John Edward Janssen Obituary
John Edward Janssen (Jack), 96, passed away on May 20, 2014. Born April 29, 1918 in Brooklyn, New York to Frederick William and Anna Werlein Janssen. He grew up in Ridgewood, Brooklyn, New York. Jack graduated from Manhattan College with a Bachelors of Science Degree in 1940. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in October 1940 in Medical Detachment, 104 Field Artillery Battalion, 27th Infantry Division. Jack served stateside, Hawaii, North Africa, Italy, France and Germany. He was discharged in 1946 after WWII. He served in the Army Reserves until 1968. He retired as a Major, Medical Service Corps.
Married Donna May Gygi October 7, 1954 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Their marriage was solemnized October 7, 1955 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He served for many years in Elders Quorum leadership, as a ward clerk, in the scouting program, and was a faithful home teacher.
Jack was employed by New York State Employment Service and Utah Job Service for 35 years. His assignments included: interviewer, unemployment analyst and interstate coordinator.
He enjoyed reading, traveling, model railroading, coin collecting, grandkids and telling jokes.
He is survived by his wife, Donna; sons, John D. (Mary), Mark E. (Marjorie); daughter, Christine Layton (Mayland); 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; sister, Caroline Davis; brother-in-law, R. Kent Gygi; and nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents; father and mother-in-law; brothers, Fred and Harry; brothers-in-law, Robert Davis and Robert L Gygi; sisters-in-law, Cele and Louisa.
The family wishes to express appreciation to the staff of Legacy House of Taylorsville and Aspire Hospice for their loving care.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 29, 2014, at the Hillcrest Ward, 495 E. 5600 S., Murray, Utah at 11:00 a.m. A viewing will be held Wednesday, May 28th at Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary, 4760 S. State Street, Murray, Utah from 6 to 8 p.m., and from 10 to 10:45 a.m. at the church prior to services on Thursday. Burial will be in the Murray City Cemetery.
