Monte Brough Obituary

1939 ~ 2011
KAYSVILLE, UT-Monte J. Brough, beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 20, 2011. Monte was born June 11, 1939 in Randolph, Utah to Richard Muir and Gwendolyn Kearl Brough. Monte married his eternal companion, Lanette Barker, on August 30, 1962 in the Idaho Falls Temple. Monte's life was one of willing, faithful, and dedicated service. His genuine kindness and his entertaining sense of humor endeared him to all who knew him. His family was his pride and joy, and he found great happiness spending time with and supporting them. He loved hunting with his sons and traveling with his daughters.
Monte served as a missionary in the British Isles from 1959 to 1961. Upon his return, he earned a degree in mathematics and later a Masters Degree and Ph.D. in Business Administration from the University of Utah. He worked with computers and in management and eventually founded his own computer services company. He was the founding president of the United Way of Davis County.
Monte served in many Church leadership positions. From 1978 to 1981, he presided over the Minnesota Minneapolis Mission and had great love and gratitude for each of his missionaries. Monte was called to serve as a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy in 1988. He served in the Presidency of that quorum from 1993-1998. He was the executive director of the Family History Department. During part of his time as general authority, he served as president of the Asia Area and North America Southeast Area. He was named General Authority Emeritus October 2007. He willingly dedicated his life to sharing the gospel and testifying of the Savior, Jesus Christ.
Monte is survived by his wife of 49 years, Lanette; seven children: Joseph (Emily) Brough, Dalene (Sid) Magill, Lanelle (Troy) Butterfield, Chris (Jessica) Brough, Mona (Chris) Andrus, Brian (Tora) Brough, Kami (Ty) Kilgore, 23 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, siblings: Kae Weston, Dick (Lola) Brough, Max (Rosanna) Brough, and Val (Virginia) Hanney. He is preceded in death by his parents, step-father, Lawrence Hanney, and brother-in-law, Ivan Weston.
Funeral services will be held Monday, September 26, 2011 at 11 a.m. at the Kaysville Utah West Stake Center, 270 W. Burton Lane, Kaysville, Utah. Friends may visit family on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist's Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road and Monday from 9 to 10:15 a.m. at the church. Interment, Kaysville City Cemetery.

We send our love and condolences. I never met Elder Brough, but I understand he was a good friend of my father. I will forever appreciate an important lesson he taught my two oldest sons during a talk he gave several years ago in the Priesthood Session of General Conference. In it he mentioned an act of service rendered by my father, whom my boys have never met. Elder Brough couldn't have known they were listening that day, but his talk left an impression on all of us.

Whenever I think of the name Monte Brough, I think of a man of great intelligence, integrity, and spirituality. He was a wonderful Young Men’s advisor and Bishop while I was a youth. Every lesson he taught had us young men hanging on his every word. My father served as his executive secretary and he still talks about that experience today expounding on the great wisdom of Bishop Brough.

I remember the hand written letter’s I would get from Bishop Brough while serving my mission. One such letter had great counsel in teaching me the importance of scripture memorization. He told me of a goal that he had set when serving his mission to memorize a scripture a day. In doing this, he found that he had managed to memorize over 700 scriptures. In his letter he said, “… memorization does for the mind, what exercise does for the body.” Although I never memorized 700 scriptures myself, I found that taking this counsel to heart made me a better scholar of the scriptures and certainly made me a better missionary.

This man epitomizes the words from the song “Each Life That Touches Ours For Good”. His life truly is a testament the Lord’s own great mercy as he has profoundly touched my life for good.

Dear Lanette and Family; Thank you for sharing your lives with ours in West Kaysville. The funeral today was a wonderful example of what can be accomplished in a family that is centered in the gospel of Jesus Christ. I would have liked to put my arm around all of you and tell you how much I loved and respected Monte. He was an inspiration to me as a young Elder's Quorum President when he was my Bishop, and gave me the faith to try great things. He was my role model when I had the chance to serve as a Bishop. He offered beautiful counsel to our children in the temple sealing rooms, and always just considered himself a humble friend. God bless you all as you continue to build on his legacy of faith and obedience.

Sister Brough and family,
Marie and I remember with fondness the time we were able to be together while Elder Brough served in the Seventy. While a temple assignment and previous work commitment has made it difficult to convey our feelings in person, we nevertheless want you to know of our deep love and respect for Elder Brough and of our prayers for you and your family in the days ahead. We are comforted, as surely you must be, in the knowledge that he is busy again in service to the Lord.

I want to express my Love and appreciation to the Brough family. Pres Brough was a fair, honest, and well grounded man. As a mission President, he taught many things. Most of what I learned from him, was through his integrity, his example and his desire to do things the right way. He gave me his Business card as he concluded his mission and had me promise I would keep it in my wallet and contact him if I ever needed to. About a year ago or so... the card retired from my wallet and now is is safe keeping.. torn, worn, tattered and illegible, yes... but the strength of that card is stronger than steal. He taught me to truly serve is to love. I had a companion that had tested several elders and when I asked why I was with him, he told me to teach him what love was, how to love and to love him. When I asked why me, he said so you can learn what love is, how to love and to be loved. Then he challenged me to find 3 things a day that my companion did that was great, focus on them and compliment him for it. The first several weeks.. I had to search hard, and my companion did not believe me... I kept going. by the end of our time together, the transformation had taken place, not only for my companion, but for me. and today, some 30 years later, I realize had I not learned that lesson, I would not have been prepared to show up for my beloved wife in the way she needed. Thank you Pres Brough, for seeing and knowing the lesson I needed to learn, to prepare to become the husband I needed to be.

Dear Lanette and Family,

Our hearts were broken when we learned of Monte's passing. He was such a great man who led by example.

He loved his family a lot and it was fun listening to him talk about his association with Dappy and Byrd. I remember the fun times at Bear Lake for the family reunions.

May the Lord comfort you during this time of sorrow and know we will see each other again.

Love,

Sister Brough and Family:
Please know how much I love and admire President Brough, you, and your family! My condolences and prayers go out to your family. As a young missionary with little or no church background, you took me under your wings and taught me what it meant to be a missionary, as well as how to serve in the Church when I returned home. I am forever grateful that the Lord called me to serve under such an AMAZING Mission President and his family!!!

Lanette and Family - how tender my heart is for each and all of you. Monte was such a wonderful, kind man - how we will miss him. Many times of have listened to the recording of Kent's funeral and the words that he spoke in his behalf. Many, many times of have thought of the evening in your living room as he counseled with us after Kent left. I will always have a place in my heart for him and the way he nurtured our family as our Bishop, and most of all - as our friend and neighbor. Can you imagine the reunion that he and Kent are having - with Betty Bishop playing the piano - oh how Monte will be missed!!! Please know that you are in our prayers and that we love you so!!! Dear Brough family, We are saddened at your loss, We have the opportunity to know two of his sons Brian and Chris and their families. It is obvious that as good of people these two sons turned out there had to be plenty of love and kindness within the family. This reflects on the kind of person Bro Brough was and Sis Brough is. We are thankful to have a little touch of Bro and Sis Brough in our lives, with knowing their sons. Our condolence and love, The Adamson's (Brigham City)

Dear Lanette and Family, I pray Heavenly Father will comfort you at this time. I am forever indebted to Bishop and Elder Brough for his love and guidance. Even when Matt Hyde and I made Dalene cry at road show practice and Bishop Brough caught us in the foyer of the Kaysville Tabernacle afterwards. It is a fond memory now, but we were scared straight by his righteous indignation then. I'll never forget he and Elder Carmac showing us precious church archives and riding home to Kaysville with him and Chris discussing his upcoming general conference talk. Not to mention performing mine and my wife's sealing, including the tender caring he showed to my wife's non-LDS parents afterward. Forever grateful to all my friends of the Brough family.

We're so sorry to hear of Monte's passing and offer our condolences. When Monte and I were companions in England, we had many wonderful experiences. Brough Family,

Elder Brough was one of the finest examples I ever knew of a righteous priesthood holder and loving father and husband. Next to my own father there was none else I held in higher regard. His example steels my resolve to be better; I'm not sure what greater measure there is of a life.

Shortly after Monte returned from his British mission I acted inappropriately in Sunday school. The result was Monte and his best friend Dale (?) Rex team teaching the teenagers of Randolph. Brother Rex died shortly after and between them they taught me to trust the Lord's promptings. Having known him at that time was critical in my life. May I express my sympathies’ to the family and fellow classmates Val and Max and thank God again for Monte. A fellow class member and I counted the number of stake presidents and bishops that were similarly touched on that occasion and were surprised at the number.

I consider Monte one of my choicest friends. Our years together in related callingss have been highlights of my life. He and Lynette are Celelstial souls. Future days ahead when we can work together again are the focus of great expectations. Bless each of you as you prepare for those future days of reunion.

September 22, 2011

Dear Lanette and Family,

I can't begin to express my love and admiration for Monte. He was a mentor, teacher, and true friend to me. It was such an honor to have served with him in the the Seventy and Family History Department. My life was made much better and more useful by Monte's influence in it. Thank you for the years of faithful and devoted service you each have given.

I know some of the road you are now asked to walk. At times it will be very lonely, but the Lord does not leave us without comfort, peace, and assurance. This is particularly true when one such as Monte has been called elsewhere. May you feel an abundance of the Lord's Spirit in these moments of parting and farewell. Your faith in the Savior will bring answers to your questions and company in your lonliness.

With love and respect,

Elder and Sister Dennis B. Neuenschwander
