Richard Goddard Obituary

1926 ~ 2016
Richard Calvin Goddard, 89 passed away peacefully on March 1, 2016 of natural causes. He was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on May 22, 1926 to Ida Marie Skillicorn and Harold Grover Goddard. He married Jean (Jeannie) King on June 12, 1952 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.
Richard grew up in Salt Lake City with one sister (Dorothy) and three brothers (Doug, Harold (Jr.) and Jack). He graduated from Granite High School in 1944. Shortly after graduating he enlisted in the army and entered World War II. As part of his military service he was sent to Germany. He arrived in Germany on May 7, 1945, the day Germany surrendered. He always joked by saying: "They knew I was coming."
After his military services he served a full time mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the Western States Mission. He has served faithfully in The Church ever since. His greatest service happened in the Salt Lake Temple where he served as a temple worker for over 20 years. Unfortunately, he recently had to give this up because of his failing health.
For many years he worked alongside his sweetheart at Rex Williams and Sons. Upon retiring he spent many more years at her side as she ran a Sr. Professional Golf Tournament in Park City, Utah. Just prior to Jeannie's passing, they celebrated 50 wonderful years of marriage. They were avid golfers who found joy in spending time together, with their friends and especially with their family. They loved their children, their children's spouses, their grandchildren and their great grandchildren. They have left a great legacy.
Richard is survived by his children, Teri (Craig) Maher, Scott (Marie), Calee (Preston) Tholen, Trent (Joy), Guy (Kim), 15 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren (with 4 on the way). He was preceded in death by his parents, all of his siblings, his wife, and a grandson. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 5, 2016 at the Fortuna Ward building, 4407 So. Fortuna Way (3600 E.). A Viewing will be held on Friday, March 4, 2016 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Fortuna Chapel, and on Saturday, March 5, 2016 from 10:00-10:45 a.m. prior to the service.

After all these years Jeannie and Richard are clearly visible in my memories. They have not faded. Their positive impressions on my life and on golf in Utah are permanent. Jeannie was an unusual women, and her efforts would not have happened without the supportive attitude of Richard. He was a man who was way ahead of his time in honoring women and freeing them to accomplish great things that previous generations did not enjoy.

They marched in step together in perfect cadence. I feel them here with me as I write this note.

I hope everything is good with the Goddards. I admired them and they enriched my life and made me a better person.

Savor the birdies,

Joe Watts

Sorry Richard passed on, he was a great man. He was an outstanding referee/umpire. I could always count on him and appreciate his help. May our Heavenly Father bless and comfort his loving family. I'm sure he was happy to have such a great bishop!

On behalf of all the former staff and volunteers of the Utah Golf Association we extend our sympathy to the daughters and sons of the Goddards on the passing of your father. He was a great man and he enriched the lives of everyone he associated with.

We dedicated a girls golf tournament to Jeannie and it has been conducted annually since her too early passing. It is title the Jeannie Goddard Memorial Tournament and we always take a moment at the tournament to honor Jeannie.

We loved them both and are appreciative of the unselfish service they gave to golf and more specifically to the Utah Golf Association.

Richard had a soft and tender heart and a wonderful wit. Richard and Jeannie will be happy to once again hold hands after such a long separation.

Dear Family,
Glade and I were sorry to hear of the passing of your dear father but know he is in a much better place and with Jeannie. They were such dear friends for years and we had many fun vacations and golf outings together. Glade spent a couple of hours with your Dad at the end of the year and had a nice lunch and visit with him. As we are in St. George we will be unable to be at the funeral but will have a prayer for your family and know you are all at peace because of his good life and great example to all of you. Much love to all of you. Glade and Merlene

Hey Goddard Gang, I am a much better person by knowing your Dad. He always treated me kindly and had the best sense of humor of anyone I knew. I am so blessed to have had a closer relationship with him more than some and glad I got to see him not too long ago. He's probably laughing right now but in the arms of his sweetheart. Best to you and your families during this difficult but glorious time.

Dearest Cousins and Family,
We are so saddened to hear of Uncle Richard's passing. Our love is great for this sweet and humble man who will live on in our hearts forever. We have many special memories of all of you and your parents as we visited in your home often for family gatherings. Uncle Richard always had a special story to tell or a short joke delivered soberly. It caused you to think about what he said before you realized he was being funny! Just so you know, we have shared those funny things with others over the years with much laughter. We moved away from Utah in 1977 so traveled far to attend our family reunions. Your parents were always there and made sure they visited with each of us. We love you guys so much.

I remember special events in my childhood where Uncle Richard stood in for my father at my first Daddy-Daughter date; playing tennis in teen-age years and always being a perfect gentleman. His example to us is treasured. Bless you all, we have missed your mother so much and think of the joy they are having together now. With much love, from the Mitchells (41) in Arizona

Dear Teri, Scott, Calee, Trent, Guy,

You all are like brothers and sisters to me, we grew up together and I remember many wonderful times in your home. I hope that in the coming days you will find peace and know that your Mom and Dad are together again. I will always remember your Dad and his dry sense of humor and wonderful outlook.

Love you guys,

Alan & Julie Seyboldt
