Effie Nielson Obituary

May 20, 1913 ~ December 5, 2013
Salt Lake City, UT-Effie Rozella Olson Nielson, better known as Effie O, passed away in Salt Lake City, Utah on December 5, 2013. Born May 20, 1912 to Daniel Lafayette Olson and Dorothea Nielsen, in Moroni, Utah, she lived a life of love and service to her family and friends, and that included just about everyone.
Effie graduated from Moroni High School and attended Snow College until she married Ray Christian Nielson November 11, 1931 in Bountiful, Utah. Ray passed away June 12, 1999.
She had an enthusiasm and zest for life that infected all around her. She was just as excited about sharing her garden vegetables with her neighbors as she was about sitting next to billionaire Howard Hughes when she received a $25 war bond from actor Caesar Romero for her work performance at Doke Aircraft; having her picture taken with actor Robert Redford; doing push-ups on the David Letterman TV show at age 90, and more push-ups with billionaire Jim Sorensen, who invented the catheter.
She was an accomplished gardener, craftswoman, seamstress, and spent 17 years with Johnson Controls as their office manager. She was deeply involved with the Family History program of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and put together several histories of her family. She is also set 26 state, national, and international weight lifting records at age 90.
Effie was the sole survivor of her family of two brothers (Daniel and Perry), and seven sisters (Callie, Lola, LaRue, Camille, Eveneal, Ruby and Phyllis).
Waiting in the wings to join Effie at a later date is her son Dell Ray Nielson and his wife Penny; four grandchildren; Thomas Aten Nielson, Scotty Lee Nielson (wife Karen), Daniel Ray Nielson (wife Laurie), and Darcy Renae Nielson-Smith (husband Desi); ten great-grandchildren: Michael Thomas Nielson (wife Becky and sons Caleb, Parker, and Declan), Laura Rose Strader (husband Ben and daughter Alivia), Alanna Marie Jeppesen (husband Payton), Ashley Roney (husband Brennon, son Kieron and daughter Eloise), Jason Christopher Nielson (wife Taryn), Chase Dell Ray Nielson, Colby Gunnell, Aubrey Gunnell, Lexie Adel Nielson, Griffin Leigh Nielson-Smith; and four step-grandchildren: Kayla Kramer, Todd Kramer, Kalli Buckley, and Nicki Bergren.
Viewing will be at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 S. Highland, Salt Lake City, Utah, 84106 from 6:30-8 P.M. Friday December 13, 2013. Funeral Services will be held at the LDS chapel, 3179 S. Highland Drive, Salt Lake City, on Saturday December 14, 2013 at 11A.M., with a viewing from 10-10:45 A.M. Burial will be 3:30 P.M. December 14th at the Moroni City Cemetery, Moroni, Utah.

I don't even know what to say, to express the love I and my children have for Gramma Effie would take a book. She just spread cheer to everyone who was blessed to know her, we enjoyed every minute we were able to spend with her. Thank you for sharing her with us. Heaven is a much better place now, and there is much rejoicing as she has returned to her Home above. My dad passed six months ago today, so I understand how you all are feeling. Thank you again, Karilyn

My parents, Morris and Betty Hopkins bought their farm from Ray and Effie. I always heard great stories about both of them. May you find comfort in this time of loss.

One of my favorite people when I visit my Grandma who lived next to you. Loved hearing your stories, and just visiting with you.
