Rick was a favorite counselor in the SLU 32nd ward. He will be missed. His son and daughter passed away not long before my dad passed away with cancer. He was a comforting voice while we talked about death and our responsibility to be forces for good in their absence.

KayeLynn and Family, As you know I knew Des well through tennis. I only met Rick a couple times but he had this presense about him that always made me stop and wonder what kind of greatness he was destined for. I have had similiar feelings when I have been around general authorities and other great men and women of the church.
KayeLynn your strength inspires me and in at least some way reminds me of the strength that Emma Smith must have had.
We love you and are praying for you!

KayeLynn, We will always remember Rick as an amazing example of love, faith, strength, and what a husband and father should be. He was a wonderful man who we will always remember as part of our courtship. Ricky and I met in the 32nd ward while Rick was serving in the bishopric and I (Tara) actually asked Ricky out on our first date at an FHE activity at your house. We have spoken a few times about how we have always looked up to the both of you as an example of what a marriage should be,and we hope to emulate that example throughout our lives. You have been and will continue to be in our prayers! He will be loved and missed dearly!!

I will always hold a dear spot in my heart for Brother Bastian. Along the side of his wife the were and are the greatest example of faith and love though times of sorrow. The example the were to us in the 32nd ward did not go unoticed. They showed us what to reach for when it came to love and living the gospel. Times will be hard and the sorrow would be there, but through their smiles they showed us the way. Brother Bastian was a great example of holding on when the world did not make sense. He counseled and gave us great hope, even when times were hard for him and his family. His courage was something to follow. In the last couple weeks I had the great chance to run into Brother Bastian twice. Both those times I received the greatest, warmest hugs one could ever recieve. With a wave and smile that stays in my heart forever.
To the Bastian family my thoughts and prayers are with thee at this time. His legecy with live on in so many of the lives that he touch as he served so many and especially the kids of the 32nd ward. Thank you for your time, service and great example, I will not let you down

I will forever remember Bishop Bastian as a man of faith and optimism. I recall a late night discussion at a relief society retreat for the 32nd ward. Then, Bro. Bastian told us of how he charmed Sis. Bastian into marrying him. You could see through their warm smiles that their love was ever stronger and brighter. He taught us of how to live a life worthy of such joy and happiness. Also, when I received my diploma at LDS Business College, I had the opportunity to shake Elder Perry’s hand; standing next to him was Bishop Bastian. I received a welcoming and loving embrace from Bishop Bastian. That experience and so many others will always hold a significant place in my heart. I know Rick Bastian is still standing with the righteous with open arms anxiously awaiting for us to graduate from our earthly exam. I love you Bastian family, you are beacons of light and of the believers.

I didn't know Rick well, but remember him from the 37th ward bishopric. I remember passing him in the institute only two Tuesdays ago. He will be missed.

Dear KayeLynn,
We just found out this morning about this stunning loss. Rick was the essence of what an involved parent and husband should be--cheerful, outgoing, and loving. And so committed to the gospel. What a wonderful legacy he leaves behind--and what a beautiful life you two have built together. I remember so fondly the great times we had at Lake Powell! We'll stop by-- and again, we wish you peace and our deepest condolences.

KayeLynn & Family,

His heritage is rich and his legacy will be long lasting. His influence is far-reaching and his loving memory will persist long beyond this mourning. His absence will be notable but his deeds and relationships will fill the void. He has handed this mortal baton to you now to carry in his honor on this side of the veil. Don't let it fall to the ground.

Thank you for allowing us to share a small thread of time with your great family.

Love,

Dear KayeLynn & family,

Back in the mid 1990's when Richard Herd (I'm Rich's business partner)was serving a mission in Korea I had the priviledge of Helping Rick with his company's group health insurance. On two occasions we had the chance to play golf together and what a delight he was to be around. You could tell that his family meant everything to him and he was a man of integrity and honesty. I am so sorry for your loss and offer my sincerest heartfelt condolences and sympathies at this time as well as my prayers. The gospel of Jesus Christ is true and I know Rick followed His teachings. God bless you now and always until that great reunion day when we all will rejoice together again.

Sincerely,

Kim Cullimore

KayeLynn and Family
The idea of legacy doesn't often come around in our day to day voabulary---but it is one that fits. Rick and Scott Kjar, serving a leaders to our young men---showed our son Matt that you could live fully, love fully, and embrace the gospel fully. Matt has done that with his own family, and as a leader of young men, year after year. May peace be yours in the quiet times.

Dear Bastian Family,

My heart goes out to you at this difficult time. I learned so much watching you, Brother and Sister Bastian, at the U of U 32nd Ward as you dealt with the loss of your two children with nothing but faith and conviction. You have taught those around you that with the Lord, we can find joy and peace in the midst of great trial. Your lives are monuments to the fact that we do have a loving Heavenly Father who is ever mindful of us. Thank you both for your love and examples, and may that love come back to you ten fold at this time to comfort and sustain you.

Much love,

We are sorry for your family’s loss. I remember showing up to church every Sunday in the UofU 32nd ward greeted by Brother Bastian’s big smile. He was genuinely interested in each member of the ward. I know the Lord has a great work to do and he has called home one of his most valiant servants to do the work. Loved ones parting from this world is only for a short time knowing that we have been blessed with the knowledge of our Heavenly Father’s plan of salvation. We love you and will always have you in our prayers. Love Casey and Tiffany Bullock

KayeLynn,
It's been a joy to be your neighbor and watch your family grow. I was overcome with warmth as I had the priviledge of looking at so many pictures of your life together. What a wonderful legacy of love you have built together. I hope you know how much we love all of you!

We lived in West Bountiful one house away and I will always remember Rick and KayeLynn out under the huge tree on their side yard. I remember watching Rick run while playing Church Softball and wishing I had that Thoroughbred stride that he and his sons had. My memories of that neighborhood is only saddened by the loss of another friend from that circle who has moved on to prepare the way for the rest of us. Bruce and Shaunna Haslam, Bountiful Utah

Family and Friends of Rick Bastian:
My sincere condolences on your loss. I did not have the privilege of knowing Rick personally, but understand he was a very generous and caring person. His service to The Road Home as part of the Development Committee was much appreciated. He was a valuable contributor to our community. My heart goes out to you all.

Please take care.

Rick's Family and Friends, I briefly met your dad during a job interview. I lost my oldest son in May and he shared with me the tragic loss of his son and daughter, he gave me words of encouragement that really helped me. I'm sure his son and daughter welcomed him and they are having a wonderful reunion. My prayers are with you in the coming days, months and years that you will be without him on this earth but, know he will always be with you in spirit. GOD BLESS

Your grief may ebb and flow. It has been said that each of us has this well deep inside of us that can be filled to the brim with grief. Every time we cry, we empty out some of the well. But the well fills again. The level of sorrow in your well may lessen as time passes, but it will never run dry. There will always be birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, and those days when the well seems to fill to its brim again. Allow yourself time to remember and mourn. It is part of your healing. Grief is a continuing journey.

October 21, 2009

KayeLynn and family, we are so sorry for your loss. We were shocked to hear the news and my heart goes out to you and your children during this hard time. Rick was a great counselor and friend to us during our engagement and a great influence on the values and goals we placed on our marriage. His spirit and influence will forever be a part of us. There must be a great work for your family to do on the other side for the Lord to take them from you so early. We love you and your family are our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Love,
