Walter Thomas Howick Obituary
Walter Thomas Howick
Jan 4, 1932 - Aug 6, 2013
Walter Thomas Howick, our loving husband, father and grandfather passed away at the age of 81.
Those who truly knew Walt know one thing for certain: LaJuana, his wife of 63 years, is a saint for loving him for all of those 63 years. Walt was entertaining, loyal, caring, independent minded (some might say stubborn) and a wonderful spouse, dad and grandpa.
He is survived by his wife LaJuana, his two children Larry and Ann, his brother and best friend Bud, his sister Donna, his brother Keith, and his seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. His family was the most important thing in his life and until the day he died, he would do anything for those he loved. He was truly a rock to his family and will be dearly missed.
His graveside service will be held at Memorial Estates (3115 East 7800 South, Salt Lake City) at 1:00 p.m. on August 10, 2013.
Everyone who knew Walt had a story about Walt-stories that were hilarious, unbelievable, sometimes inappropriate and always interesting. Like his hero, John Wayne, Walt lived a life fit for a Western. He retired in Fremont, Utah-his favorite place in the world-to make sure hunting, fishing and spectacular scenery were in his back yard. Gone with him is his mental atlas that included made-up names for every road, trail and path crisscrossing the mountains of southern Utah. He was a sporting enthusiast and a staunch University of Utah supporter and could frequently be seen sitting courtside at Ute basketball games (R.I.P. Rick Majerus). His family will miss Walt's unique brand of toughness, humor and love-the combination of which sometimes was exhibited in his frequent one-liners. When one of us gets thirsty, we'll have to remember to tell each other, in Walt's sympathetic words, to suck a rock.
