James Henry Newman

1941 - 2014 | Obituary Condolences
James Henry Newman
1941 ~ 2014
James (Jim) Henry Newman passed away on May 16, 2014 after a long, hard battle with physical illness. We lost our loving father, grandfather and brother. Jim left a legacy of love, hard work, and sheer will and determination to overcome all adversity and physical limitations imposed by this temporal world.
Jim was born on March 17, 1941 in Murray, Utah, to James William and Edith Viola Butterfield Newman. He was raised in Butterfield Canyon and later moved to Herriman, Utah where he lived the rest of his life. Jim's passion for moving dirt began at an early age, helping his father in Butterfield Canyon. He was a heavy equipment operator for numerous heavy highway contractors and later started a career with Gibbons & Reed Construction. Jim dedicated his life to his job, becoming a leader and working his way to Superintendent. Jim was responsible for several major projects throughout the Western States. His knowledge and expertise was utilized on some of these major projects, including roads over mountains, major highways, dam construction, airports, and environmental cleanup in Idaho, New Mexico, Wyoming, Colorado, Arizona, Nevada, and Utah. Jim retired from Granite Construction (formerly Gibbons & Reed Construction) in 1998 to join his son Brenen James Newman in the company he started in the fall of 1996, with one 580 backhoe and one pipe layer, which has now grown to a large, thriving business. Brenen founded J&B Excavating and used his father's initial first, as a tribute for the legacy of construction and knowledge his father passed on to him. Jim continued to have a "job" to go to every day while he continued to consult and share his knowledge of the construction industry with his son and the many employees they now employ, often using tough love and criticism, as his way of passing down his knowledge and commitment that, "a job not done perfect is a job not worth doing."
Jim is survived by his daughter Cindy Newman De Las Heras and her husband Ignacio and their children, Meaghan, Josh, Lauren, and Emily, his son Brenen James Newman and his wife Marchel and their children, Keaton, Cannon, and LaKenzie, his brother Reed William Newman and his wife Billie, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Jim created a legacy for his family, by living a life of selflessness, working relentlessly for his family in spite of enduring physical pain daily. He taught that hard work, dedication to family, and kindness led to a life of great success. He taught that if there was a problem or obstacle in life, to get up and go to work and it will work out in the end.
