Salt Lake City, Utah-Vernon Leo Hemingway, 89, of Salt Lake City, passed away on March 3, 2013, peacefully with his wife by his side.
He was born June 6, 1923 the son of George and Electa Eyrie Elliott Hemingway. He was a World War II Veteran.
He married Nola Marie Hollingshed on August 16, 1948 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They were married for 64 years. He had many jobs until he found the job he loved working for the U.S. Postal Service for 33 years as a letter Carrier. He also worked for the LDS church office building in custodial care.
Dad was a very loving, gentle man. He loved to fish and have family parties. He loved to eat! He was a very hard working man, and provided for his family by working two jobs for many years. He was a faithful member of the LDS church, having served in many callings throughout the years. He loved the gospel.
He is survived by his Wife Nola Marie, sons Paul (Sally), Roger, A. Shawn (Zeta), daughters Winona Hemingway Sant (Brian), Cheryl Ann Gilbert, Trudy, Wendy, Lori Peterson (Greg), 23 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Also survived by two foster children Donald Crank (Ernestine) and Delphine Tree.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Edwin E, M Elliot, R. Walt, Samuel R., William K., Cecil, his twin brother Vern T., sisters Ivy H. Volz, Irene H. Butcher, half-brothers George and Reuben Hemingway, half-sister Grace H. Hovermale, and one great granddaughter.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M., Thursday March 7, 2013 at the Rose Park 7th Ward North Chapel, 1155 N 1200 W. A Viewing will be held from 7-9 Wednesday, March 6 at Deseret Mortuary, 36 East 700 South, Salt Lake City, UT, and one hour prior to services at the church.
The family would like to give special thanks for the TLC, his main care giver his daughter Winona gave him in his last years. Also to Haven Hospice, Angel in the home, and Garden Terrace Rehab Center for the last few weeks. Friends may leave condolences at www.memorialutah.com
