Renee Gassman Obituary

Renee Ruth
Jones Gassman
1930 ~ 2012
Renee Ruth Jones Gassman, loving parent, teacher, and longtime resident of Orem, passed away January 8, 2012.
She was born September 4, 1930, in Mt. Pleasant, Utah, to John William and Ruth Monsen Jones. Her childhood was spent in Mt. Pleasant, where she attended school, graduating from North Sanpete High School. She then enrolled at Snow College in Ephraim, where she was active in music and theater and where she met and dated Byron Gassman.
Upon graduation from Snow, she attended Brigham Young University, completing a bachelor's degree in home economics education. She began her teaching career at Gunnison Valley High School and Tooele High School.
After several years of courtship, Renee and Byron were married September 3, 1955, in the Manti Temple. Shortly thereafter, they left for Chicago, where Byron enrolled in a graduate program at the University of Chicago. There she helped support her husband by frequently substitute teaching throughout Chicago's public schools. Later, she taught adult education sewing classes. While they were in Chicago, their first two children were born.
After Byron graduated with his PhD, they and their young family moved back to Utah, where Byron accepted a teaching position at BYU. They eventually settled in Orem and welcomed five additional children into their family.
Renee was happiest raising her children. She also loved to sew and spent many satisfying hours creating intricate sewing projects. Professionally, she taught part-time in the Clothing and Textiles Department at BYU for a few years and finished her career teaching home economics at Orem Junior High School.
All her life she was a dedicated worker in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in many callings, including Relief Society president, stake Young Women secretary, and stake missionary. She was a strong believer in missionary work; she and Byron served an education mission to Ningbo, China, from 1997 to 1999. She also helped support four sons and two daughters on missions as well as five grandsons. In her later years, she and Byron served as ushers on Temple Square and as temple workers in the Mt. Timpanogos Temple.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years and her seven children: Ruth (Chris) Boswell, Bruce (Pamela), Kent (Melinda), Deon (Jeffrey) Leavy, Jay (Tammy), Paul (Amy), and Heidi (Chris) Yates. She is also survived by 30 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 14, at 10 a.m. at the Sunset Heights 4th Ward, 500 South, 600 West, Orem. Friends may call Friday, January 13, from 6-8 p.m. at Sundberg Olpin Mortuary, 495 South State, Orem, and Saturday at 9 a.m. prior to the funeral. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the LDS General Missionary Fund. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.SundbergOlpinMortuary.com.

The Gassman family changed my life. I met Ruth in 1975 and fell madly in love with her. Ruth was instrumental in my conversion to the church. She introduced me to Renee and the rest of the Gassman family in August, 1975. Renee was like a second mother to me until I graduated from BYU law school in 1980. I moved to Houston, Texas upon graduation. I have enjoyed a very successful career as an attorney, raised a wonderful family and been an active member of the church for over 35 years. I have fond memories of Renee and the rest of the
Gassman clan. I would not be where I am in life if our paths had not crossed. Renee will be missed. Thanks to all of the Gassmans for their support and friendship. I will never be able to repay them for all they gave me. May the Lord comfort all of you in your time of mourning. Your good friend, Bob Tarics, Houston, Texas

Bryon and family;
Renee was and is a Great Lady! She had a dignity about her that bespoke of her nobility. How blessed I am to have known you both as dear friends and neighbours.
She lived her beliefs - a life of love and service. I was the fortunate recipient of both.
May you find peace, comfort and again know joy until you are reunited again.
With much love and appreciation for you both.

Ruth,
I am sorry to read that your mom has passed away. You and your family are in my thoughts during a time that is difficult and emotional. The last time I saw your mom we had a nice visit in the cafeteria of the Timpanogos temple. She is a kind lady and I'm sure will be greatly missed by many family members and friends. Take care Ruth!

She was the best Mother in law. Our biggest sadness in life is that we were not able to raise our children close to the family. Yet we could feel your love cross all the miles.

My thought and prayers are with my Uncle Byron, my cousins and their familes at this time. What a blessing it has been to have such a wonderful loving woman as my dear Aunt Renee. She has always held a very special place in my heart. Her love for her family, her strong faith and for life itself has touched so many lives. I treasure each and every memory. There must have been a joyous family reunion in heaven that day. I wish I could be there in person to give you all my love. My love and prayers go out to comfort you at this time.

My thoughts are with a loving and caring family who have parted, for a while, with a wonderful lady. I do not know how often Renee Gassman travelled the "extra mile", and I can't imagine for one minute that she ever kept a record, but, as a benficiary of her charity, kindness and friendship I am eternally grateful that such was the nature of the woman my family and I salute and remember at this time.
