Shirley Nondis Howell May (loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend) passed away on March 8, 2014. She was born on November 25, 1924 in Logan, Utah to Charles Reuben Howell and Verna Marie Hansen. Her parents divorced prior to her birth. When Shirley was five years old, her mother married John Wilkes Matkin. She had three brothers, one sister, three step-brothers and three step-sisters. Shirley graduated from North Cache High School in 1943 and began working for Geneva Steel. She joined the U.S. Coast Guard Women's Reserve, in 1945 and was honorably discharged in 1946. She married James Madison May on February 5, 1949. They were sealed in the Logan Temple on June 26, 1959. Shirley was the mother of three children, James (Susan) May, Shirley Ann (Robert) Fotheringham, and Jack (Vicki) May. She was blessed with seven grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. Shirley began working for Provo High School in the lunch department in 1968 and retired in 1988. She made many life-long friends while working as a lunch lady.
She was preceded by her mother; step-father; husband; brothers, Wade and Doyle Howell; and sister, Athalie Allen. She is survived by her brother, Jack; her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and many friends who love her dearly. Shirley was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and held a number of church callings during her life.
We are especially appreciative of friends, family, and Ward members who exhibited loving service to Mom after she started having health problems. Thank you for your kindness!
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, March 21, 2014 at the Provo Peak 7th Ward Chapel, 502 E. 200 N., Provo, UT. Friends may call at the Berg Mortuary of Provo, 185 East Center Street, Thursday, March 20 from 6-8:00 p.m. and at the church Friday from 9:30-10:45 a.m. prior to services. Interment will be in the Provo City Cemetery. Condolences may be sent online at www.bergmortuary.com.
