Grant John Harris of Spanish Fork, Utah passed away March 22 after a long battle with cancer. He was born in Sutherland, Utah to Earl Tolton Harris and Silva Ann Lovell and was raised in Oak City, Utah.
He served as a fighter pilot in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and was awarded five Navy Air Medals and the Distinguished Flying Cross. He married Helen Jones in the Manti Temple on July 21, 1950, and enjoyed over 62 years of marriage with her before passing away. Grant taught school for 34 years at Rees Elementary in Spanish Fork. He was active in the LDS church and held many positions, including bishop of the Spanish Fork 15th Ward. He and Helen served an LDS mission together to Springfield, Illinois. He served many years in the Boy Scouts of America and in Kiwanis. Grant cared about his wife and family more than anything else in life, and was known as a loving husband, father and grandfather.
Grant is preceded in death by his parents and five of six siblings. He is survived by his wife Helen and their six children Mary Henrie (Earl), Duane (Karen), Janette, Alan (Delores), David (Julie), Richard (Kari); a foster daughter Caroline; a younger sister Diane Porter, 21 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
The family is grateful to A-plus Home Care, Encompass Hospice, and especially the amazing nurses and doctors at the Central Utah Cancer Clinic for the outstanding care that Grant received.
A public viewing will be held on Tuesday, March 26th from 6-8 p.m. at Walker Mortuary, 187 South Main in Spanish Fork. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 27th in the LDS chapel located at 1006 East 200 South in Spanish Fork, with a viewing one hour earlier.
Interment will be at the Spanish Fork cemetery.
