Ann Jones Obituary

1941 ~ 2011
Ann Baker Jones, our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend passed away on September 23, 2011, at the age of 69. At the time, she was serving an LDS mission in South-Central Texas, but her time was cut short by a tragic accident.
Ann was born October 28, 1941, to Floyd Charles and Alice Winn Baker in Price, UT. She grew up in Salt Lake City, UT and graduated from South High in 1959. From 1964 to 1966, she served a mission in France. She married Steven Karl Jones on August 30, 1967, in the Salt Lake Temple. They had six children together. Ann's life was characterized by a love of learning, devotion to family and friends, and unselfish service to all. An avid reader, she sought learning and wisdom out of the best books by study and by faith. She found joy as a wife and mother and lovingly referred to her grandchildren as her "treasures". She was a loyal friend. She served faithfully in many church callings and found meaning in life by losing herself in the service of others.
She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Matthew; brother, Jay Baker; and brother-in-law, Parley Pike. She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Steve; five children: Todd (Melissa) Jones, Anissa (Rob) Wall, Mike (Shauna) Jones, Aaron (Kristin) Jones, and Ryan (Malissa) Jones; 17 grandchildren; siblings: Bill (Phyllis) Baker, Jack (Edith) Baker, Rena (Garry) Hewitt, and Betty Pike.
Funeral services will be held Friday, September 30, 2011, at 11 a.m. at the Taylorsville Utah North Stake Center, 1250 W. Atherton Dr. (4375 South), Taylorsville, UT. Friends may visit family on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Taylorsville 13th Ward Building, located at 1495 Tamarack Road, Taylorsville, UT, and Friday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Taylorsville Utah North Stake Center. Interment at Elysian Burial Gardens Cemetery.

My husband and I serve as Family Service Missionaries in the Kyle Stake in Texas. We visited the Yorktown Texas Branch the Sunday before the accident that took Sister Jones. She sat next to us while we ate a Pot luck dinner. She was so kind to us. Many of the members of that wonderful Branch said to me that they were never going to let Elder and Sister Jones go home. They wanted to keep them in their Branch forever. I could tell by her remarks in Relief Society that she loved the Lord and Loved her Time spent in that Branch. I know that they will miss her and Elder Jones. We are glad that we were able to spend time with them . We will never forget that visit.
May the family have the strength to endure this tragic loss.

When I saw a missionary was killed in Texas I read about the fire and that your mother and wife was killed in that fire, a flood of memories came back to my mind. My mother was killed 4 1/2 years ago in a car accident in Florida while serving a mission with my Dad. My heart ached for all of you and your family. I know how you all feel when you received that terriable phone call. I know at this time you are accepting this and then the next minute saying that this is not happening. What made this even more touching is that my mothers name is Ann. I read about your mom and She was so much like my mother. I have read about the way your mom loved to learn. And how she lived the teachings of the Gospel not just taught them. I am sure that all of you will miss her. It will be a difficult time with all of the "first" without her. A very large void. When my mom died I thought that there must be something up that the Lord is planing to take My mom and the other Sister Missionary that was with her. Now calling another great Missionary home I just wonder what is going to happen next. I know that the way that I have kept my mom alive is to do the things that she taught me. My prayers are with all of your family at this very hard and unbelievable time.

Dear Uncle Steve, Todd, Anissa, Mike, Aaron, and Ryan,

We were very touched by the beautiful service for Ann today. It was truly a celebration of a life well lived. I felt her presence in the chapel; she was very pleased and proud of her loving family.

At the time Aunt Ann was serving a mission in Paris, France, my parents and I were graced by her hospitality. I was only four years old, Jack was traveling through on his way to La Rochelle, France, where he was to be stationed next under military orders. A. Ann generously gave up her room and stayed with another missionary companion, not wanting us to stay in a hotel. Something, she may have gotten in serious trouble for doing. She had a remarkably kind and giving nature. Risking quite a bit to do this for her brother and his family. I will always remember A. Ann fondly, as a beautiful person inside and out.

Thinking of you'all with love and heartfelt sympathy. May God bless you in the difficult days ahead.

Love,
Jack and Edith Baker (Midvale, UT.)

I knew Ann when we began working at the temple at the same time. She was quick to learn, patient and kind in all she did while there. I remember once when she said she had such good children and had not had big trouble with them. I was shocked to hear of her passing and how it happened. May you all be blessed and know there are many who loved her whom you may not ever know.

Steve and Family, I am especially shocked and saddened at Ann's passing. What an exemplary person Ann has always been in every way. She has been a part of my life for more years than I can remember. Her sweet spirit and loving demeanor will be missed by all who knew her. May the Lord's sweetest blessings be with you all during this time.

Dear Steve and Family;
Last weekend I was in Utah for the blessing of my new granddaughter, and just by chance, I glanced at a local paper, and saw that a Sr. missionary had died in a Texas fire. I could never have dreamed that it would be Ann. I had just read your blog the previous week, and chuckled at Ann's fears of spiders and critters that invaded your home. I can only imagine her horror at finding a scorpion in the shower. I have only seen you and Ann a couple of times since our mission in France, and I remember her fondly as a dedicated and kind gal.
I am sure that having a non-American companion was not the easiest thing for her. I did things differently, but she never complained.
We know you will all miss her, but also know that you will be reunited someday.
My prayers are with you.
Maria Loyens Murphy.

My condolences to your family. I so enjoyed my association with Sister Jones in our Temple Service. In Ann paying me a compliment when she saw my presentation of Mary Memories, I learned even more of her knowledge and love for gospel truths. She said she liked my presentation because "it came straight from the scriptures." Truly, she was an elect lady.

Ann always had my respect and she was an example to me in desiring to study the scriptures more. I admired her for her knowledge and wanted to attain knowledge myself. Her example taught me how. I will miss her sweetness and further examples but I know she has gone to her great reward and reunited with her baby she has missed for about 40 years. May your faith sustain all of you is my prayer.

I have known Sister Jones for a long time! I have respected her and looked up to her for all she has done for so many people. If anyone was close to perfect it was definitely Ann, I loved and respected her more than words can describe. She was a woman who knew her geneology and loved the gospel and was not afraid to share it. You will be missed Sister Jones!!

Todd and Melissa,
My heart is with your family ... cookies did not seem enough so I wrote you this poem:

Faith Will See You Through
written by Janalea Jeppson 9/28/2011

When someone you love is suddenly gone
and it doesn't make sense
faith will give you strength to stand.
When you question "why?"
faith will be the Comforter's arms around you
assuring you of God's eternal plan.
When you feel abandoned
faith will walk with you,
and you will understand that
you are not alone.
When life goes on and seasons change
and you wonder how it can ...
you will remember
and faith will make those memories sweet
and will feel your soul with peace.
There will be times when the pain of missing
your loved one is so loud that it hurts,
faith will be the balm the heals your soul.
When it doesn't seem fair
and you long for the sound of her voice.
faith will be the music that sings to your heart.
And because of faith you know,
that families are forever,
joy is eternal,
and love is a bond that never ends.
And when all that's left is hope ...
you realize that it is because of faith...
that you have hope.
And you know that she is yours forever.

Todd, I am very sorry for your loss. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. May the good memories carry you through the difficult times both now and in the future.
