MATTHEW WAGSTAFF Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Oct. 2 to Oct. 3, 2010.
Matthew Gabriel Wagstaff 1976 ~ 2010 A son, a husband, a brother, an uncle, and our HERO, Chief Warrant Officer 3 Matthew Gabriel Wagstaff was taken from us on September 21st 2010 while serving his country in Afghanistan. Matt's journey on this earth ended flying a helicopter following his dream of being a pilot.Matt was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on February 8th, 1976. As a child Matt was a bright, shiny star that excelled in everything he did. Even at the early age of five Matt always dreamed of flying and ultimately piloting the Space Shuttle. The dream never faltered and followed him through his college years at Utah State University with a degree in Aerospace Technologies. He grew to be an extraordinary man, always setting the bar high for others to follow. Matt would help anyone in need and always put others before himself. Even though Matt was large in stature, anyone close to him knew he was a big teddy bear, with the softest, most caring heart. Matt entered the Army in January 2002 and arrived at Fort Campbell in May 2007. He was a UH-60 Black Hawk pilot assigned to Bravo Company, 5th Battalion, 101st Airborne, 101st Combat Aviation Brigade. Matt was married on January 2, 2010 to Tiffany Steele of Clarksville, TN. They met five days after his return from his second tour of duty, first tour of duty in Afghanistan, in 2008. The couple has shared much love and many laughs in their courtship before Matt proposed on November 2, 2009. Matt and Tiffany had a love that could not be broken and he made sure that she knew daily how much he loved her and their puppy, Lily. His awards and decorations included (more pending): Bronze Star Medal; Air Medal; Army Commendation Medal; Joint Meritorious Unit Award; Meritorious Unit Commendation; National Defense Service Medal; Afghanistan Campaign Medal; Iraq Campaign Medal; Global War on Terror Expeditionary Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Army Service Ribbon; Overseas Service Ribbon; NATO Medal and Army Aviator Badge. Matt is survived by his wife Tiffany (the greatest love of his life); parents Ron and Suzanne; brother Jason (Amanda); sister Cassie aka "Cassimo" (Wayne "D" Burton); grandparents Lou and Patty Lashure, Ann and Wally Cardwell; many nieces and nephews; his in-laws Katy Byam and Bobby Steele (Brenda); many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Matt was preceded in death by grandparents Walt and Fae Wagstaff. Funeral services to be held Tuesday, October 5th, 2010 at 12:00 p.m. at Jenkins Soffe South Valley, 1007 W. So. Jordan Pkwy (10600 S), South Jordan, Utah. Online webcast and link available by viewing Matthew's obituary at www.jenkins-soffe.com beginning at 11:45 a.m. Visitation to be held Monday, October 4th, 2010 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Jenkins Soffe South Valley. Graveside services will be held at the Utah Veterans Memorial Cemetery at Camp Williams immediately following funeral services, 17111 S. Camp Williams (Redwood) Road, Bluffdale. In keeping with Matt's wishes he requested in lieu of flowers an Educational Fund be established for the surviving children of the family so they can pursue their dreams as he was able to do. Contributions to the "CW3 Matthew Wagstaff Memorial Fund" can be sent to Fort Campbell Federal Credit Union, Building 88 Michigan Avenue, Fort Campbell, KY 42223. Hello,
We realize that we are very late to express our deepest condolences, but we wanted to let your family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to deployed troops this week and we'll be dedicating several of these to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and the hometown of Matthew G. Wagstaff US Army Chief Warrant Officer 3. We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.

Sincerely,

There are no words to express my deepest sympathy to you and your family. But I have something that was given me when my husband was killed in action and it goes like this:
"Those we love don't go away
They walk beside us every day, Unseen, unheard, but always near, Still loved, still missed, and Always dear." I hope these words help every one during the healing process. The plaque that these words were on came from my very special CWO. He is a wonderful man. God bless them all for the job they love and yet they hate to do.
May God bless you all and comfort you each and every day and I will pray for all.
To Cheif Warrant Officer Matthew Wagstaff May you rest in peace for your next job is easy a Guardian Angel for all. You are our American Hero. Thanks You very much.

I had the pleasure of serving with Matt in Mosul Iraq in 2005/2006. I spent many days - getting to know him. He had a wonderful sense of humor and always found a way to make others smile. I was a Captain then and Matt had the patience to teach me how to manage his job (no easy task: I am not an aviator) so that I could cover his position when he took his mid-tour leave. He returned to the chaos that I had left him with a smile on his face - he greeted me, made a joke about how things could only get better now that he had returned we had a great laugh and then he went to fixing everything I had let slip in his absence. we spoke often of Motorcycles, family and home - I have great memories (of a not so great deployemnt) because of my friendship with Matt. We have lost a great pilot, Army Warrant Officer, but most importantly a friend!

To the Wagstaff Family - My prayer is this poem I wrote will comfort you. It is: WELCOME HOME MY HERO - From the time I was conceived God had for me a plan. He wanted me to get involved to help my fellow man. I know your hearts are heavy & you miss having me there but I'm with God in heaven where no one has a care. Heaven is so beautiful I'm walking streets of gold. Now I'm serving others including saints of old. It really was amazing when I walked through the gate I saw the beauty of this place and I could hardly wait; to come into the presence of the Father and the Son. Hearing Him say to me the priceless words "WELL DONE!" You should see my mansion it's a sight to see. Jesus had it custom built especially for me. I'm having the best time up here so don't be sad and blue. I'm looking forward to the day when I can usher you into this very special place where freedom's truly free and you will have the honor to worship Him with me.
Thank you Matthew for your service.

February 23, 2011

Those we love don't go away.
They walk beside us every day
Unseen, Unheard, but always near.
Still loved, still missed, and always dear.

May you rest in peace in Gods loving warm arms. You in good hands now. Peace.

I know there are no words to say at this time, except how sorry that I am. I truly feel your loss and pain. My thoughts and prayers are with you always. Matthew will never be forgotten.

For you every single soldier
Those who served so honorable
Your life was forever altered
While I’m home safe and free
I stand with grateful admiration
I stand respectful and so proud
I know I’m only a civilian
And I don’t even know if it’s allowed

But I salute you; allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
Even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
My humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you.

For those missing in action;
for those who didn’t make it home.
I know you’re in God’s presence you are not alone.
For every neatly folded flag;
for every shattered family
I will do the only thing I know to dignify your memory.

I salute you, allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
my humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.

I salute you .

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to our Brother-in-Arms CWO Matthew Wagstaff. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Matthew. And to Matthew it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the ultimate sacrifice he made for his country while opposing enemy forces in Afghanistan. No greater love is shown than a man lay down his life for another. Matthew, you are a brave American Warrior, a true Patriot and a national Hero. With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,335 military Legionnaire Veterans of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion in Shreveport, Louisiana, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Matthew’s family and loved ones.

I am Deeply Saddened to learn of the loss of CWO Matthew Wagstaff. The Price this Brave Young Soldier and his family have paid for this country and for freedom, Will Not Be Forgotten.

There will Never Be Enough Ways to Humbly Thank our Young Heroes for their Sacrifices, my brother among them, killed in action in Vietnam in 1967.

"Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and He shall sustain thee." ~ Psalm 55:22 ~

I am sincerely hoping that you can feel the thoughts of caring and support that surround you today and in the difficult days ahead, as this Grateful Country mourns with you, for Someone Very Precious to you, Who Is A True American Hero to all of us.
You are in my thoughts and prayers.

My heart aches knowing that Matt is no longer with us. I was privileged to have spent countless hours with Matt nearly every afternoon at Utah State University teaching him about aviation, and sharing our love of helicopters. He was one of my most memorable students, and I am very grateful for his honorable service and ultimate sacrifice. There is comfort in knowing he was doing what he loved.
My prayers are with his family.

Matt's death has shocked and saddened me soo much. Your family has been in my thoughts and prayers. There really are no words to express how sad we are about this loss. Matt was taken much too soon from this life. Matt's sacrifice will not be forgotten. Matt and I met at Utah State 14 years ago through my roomate Erin (Gilchrist) Glazier. Matt was my date to the USU Homecoming dance (we were platonic friends). His obituary really is a great tribute to the young man I knew. Matt definitely was always willing to help others and one of the most honorable people I've ever known. Thank you for helping Matt to reach his potential and find happiness. I am soo saddened by this loss but comforted knowing Matt was able to fulfill soo many of his dreams.
