Jeffrey Ralph Crane
July 23, 1946 ~ May 5, 2014
Jeffrey Ralph Crane passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones on May 5th, 2014 after a long battle with cancer. He was 67.
Jeff was born in Murray, Utah on July 23rd, 1946 to Afton and Ralph Crane. He grew up in Riverton, Utah where he attended Bingham High School, excelling at both football and academics. He earned a scholarship to and attended the University of Utah earning a degree in Geological Engineering. While at the U he met and fell in love with Nancy Ann Keener. They were married on March 21st, 1969. During and immediately following college he worked for U.S. Smelting Refining and Mining Company as an Exploration Geologist traveling around Utah, Nevada and Arizona gathering and testing samples and generally raising he(ck). After leaving U.S. Mining Company, Jeff joined the Navy as a Seaman Recruit during the Vietnam War, serving with distinction for 23 years. He served on the USS Taussig, USS Luce, USS Tarawa (Plankowner), USS John Rodgers (Plankowner) and the USS Klakring (Plankowner). In 1986, after leaving the Klakring, he moved to shore duty to spend more time with his wife and young son Josh. He was stationed in Seoul, South Korea and worked as a liaison with the South Korean military. While in Seoul, he travelled around Asia with his wife and son, and attended the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games. In 1989 he took on what would be his final post in the Navy, taking command of the Radioman School at the United States Naval Training Center in San Diego, CA. He retired in 1993 at the rank of Lieutenant Commander. During his time in the Navy he earned a master's degree in management. After retiring from the Navy, Jeff settled with Nancy and Josh in Chula Vista, CA.
In 1995 Jeff began his second career, taking a job with the Post Office as a letter carrier. Using a combination of hard work and the management skills he learned in the Navy, he steadily moved from carrier to manager to supervisor working in various post offices across San Diego County. Upon being promoted to supervisor, Jeff confided in his wife that despite his hard work and the measurable improvements he had made to the post offices he managed, he didn't believe he had the social connections or that he'd made the right friends to be named Postmaster. In recognition of his hard work, he was promoted to Postmaster of Lemon Grove, CA on April 26, 2008 and retired in that position in 2010.
Jeff is survived by his wife Nancy Crane, his son Joshua Crane, his daughter Jennie Cameron and his grandchildren Aiden, Adam and Olyver Cameron and his brother and sister-in-law Daniel and Jan Crane and his nieces and nephews and his beagle Zoey.
