Richard William Winder, age 90, passed away peacefully May 11, 2015 in South Jordan, Utah. He was born November 24, 1924 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Edwin Kent and Alma Eliza Cannon Winder. He married Barbara Woodhead January 10, 1951 in the Salt Lake Temple.
He graduated from Granite High School and attended the University of Utah and University of Southern California. He was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. During World War II he served in the Marine Corps. After the war, he was a missionary in Czechoslovakia. Upon returning from his mission, he joined the family business, Winder Dairy as a partner. He was also instrumental in the founding of a cemetery, Valley View Memorial Park. He was a director for Walker Bank and 1st Interstate Bank, and was elected to the Granite Board of Education where he served for eight years. He was, also, on the Salt Lake County Library Board for eight years.
An active member of the LDS Church, he had many opportunities. He served as a bishop, stake president, regional representative, and was mission president in California San Diego, Czechoslovakia and Family and Church History at Church Headquarters. He was patriarch for the Saints in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. He was a counselor in the Jordan River temple presidency, served as president of the Nauvoo temple, and served for many years as a temple sealer.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara; children: Richard Jr. (Debi Buchanan), Susan (John S.) Tanner, George (Nancy Parker), Robert (Rosanne Barker); sister, Marion (Willis) Wynn; 15 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Ned and David and three sisters: Barbara, Helen, Kathryn (Blake) Robinson.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 16, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at the River Ridge Stake Center, 10168 South 1000 West, South Jordan, Utah. Viewings will be held at the stake center both Friday evening from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. prior to the service on Saturday. Burial will be at the Valley View Memorial Park 4420 W. 4100 South. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either the LDS Missionary or LDS Temple Funds.
