Lonnie LeRoy Moseley Obituary
1921 ~ 2014
Lonnie LeRoy Moseley, age 93, joined the thousands of veterans from World War II on Monday, August 11, 2014, who have passed away earning the honor of "the greatest generation any society has ever produced". Lonnie enlisted into the Army at Fort Douglas in 1943 and continued serving through WWII, Korea and Vietnam. During his service in WWII his P-47 Thunderbolt was shot down over Normandy. The Lestang family risked their lives to protect him until he could be rescued as the front lines moved. Our two families continue to maintain a strong connection. Later in his military career, Lonnie flew his L-5 through enemy fire to rescue 21 of our wounded soldiers, one at a time, at the Battle of Chosin Reservoir in Korea. Lonnie also served in Vietnam as did two of his sons. Thirty-three years after his enlistment, having returned to Fort Douglas, he retired as acting commander in 1974.
Lonnie's retirement years were filled with service to others, including 10 years of genealogical research on the royal families of African countries for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints archives. Throughout Lonnie's 33 year military career his wife, Carol, raised their four sons while living in diverse regions of the world: Roger, Russell Scott, Paul (deceased), Richard. Born April 7, 1921, Lonnie is the son of Edward Moseley and Laura Odom.
The family extends their heartfelt appreciation to Unified Fire Authority for their many acts of service to the family over the years and to the staff at the V.A. Hospital, Paramount Health and Rehabilitation, and Inspiration Hospice for their kind and caring service during the last weeks of his life. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Fistula Foundation in his name.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Aug 14, 2014 at 11am Big Cottonwood Stake, 6th Ward, 4930 S Westmoor Rd, Hollady UT. A viewing will be held before the service from 9-10:30am. Interment and graveside service will be held at 10am the following day at St. George City Cemetery, 650 East Tabernacle Street, St. George, Utah.
