William C. Howe Obituary
William C. Howe, Jr.
1921 ~ 2012
Bill Howe passed away peacefully on November 17, 2012 surrounded by his loving family.
Born April 2, 1921 to William C. and Leila H. Howe in Salt Lake City, Bill attended Wasatch, Bryant, and East High He graduated from the University of Utah in 1942 with a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering. He later added a M.S. degree from the University of Wisconsin.
In lieu of military service, Bill was awarded a War Research Assistantship at the University of Wisconsin. He and his team worked on critical synthetic rubber development projects. After the war, Bill began working for Standard Oil Company of California as a design engineer.
He married Rowena Alexander on May 14, 1946 in Salt Lake City, Utah. His bride joined him in their Berkeley bungalow and a couple of years later they built a house in Menlo Park and started their family. In 1956 he returned to Salt Lake City to enter the steel fabricating business, but soon found his real life's work as the owner of Howe Building Products. With his own business he was free to explore his continuing interest in sun control and energy savings, which he greatly enjoyed and pursued until the age of 89, when he decided it was finally time to retire.
Bill was a charter member of Mount Olympus Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder. More recently, he became a member of Wasatch Presbyterian Church. He was active in the Salt Lake Rotary Club and a number of other organizations throughout his life.
On their 66th wedding anniversary in 2012, Bill quipped, "I think this is gonna last." He and Rowena traveled all over the world, including all 50 states. His final grand tour was a 45-day cruise of the Atlantic and Mediterranean in the fall of 2011. Other lifelong pleasures included enjoying the outdoors, skiing, playing tennis and bridge, reading, music and practicing Chopin waltzes on the piano. He always liked learning new things and meeting new people. Bill was a gracious and welcoming host, and a friend to everyone he met. He will be dearly missed.
Bill and Rowena had three children-Denise, David, and Douglas (Charlotte); and also three grandchildren-Sara Wood, Peter Howe (Carrie Durward), and Zoe Gray (Brad). His son David preceded him in death.
A memorial service will be held at Wasatch Presbyterian Church, 1626 South 1700 East, on Saturday, November 24, 2012 at 12:00 noon, followed by a light lunch. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Bill's name to the Wasatch Presbyterian Church Pipe Organ Restoration Fund or to the Salvation Army would be appreciated.
