Hilda Marie Hicks Richins Obituary
1906 ~ 2012
Hilda Marie Hicks Richins, age 106, passed away on October 30, 2012. She was born on July 17, 1906 in Grantsville, Utah to John U. and Amy Erickson Hicks. She was the oldest of 5 children. She married LaVor W. Richins on January 19, 1941 in Salt Lake City, Utah. They were married 51 years.
Hilda graduated from Grantsville High School in 1924. She paid her own way and worked for her room and board to attend the University of Utah. She attended summer school at the University of California Berkeley and the University of Washington. Hilda graduated from the University of Utah with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1930. She was the oldest living graduate of the University of Utah. She taught Home Economics at Tooele Junior High School and Tooele High School for more than 10 years.
Hilda was a member of Beta Sigma Phi for over 60 years. She also belonged to the Rose Ramblers Garden Club. She had a lifelong love of gardening and had a beautiful rose garden. She also enjoyed sewing, baking, making and selling crafts, reading, walking, and writing and receiving cards and letters. She loved Sunday dinners with her family and spending time with her great-grandchildren. Hilda was a snowbird and spent her winters in Mesa, Arizona for over 35 years. She enjoyed attending the Governor's Century Club of Utah luncheon the past 7 years.
Hilda spent most of her life helping others. She was always very active and enjoyed being around people. She proved you could live to be 106 years old by eating three square meals and a dessert every day. She was very independent, demonstrated a strong work ethic, and always did what needed to be done.
She is survived by her son, Dan (Denise), granddaughters Amy (Brian ) Oliver, Danica (Elar) Jenkins, and four great-grandchildren, Luke, Claire, and Seth Oliver and Axel Jenkins, brother Lowell Hicks.
She is preceded in death by her husband, L.W. "Johnny," infant son, David, brothers, Jay, Blaine and sister, Ruth Russell.
Graveside services will be held at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park on Saturday, November 3, 2012, at Noon. Friends and family may call one hour prior at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 S. Highland Drive, Salt Lake City, Utah.
