Elizabeth J. (Johns) Flenniken 1920 ~ 2009 St. George, UT - Elizabeth Jane Sorensen Johns Flenniken passed away peacefully at her home in St. George, Utah at the age of 89 from causes related to old age. After a serious injury to her pancreas at the age of 25, she fought a 65 year battle as a "brittle" diabetic, never going a day without giving herself several shots of insulin. It could be said that she outlasted her disease. Elizabeth (Betty) was born on September 28, 1920 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Severin Lund Sorensen and Kate Mary Romney. She married Bernard William Johns in Los Angeles, California on December 30, 1938. Her marriage was later solemnized in the Los Angeles Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They had three sons: Bill (Anete), Bob (Sharon) and Jim (Shirley). She leaves behind her three sons, 14 grandchildren, 38 great-grand children, and three sisters, Joan, Marie and Deena. After moving to St. George, Utah in 1984, her husband passed away from cancer in 1986, after which she met and married Thomas E. Flenniken, whose wife had also recently died. Over their 23 years of marriage, Tom was the kindest and most patient caregiver that anyone could ever want or need. The Johns family has the utmost love for Tom, and words cannot properly express the gratitude and respect for his wonderful service. Many thanks also go to her neighbor and friend, Judy Allen, for the wonderful service she provided the last few months of her life to both Tom and Elizabeth. Elizabeth was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. After moving to St. George, she worked in the St. George Temple with B. W. Johns, prior to his death, as well as with Tom Flenniken. She and Tom also served a full-time mission in 1989 to the England Coventry Mission. Elizabeth took pride in being a "Romney," and we know that she was very excited to see her beloved mother again (Kate Romney), whom she lost at age 11. Elizabeth graduated with both a Bachelor's and Master's Degree in Education and was only a few units shy of receiving a PhD in Education. She was an elementary school teacher, assistant principal, and school counselor, prior to retiring after more than 30 years of service in the Alhambra School District (California). Throughout the years, she received many Teacher of the Year awards and was a highly respected administrator. She was known to be a person of very high energy and a perfectionist in getting things done. Funeral services will be held Friday, December 18, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at the St. George LDS 1st Ward Chapel, 591 West 500 North, St. George, Utah. Visitation will be held Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. at the chapel, prior to services. Interment will be on Saturday, December 19, at 10:00 a.m. at the Rose Hills Memorial Park at 3888 Workman Mill Road, Whittier, CA. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Metcalf Mortuary, 435-673-4221. Please visit our website at www.metcalfmortuary.com for condolences, obituary & funeral listings.
