John Gerrit Van Gelder was born May 12, 1942 in Heerlen, Limburg, The Netherlands. He passed away July 19, 2014 from oral cancer. He was the oldest son of Frans Joseph Van Gelder and Theresa Maria Oelen. John immigrated to the United States with his family in 1953 and settled in Cut Bank, Montana.
He attended Montana State College in Bozeman and Northern Montana College in Havre and received a Two-Year Vocational-Technical Certificate in Drafting.
July 31, 1965, John married Janet Marie Skov at St. Margaret's Catholic Church in Cut Bank, Montana in a double wedding ceremony with John's brother, Frans Albert and his wife Diane Marie Durham.
John worked for the Montana Highway Department in Helena, Montana until 1970. He then worked for Morrison Knudsen in Langdon, North Dakota until 1972. In 1972 John and Janet moved to Salt Lake City. John worked for Western Steel, Allen Steel, and ultimately Mark Steel as a detailer or project manager. He retired in 2000.
Once retired, John and Janet enjoyed traveling, planning their next remodel project on their home, boating with family and friends, and photography.
He is survived by his wife, Janet; their two sons, Mark Frans (Tiffany) and Chris Gerrit (Misaki); their six grandchildren, Ethan, Courtney, Holland, Sebastian, Hiyori and Kotori; his brother, Jack Francis of West Jordan; and nephew Michael James Van Gelder and his family of Port Hueneme, California. He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Frans Albert, Johannes Peter Josef, Josef Jacobus Helena and two nephews, Steven Charles Van Gelder and Scott Allen Van Gelder.
Funeral Mass will be held Thursday, July 24, at 10:30 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 9757 South 1700 East, Sandy. There will be a viewing Wednesday 6-8 p.m. at Goff Mortuary, 8090 So. State, Midvale, with a Vigil Service starting at 7 p.m. Interment, Larkin Sunset Gardens.
