Sherman L. Rackley Obituary
Sherman L. Rackley
1922 ~ 2012
Sherman Louis Rackley, age 90, passed away peacefully Saturday, May 5, 2012, of natural causes surrounded by his family. He was born March 6, 1922 in Salt Lake City, and was the last surviving child of John Louis Rackley and Laura Fay Glass Rackley. Sherman served in the Armed Forces during WWII as a corporal, but due to a hand injury, was reclassified to service command at Bushnell General Hospital in Brigham City, and then worked as a surgical technician at Camp Roberts, California. He often said that when he was discharged on March 5, 1946, it was a happy day. One long motorcycle trip brought Sherman and Virginia Leona Nilsson together, and they were married on November 17, 1947 for 50 years-even though they said no one thought it would last. They were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on March 27, 1969. The family enjoyed many camping trips in a tent, a camper or trailer and later Sherm and Virginia loved traveling the world together. Sherman worked for Utah Poultry, was co-owner of the Bradshaw Auto Repair, worked for Garrett Freightliners city delivery, then spent 30 years driving for Utah Arizona Freight/Consolidated Freightways. He was also a member of the Lions club, an officer of the UMTA Credit Union, and after retiring, volunteered at Cottonwood Hospital for 8 years. Sherman was an avid left-handed bowler, participating in many leagues over the years, bowling up to January of this year. The highlight of his career was when he bowled a perfect 300 game in 2003. Sherman was raised in poverty during the difficult years of the depression, but he worked very hard to provide for his family and teach financial responsibility by his example. He was most proud of the fact that he had no debt.
Sherman is survived by his daughters Sharon, (Vern) Bair, Sandra (Mike Anderson) Stewart, Susan (George) Foss, 12 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by his wife Virginia and son Robert (Cathleen) Rackley. Like he always said, "Roll out the red carpet- the Rackleys are coming home!"
Funeral services will be Saturday, May 12, 2012 at 1:00 pm at the Murray 10th Ward, 5750 South Nena Way (100 West). Family and friends may visit from 11:30 to 12:45 prior to the service. Interment will be at Murray City Cemetery, 5490 South Vine Street, Murray, Utah. On line condolences may be sent to www.memorialutah.com. Funeral directors, Murray Memorial Mortuary.
