A. Workman Obituary

1926 ~ 2014
On the morning of November 28, 2014, Abram Sterling Workman passed away peacefully at the home he had lived in for the past 46 years. The previous day, his large posterity gathered at his home to celebrate Thanksgiving and to spend precious final moments with him. Sterling leaves a legacy of love for the Lord, his family, his country, and the simple joys of life.
Sterling was born in Delta, Utah to John Cornelius and Florence Cook Workman. The fourth of nine children, he lived through the Depression era and acquired a strong work ethic and a compassion for others that would come to define him. He served in the U.S. Navy for 3 years during WWII, and then in South Africa for 2½ years as a missionary. In 1951, he married Colleen Hale in the Salt Lake Temple. They would have six children: Jill Hurst (Mark), Jolene Hurst (Reed), David Workman (Eileen), Dennis Workman (Sherri), Scott Workman (Moana) and Jeff Workman (Julie). As a result of these unions, Sterling has 24 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren.
Sterling served in numerous church callings, including two times as bishop. From 1976-1979, he presided over the Florida Tampa mission, where he and Colleen would forge lifelong relationships with the saints in Florida and the elders and sisters who served during that time. In the final days of his life he received countless visits from former missionaries whose hearts overflowed with love and gratitude for the life-changing influence he had on them. From 1993-1995, he and Colleen fulfilled a service mission in Australia, where they once again were able to ply their talents to bless and uplift others.
Sterling's line of employment was primarily with the Church-a job he enjoyed, but not a job where millionaires are made. Yet when it came to having meaningful relationships with people, Sterling had wealth untold. His formula for success was not something he learned in a book, but came as a result of a naturally pure heart.
Most people knew Sterling as a gifted teacher and engaging speaker. Many remember him as a gardener who paid meticulous attention to details in his Eden on Millstream. Some knew him as a fierce competitor; he played tennis and golf well into his 80s, and could hold his own with opponents half his age. Almost everyone believed Sterling to be without fault, but he frequently enjoyed a glass of Dr. Pepper on the rocks. It was his only vice.
Memorial services will be held Wednesday, December 3, 2014 at noon at the Valley View 4th Ward, 2125 E. Evergreen Ave. A viewing will be held prior to the service from 10:30 to 11:30. There will also be a viewing the evening prior (Tuesday, December 2) from 6-8 pm at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 S. Highland Drive. Special thanks to Nubia and Melissa from Intermountain Home Health for the loving care they rendered Sterling in his final months. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the LDS Church Missionary Fund.

I was just thinking about President Workman and decided to Google his name. I am so saddened to read of his passing, but look forward to the day when we are all together again, serving our last mission on the other side of the veil. My heart goes out to each of you and the loss of my dear friend and mission president.

I am a first cousin to Sterling. His father John Workman was a younger brother to my father Meltiar Hatch Workman. My sister Beth was the same age as Sterling.. They attended school together until John and Florence moved to Salt Lake. She wanted to attend the funeral but was unable to travel to Salt Lake. She wanted me to be sure your family knew of her desires and love. Unfortunately the years have left Julia Hatch and Abram Workman family unfamiliar with each other. I was born in 1940 while my brothers Merlin and Grant were soon in WWII. Apparently Sterling was just going into the mission field in South Africa when my brother Merlin was leaving the South African mission. I met Sterling when I was attending BYU and he was working there. I feel unfortunate that there were so many years between my age and my first cousins so I didn't get to know them better.
Hopefully we can keep in touch with your lovely family. Since Beth lives in Tooele, she knows Sterling's son who lives in Stansbury Park or, rather, I should say she knows his wife.

May the Lord bless you with peace and love.

I served under President Workman as a missionary in the Florida Tampa Mission and grew to love him and Sister Workman. He was able to bring out the best in everyone. I moved to Chicago not long after my mission and didn't get back to Utah for many mission reunions, but I can't tell you how many times I have thought of President and Sister Workman and the wonderful, positive influence they had on me. President Workman was a dynamic teacher, and a humble servant of Christ. What a blessing it was to know him and his sweet wife.

My condolences to his family. You are all so blessed to have had such wonderful parents.

Our love to your family at the time of the loss of your dear father, grandfather and best friend. Served with Sterling in LDSSA and MPMIA. He was a great advocate of young people and gave great advice. He made each situation lighter because of his cheerful, warm personality. May you each feel the comfort of our loving Father at this time of transition.

I am only one of thousands Brother Workman blessed. He ordained me an elder while I was an 18 year old freshman from Wisconsin at BYU in May 1963. I believe he was serving as a Member of the High Council in a BYu stake. Until I became a High Priest, my line of priesthood authority came via Brother Workman. My regards to the family.

A sterling missionary companion, friend, and example. He had a beautiful singing voice as a member of the South Africa Cumorah Quartet. He will always be remembered as my first missionary companion in South Africa and the cheerful attitude he brought into each day. Colleen was the perfect compliment and companion. What a joy it has been to know you both over these many years. My heart felt expression of sympathy to all his family members.
