I have been thinking about Ruth and missing her so much lately. It is hard to believe that she has been gone over a year now. She was a "once in a lifetime friend" to me and I am so very thankful that the Lord allowed me to enjoy her friendship. I miss our chats and sharing memories of our years at East High - she was the best teacher I ever had. She continued to teach me throughout my life. Nancy, Allyson, Judd and Jennie Jo - please know how thankful I am that you shared your precious Mother with me. I hope that we can still keep in touch - I love all of you. I will always love Ruth and treasure our friendship.
Much love,
Sharon

Dear Funk FAMily, I was blessed to get to know my second cousin, Ruth Funk, only a few years ago. What an amazing woman she was! I missed so much by not knowing her earlier. My dad, Harold Reynolds, Jr. wrote about the joy of listening to her play piano as a child while she was taking lessons from his mother, Millie. My family and I send you our heartfelt sympathy on your loss. We have made a donation in her memory to the Young Musicians Program of the University of CAlifornia at Berkeley.

Dear Funk family,
I just wanted to let you know how sorry I am at the passing of Ruth. She truly was a remarkable woman. I had the privilege of living in her basement for about a year and a half beginning in 2007. I've no doubt she played an inspired role as I met, dated and eventually married my husband, while living with her. I was an older single woman with some reservations about marriage and she spent hours talking to me about the joys of her own marriage and what happiness it brought her. She also told me that everyone who rented her basement either married or had a child while they lived there, so it was practically destiny! She was a delight to talk to and so freely shared her love and kindness and treated everyone like they were the the most cherished person in her life. What a great woman! She'll be sorely missed but thought of fondly and often by all who knew her. I know I'll never forget the influence she had on my life at a pivotal time.
With gratitude and sympathy,
Becky (Taylor) Nichols

I was one of her students at East High. She also was a good friend of my fathers. They went to East High together. She loved him for when she was ina traffic accident and hurt her hands, my father operated on them and restored her ability or paly piano again. I so respected her for her excellence in music but also for her very large testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ which she displayed in everything she did. I will always remember what a fine lady she was and is Hawley Barrett

I found out only today that my dear teacher had passed. Mrs. Funk was our girls' glee teacher at Hillside Jr. High in 1967, and her enthusiasm and expertise were an inspiration to me. I loved the fact that her teacher stamp said "Ruth Hardy Fun." As a new Young Women president under her Personal Progress program in about 1978, I traveled to Salt Lake and sought her out at the Young Women offices, where she greeted me with her usual grace. I left there filled with her confidence, and was so pleased to have expressed my love to her. Just a few years ago, my daughter Emily had the opportunity to meet Sister Funk, and she was as impressed as I'd been 40 years earlier. How blessed we were to have known this great lady. We send our condolences to you.

Dear Family of Ruth Funk, She was my a cappella teacher at East High, 1969-1970. I remember her as a beautiful, brilliant, sensitive leader who was new to the school, as I was. That year, the choir held a party at my father's ranch (Hinckley Brothers') by the airport. It was a happy, memorable evening, and my parents were positively impressed with Ruth. She had a great influence on my friends and me.

Dear Jerry and Nancy,
The funeral was magnificent. Ruth must have enjoyed every minute of it. Her beautiful posterity all together in their best clothes was a thrilling sight as she would say.
I don't think anyone could have said adequately the contribution that both of you made to her life, especially in her last years.
What a lesson in love and respect you both are!
May God bless you both always,
Bliss and Kathy

Dear Funk Family,
I was saddened at learning of the loss of my dear friend, Ruth. She was a wonderful example of love and tenderness to all whose lives she touched. My dear wife Joy (Trauffer), since she was a young girl, enjoyed a loving association with Ruth, and has now had a chance to meet her on the other side of the veil. I have fond memories of my association with Ruth, as our paths crossed in the Public School System. She had an exhuberance for life which was contagious, and passed this trait to all who came in contact with her. May you all be blessed with your precious memory of this special daughter of our Heavenly Father

Thanks to Jennie Jo for bringing Ruth to the Funk reunion in Richmond last year. We were so happy to meet her. She was gracious and delightful to visit with. We treasure the few moments we had with her. I was especially touched that she would phone me to thank me for something we had given her. What a beautiful soul! We send our love to her family.

Dear Funk Family,
I treasure the friendship I have with your precious mother. Never will I meet such a great woman like her. Her quick mind, wealth of experience and unbridled enthusiasm stayed with her to the end. Her joie d’ vivre was amazing and kindness was her way of life.
Her capacity seemed endless. She saw greatness in every project she accepted to undertake. It is no wonder she was honored with doctorates from both BYU and the University of Utah. She was a mentor to so many as well as myself. We flocked to her to the end because we loved her and valued her wisdom. We thought we could be a comfort to her but came away strengthened ourselves. I will miss her greatly.
In her last years despite the loss of sight to drive, ability to walk, or much hearing to enjoy, the minute she knew of an upcoming concert, she would respond, “I’m going!” with no concern about the hurdles to face getting there. She was so quick to support the talents of others when she had such great ability herself. What a blessing that with all of her opportunities she chose to serve rather than be applauded.
Thank you for the great care you have given her that allowed her to stay in her home that she loved so.
With much love,
Dorotha Smart

Dear Funk Family
I knew Ruth from service with the Utah PTA and also working with the Utah State Board of Education. I am so sorry to hear about her death and my thoughts and prayers are with your family. Ruth was a remarkable woman! She was a great crusader for our children and youth and a first class advocate for public education. She was a classy lady with a huge heart and a terrific sense of humor. I feel so grateful that I had the opportunity to rub shoulders with this wonderful child of God.

Dear Nancy, Allison, Judd and Jennie Jo,
So many memories flood our minds as we remember the influence of your sweet mother in the lives of the Koelliker family. From days of mutual as youth in the Parleys 3rd ward to listening to her many messages to the youth of the Church and finaly seeing her nurture our dear mother in her final years, our lives have been blessed and we are grateful to have witnessed her leadership and felt her friendship. We have great love for this wonderful elect lady's acts of kindness and good in our lives. Our thoughts and prayers are with you as you celebrate her life and her many accomplishments. You have been blessed with a mother and father who know and love the Lord. We too feel that blessing from having known them.

Dear Judd and family,
Heartily sorry for your loss. Your mother touched my life in ways too numerous to recount here. Her influence for good will be felt in my family through the generations. Under her guiding hand, the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully into my life as she challenged me lovingly but firmly in an important decision I had to make. That experience proved foundational to my progress in the Gospel. One cannot think of her without humming and singing the music she taught us those years at East. She once told me that you loved and cared so much for other people that you sometimes forgot all about yourself. I know that to be true of you and your mother. I am eternally grateful to her. The Lord Bless You and Keep You at this time of sorrow. You are in my prayers.

Dear Allyson, Clint and Family,
Your angel mother blessed lives everywhere she went. Her life of unselfish service has touched us in so many ways and we are so thankful that these past four years we have been neighbors and able to see precious Ruth quite frequently.
Her willingness to share such a solid testimony of the Savior and of eternal families was an indication of how passionate she felt about both. Her smile and her warmth shined even brighter for us, knowing how she struggled to see. Her exemplary service to people throughout the world, combined with her compassion for people of every faith, was impressive. Ruth's heart was pure and her love for life was a powerful model for all of us.
May you and your own children and grandchildren be comforted by your knowledge of Heavenly Father's great plan of happiness and of your own consecrated service.
We love you and send our depth of thanks for your years of valuable friendship and trust. We are sorry that an assignment away from Utah will not allow us to attend your precious mother's funeral, but we will be thinking of you.
Our love forever,
Elizabeth Darley Gessel

How I love my dear Sister Funk. Not only was she endlessly patient with a very lazy piano student, but her love and devotion for my own dear parents is invaluable. She and the Cannons visited my dad at the hospice center a day before his death. For my whole life, she and my own mother have served as the best examples of what it means to be a good woman. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Dear Family,
It takes a very dynamic person to make a lifelong impression on a teenager. I was chosen to sing with Crawford Gates conducting a youth
chorus. We rehearsed and performed in the Tabernacle. I LOVED seeing Sis. Funk play the piano. She was beautiful, enthusiastic and always had a smile for everyone. Her love of music was contagious! I caught it.

Jennie Jo, I'm not sure that you even remember me. (Tammy LaBeau) now Tamara L. McMurdie, from Logan Utah. I would visit your Mom, Sis. Hortense Smith and Ardeth Kapp all the time. Your Mother showed me the final raft-draft of the YW Medallion at your home in SLC. She told me then, "Tammy, you're going to complete your goals and wear her proudly." That I did!
I talked to Hortense a few weeks ago and she told me that your Mother was not doing so well, but her spirit was still so bright!
My heart and prayers are with you and your family at the difficult time. However, I do know that she is walking and running through the fields of Heaven, so happy to see all those that have gone before her, and just think of the reunion with your sweet Dad! Priceless!
We now live in Connecticut and have three older children. Our oldest daughter is in heaven, and I pray she gets to meet your Mother!
Take Good Care My Dear Friend!
With Deepest Love, Tamara LaBeau [email protected]

To the family of Ruth and Marc Funk:
When I returned from the Marines years ago and landed in the Parley's Way Ward, Ruth took me under her wing and I found a remarkable and loyal friend. Years later while a Deputy Sheriff in Salt Lake, Ruth and Marc saw me investigating an accident, stopped and got out of their car to talk to me and renew our friendship. She and Marc have left an indelible imprint upon my life and I shall never forget them. She will be missed.
Rest In Peace Ruth 'till we meet again...at Jesus' feet

Dear Allison and family~
My heartfelt condolences at the passing of your dear mother. It has been many years since our paths have crossed. But I want you to know how I appreciate your kindness to me at a challenging time in my life and enjoyed serving with you in Young Women's. I had such a respect for your mother and remember quoting from an article she had written in one of our meetings. You smiled and then teased me a bit because I didn't know she was your mother nor that your father was my dentist! Such good people and you are a living example of that goodness. You are in my thoughts at this tender time-- God bless you~

Dear Nancy, Allison, Judd, and Jennie Jo,
Please accept my love and sympathy on the passing of your sweet mother, my beloved friend, Ruth. I am thrilled for her because I know that she is in a better place and with her sweetheart. Oh, how I am missing her already!
She came into my life and took me under her wing at East High School, and we remained close and dear friends since then. Words can't adequately describe my feelings for her and how much she influenced my life, and that of my husband and children as well. I will never forget my last visit with her because she insisted on preparing a light lunch, in spite of her frailities. My son was with me and played his guitar for her. She loved it so much and actually was able to persuade him to sing as he played. Her words to him will remain with him and me forever. She told him, "You just can't buy a gift like yours," and she was right.
Thank you so much for sharing your Mother with me for all of these years. Thank you for making it possible to stay in her home - something that was so important to her. Jennie Jo, thank you for informing me of her passing last night so that I didn't have to find out about it in the news.
Please accept my family's love and sympathy. May you find comfort and peace at this difficult time. I love you all. I love your Mother and will miss her. May "The Lord Bless Her and Keep Her" forever.
Much love,
