Vernon Smith Obituary
Vernon Dale Smith passed away Monday, December 30, 2013, after a short illness. He was with family at the time of his passing.
Vernon was born January 2, 1926, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Dora Croft and David W. Smith. He graduated from Murray High School and Utah State University, where he completed a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Landscape Architecture. On September 15, 1948, he married Murriel Sorensen in the Salt Lake Temple. Together they raised a family of seven children and built the landscape and nursery business, Millcreek Gardens, Inc. Vernon's plans included employment for his handicapped brother Stephen, other family members, and anyone who needed a job and was willing to work. He and Murriel also welcomed into their home foster children, friends, and relatives who needed a place to stay.
Vernon was active in the LDS church, serving in many capacities including Bishop of the Winder 11th Ward twice. In 1996 to 1997, Vernon and his wife served a mission for the LDS Church in Zagreb, Croatia. Upon their return, he divided his time between helping family members and serving in the LDS Church. His wife Murriel experienced poor health and passed away in 2009. Most recently he served as a Home Teacher.
Vernon and Lynn Huish were married on October 12, 2009, in the Salt Lake Temple. They enjoyed the benefits of a large combined family.
Vernon was preceded in death by his son, Eric Dan Smith. He is survived by a brother, Stanley B. (Marjorie) Smith; children, Catherine (Dave) Gray, Dale (Cynthia), Ruth (Don) MacAngus, Val, Cheerine (Dave) Jordan, LaRene (Robert) Bautner; 26 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.
A viewing will be held Monday, January 6, 2014, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at the Jenkins-Soffe Funeral Chapel, 4760 South State St, Murray, UT 84107. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, January 7, at Noon, at the Winder Eleventh Ward Meetinghouse, 951 East 3825 South, SLC, UT 84106. There will be a viewing prior to the funeral at the church from 10:30 to 11:30 am. Interment will be at the Centerville Cemetery.

My experience of Vern Smith was one of genuine and very kind gentleman, who likely left a lasting impression with all those he made contact with. He introduced me to Jon Huntsman Sr. whom I'm found to be the same sort of of down to earth person, in spite of his vast riches.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family from Rose and I (Brad Lustick). I thought the world of Vern. He was such a kind, loving and giving person. I didn't have the opportunity to meet all of you, but I had the pleasure to make acquaintance with Ruth, Dale and Val.
