Shirley passed away peacefully at her home in Orem, Utah on August 1, 2013.
Shirley was born November 13, 1942 in Logan, Utah. She is the eldest of five children born to John Owen Barton and Emma Marie Lemon. Shirley grew up in Price, Utah and graduated from Carbon High School. She was very active in high school and served as Seminary President, Student body secretary and Pep Club.
Shirley attended Brigham Young University and graduated in elementary education. She was involved in student body leadership and events. While attending BYU, Shirley met the love of her life, Gary Palmer.
They were married in the Salt Lake City Temple, September 10, 1964, and shared a blissful marriage for 49 years.
She was the kind of person who loved everyone and made all feel included and accepted, truly a peacemaker. Shirley taught second grade for 17 years at Franklin Elementary School in Provo, Utah. Her gifts
of love and patience had a profound effect on the students she taught, who never left without a hug.
Shirley was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served her church in many capacities including; primary, relief society, young women's and the Timpanogos Temple. She blessed the lives of all her knew her, most importantly her beloved family. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, ever encouraging, smiling, lifting, and building up with words of praise, never a negative word.
Shirley will be deeply missed by those who have survived her including her husband Gary; her children Andrea, Brett, Paul, Tiffany, Tyler, and Ryan; her siblings Paul, DeAnn, and Becky; and 21 grandchildren.
Her love and example will never be forgotten.
Funeral services will be held Monday, August 5th, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at the Cherry Hill 7th Ward Chapel 135 East 2000 South, Orem. A visitation will be held Sunday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Sundberg-Olpin Mortuary, 495 South State Street, Orem and also Monday at the ward chapel 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Interment will be in the Orem City Cemetery.
