain you as you grieve.

I don't know why I loved one rose more than another,
But when we found each other here,
We vowed to find each other there again as well.

Among the noble and the great ones here and there.
