David Harry Simister Obituary
1928 ~ 2013
David Harry Simister, 84, dearly, dearly loved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, passed away Tuesday February 26, 2013 in Salt Lake City, Utah, after a short illness.
Dave was born March 23, 1928 in San Francisco, California, to George Frederick William and Beatrice Maud Aitken Simister. He grew up in San Francisco and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1946. He was called to serve a mission in the British Isles for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1949. During this time he developed a deep love for England and the British people that lasted his whole life. He married Mabel Gregory Cottam on October 21, 1952 in the Salt Lake Temple. They enjoyed 60 happy years together. Dave enlisted in the US Army in 1953 and he and Mabel spent the next six years traveling the globe. They raised their family in Okinawa, Lebanon, Pennsylvania and Concord, California, before moving to Salt Lake City in 1969.
Dave was employed by Coca-Cola for over 30 years, moving up the ranks from route driver to Vice President and General Manager Bonneville Canning for Coca-Cola. He was selected as President of the Utah-Idaho Soft Drink Association. In his later years he was employed as Operations Manager for Zion's Securities. After retirement, he and Mabel served an LDS mission in the Preston England Temple. He had a sharp mind with a perfect memory for dates and places and was a stickler for punctuality. He loved fast cars, traveling and good conversation. He and Mabel enjoyed an active social life with many wonderful friends. He was a devout member of the LDS Church and served in many callings and organizations, but was at his best when teaching and being a missionary. Family was everything to him. We will miss him.
Dave is survived by his wife, Mabel, children Debra (Robert) Parker, David (Gayle), Scott (Patricia) and Lisa (Carl) Ellis, 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, brother Bud Simister and sister Dorothy Griffiths.
He was preceded in death by his infant daughter Karen, infant grandson Colby Simister, infant great-grandson Alexander Burrell and two brothers Roi and Vernon.
The family would like to thank the staff of the MICU at the VA Hospital for their exceptional care of Dave and also Dr. Janelle Jager and N.P. Jeanie O'Donnell, whose medical expertise gave Dave an additional eight years of life.
Family and friends are invited to attend the funeral held Monday March 4, 2013 at 12:00 noon at the Gunderson Lane Chapel, 1925 East Gunderson Lane (4101 South), Salt Lake City with a viewing prior to the services from 10:30-11:30 a.m.
A viewing will also be held Sunday evening, March 3, 2013 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Valley View Stake Center, 2245 East 3900 South, Salt Lake City. Interment will be at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the missionary fund of the LDS Church.
