Carl Hulbert Obituary

1923 ~ 2015
Carl Arthur Hulbert of Salt Lake City, Utah, passed away at home surrounded by his loving family.
Carl, we are sure, was met by the 'love of his life' Kathryn 'Deon' Robinson Hulbert to continue their journey together. Carl was born March 3, 1923, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Effie Lena Erickson and Arthur Davies Hulbert, the third of six children.
Carl attended South High School where he excelled at sports; he was on the All-City Basketball team for 2 years, lettered in Football, Tennis, and Basketball, and later refereed. He served as a Navy Pilot during World War II, upon his return he used the GI Bill to graduate from the University of Utah Law School in 1950. During this time he met Deon; they were married February 12, 1945 in Jacksonville, Florida, the marriage later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. Carl was the youngest Insurance Commissioner in the country, which lead to his lifelong career as an independent Insurance Consultant, working with all the major companies and as Western Counsel for the NAII and Allstate for many years.
Carl and Deon traveled extensively enjoying trips with their family and their many friends around the world. Carl was considered by many as a 'great' friend; he supported and helped many people in his life, staying true to them until the end. As much as he loved his family and friends, sports was a close second. Later golf became his passion; he was longtime member and served as President of the Salt Lake Country Club. He won numerous tournaments and enjoyed hours on the course teaching his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed attending car races with his family, and hunting and fishing with his boys.
Carl was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in various callings and had a strong testimony of the gospel. He had the privilege of baptizing and ordaining many of his grandchildren. Family was paramount to Carl, especially his grandchildren, although he had high expectations he was always present for them and had a special bond with each one. Carl took his job as a father seriously, he gave us guidance and support, encouragement, he had a generous spirit, and most of all he gave us love.
Carl is survived by his children: Kathryn Deon Penske (Roger), their children Mark Hulbert Penske (Lori, one great grandchild), Jay Carl Penske (Elaine, one great grandchild), Blair Hall (Brandon, five great grandchildren); JoAnn Hulbert-Eagan, her daughter Meghan J. Eagan (Ryan Heffernan, three great grandchildren); Steven Carl Hulbert (Cathy); David Robinson Hulbert (Buffy), their children Carl Alexander Hulbert, David Winston Hulbert, Kathryn Elizabeth Hulbert, Helen Lucy Hulbert; Jan Gatrell (Scott), their children Emily Deon Waldbillig (Trygg, three great grandchildren), Tory Hulbert Gatrell (Adriane, three great grandchildren), Jennifer Jan Nish (Martin); Michael Scott Gatrell; Carl Gordon Gatrell (Kelsey, one great grandchild); Shag Hulbert, his two children Carl Arthur Hulbert and Taylor Deon Hulbert; and his sister Eleanor Barker.
Carl was preceded in death by his loving wife Deon, his parents Arthur and Effie, brothers Richard E. Hulbert, Gerald E. Hulbert, sisters Eda Katherine (Bunne) Fine, and Patricia Reynolds. The family would like to extend heartfelt 'Thanks' to those who cared for our Dad, especially Barbara Richardson, and Eric and the late Sue Martin.
The funeral service will be held at Valley View Ward, 2000 E 3900 S, Salt Lake City, Utah, on Friday, November 13, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. His interment will be at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, 3401 Highland Drive, Salt Lake City, Utah.

Even though Mr. Hulbert passed two years ago, I want to say he was one of my favorite guests at the Kahala Hilton Hotel and Kahala Mandarin. We loved to talk sports. We played golf together once on Oahu and he invited me to SLC when I he discovered I was a fly fisherman. What a gem of a human being. I know he will always be dearly and deeply missed. Aloha

Dear Kathy,

Karen Rosevear just sent me your father's obituary and I was sad to hear about his passing. We were out of the country or I would have loved to come. I always remember him being so friendly and nice when we would go over to your home. It hard to believe that you have lost both of your parents. My Mom is still going strong at 103. I can't believe it because my Dad died over 40 years ago. I hope all is well with your family. I still think of our good times in Hawaii and Delta Gamma.

Love,
Jean Bentley

My long time friend Wayne Petty called to tell me of the passing of Carl and as I read the obituary, I began to remember all of the times with all of the Hulberts's on Countryside Drive. "Black Deon,", Kathy (of course), Joann, Stephen, Dave, Jan and....barely...Shag. The chaos, the drama, the laughs, the tears, the frustrations.....all kinds of family "stuff" going on under the watchful eyes of a strong patriarch (Carl) and a very loving mother (Deon). I was so lucky to be a part of much of the craziness of the Hulbert household of the 60's.....so much so that I ended up spending most of the 70's at the University of California where the madness and fun could continue. Carl was such a central figure among a whole group of talented children with acceptance that some of his children would not be like him. He was always gifted at relationship (and golf), and leaves the world a richer place for those he left behind.
I have so many fond memories associated with all of the Hulbert's and hope that shortly, and with a concurrent feeling of the grief of loss, that with a remembrance of the past, a smile comes across your face.
Best. to you all, you were lucky to have such good parents..

I was called by a lifelong friend, Wayne Petty, and informed of the passing of Carl and it brought back such a flood of good memories of him, "Black Deon," and all of the children....Kathy (of course), JoAnn, Steve, Dave, Jan....and, sort of because he was so young, Shag. Thunderbirds, clam dip, laughs, fights, golf, drama....all of it in a family with lots of talent and interesting lives. I have been so blessed to have more than my share of experiences and in so many way, I remember the early years with all of the Hulbert's on Countryside drive with great fondness. Carl was a central patriarch of the family, an ever engaging man with a gift of relationship that never left him, a consistently good golfer that was hard to beat, and a father that was present. It was wonderful to be able to glimpse at the changes in each of the "children" since the late 60's (uh, 50 years ago) and relive some of those Hulbertesque memories.
You were all lucky to have him for so long, I hope in his passing, the wonderful memories of those great years you spent together will flood back and bring a smile...

Best to the family
