Gerald Harvey Ross M.D. Obituary
Dr. Gerald "Jerry" Ross passed away at home after a brief struggle with cancer. Jerry was born in Sydney, Nova Scotia, to Henry and Norine Ross. In his youth, Jerry was chosen as the sole Canadian delegate to the "New York Herald Tribune World Youth Forum", an international gathering of student representatives from 30 countries. He obtained the rank of Queen Scout in the Boy Scouts in Canada, the Canadian equivalent of the Eagle Scout. Jerry obtained both a Bachelor of Science and a Doctorate of Medicine with distinction from Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia. He met his true love, Heather Marion Pollett on a blind date, set up by her cousins Graham and Bill, and married on August 15, 1970 (later sealed in the Bountiful Temple). After a long period of investigation, he joined the LDS Church in 1976.
He practiced in Family Medicine in Canada and ran both an ER and an ICU until a personal connection directed him towards Environmental Medicine. He became the founding medical director of the Nova Scotia Environmental Medicine Clinic and worked at the Environmental Health Center in Dallas, Texas for 12 years. Jerry was appointed to many posts including President of the American Academy of Environmental Medicine for two terms. He authored or coauthored 29 publications and made over 80 medical and scientific presentations. Jerry and Heather moved to Utah in 1999 and although he was hampered by poor health, he was involved with the Meth-Cops project, testified as an expert witness in several cases and maintained an active role in his faith.
He is survived by his beloved family and friends: his wife Heather, their two sons Graham (Stephanie) and Andrew, granddaughter Kennedy, brother Greg (Sandra), sister-in-law Anne Pollett (Morris Walker), brother -in- law Dr. Harry Pollett (Dr. J. Anne), special friends Marsha and Mike Rapuano, Joe Jordan, Diana and Dan Paxton, Leon Potter, and Marian and Dan Sellers. Jerry was constantly helping people and loved golf, learning and his faith.
