Vaughn Featherstone Obituary

1931 ~ 2018
Elder Vaughn J. Featherstone, 87, Emeritus General Authority for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his family and in the arms of his eternal companion, Merlene, on Saturday, May 12, 2018.
Elder Featherstone, 'Big V', was born March 26, 1931 in Stockton, Utah to Emma Marie Johnson Featherstone and Stephen Elvin Featherstone Sr. He was the third child of eight with five brothers and two sisters. He was married and sealed to his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Merlene Miner, on September 15, 1950 in the Salt Lake Temple. They have six sons, one daughter, their seven spouses, and 133 grandchildren and great grandchildren at last count.
To those who knew and loved him Big V was larger than life. He was 'a man's man' who loved the outdoors, hiking the Wasatch Mountains, taking a long drink from a clear stream, and swimming in any pond, lake, or river he could find. He was an honorary member of every Polar Bear Club he encountered. He deeply loved his children and grandchildren. He prayed for them nightly and cherished them daily. He and 'Mother Mer' gathered their family to their home and pasture where they hosted countless gatherings, cookouts, games, and challenges. Two favorite events were the annual Memorial and Labor Day sleepovers with midnight cereal parties and breakfast pancakes 'as big as your face.' The young couple that started with nothing gave everything.
Our dad loved poetry, quotes, and the great thoughts and words of others. He constantly sought greatness in his life. He developed his own 'system' for memorization. Once, upon being asked how long it would take to say all the things committed to memory he shared that it was his goal to be able to recite from sunrise to sunset. He inspired a generation with his favorite stories and poems, including: The Touch of the Master's Hand, The Five Dollar Job, I'm Glad I Rubbed Shoulders With You, Invictus, Reply to Invictus, The Stonecutter, The Champion, The Torchbearer, and Les Miserable. He has left us a legacy of this world's best thought. Word-by-word, day-by-day, and deed-by-deed he became the words and prose that meant so much to him.
Dad will be forever remembered as the boy who chose to wear nurses shoes rather than miss going to church; the boy who spent hours cleaning the kitchen and scrubbing piles of dishes for his mom and 'did it for love'; the boy who wanted to pray on Thanksgiving Day and lost his appetite when prayer was neglected; the boy who bought a Bible with the only nickel he had long before he could read because it made him 'feel good' doing what he felt God would want him to do. Of all the wonderful things said about him the thing that meant the most was being told he was 'a good boy' because that's what his mom expected of him.
Dad adored his Heavenly Father and His Beloved Son whom he found, loved, and trusted with all his heart. He lived his life according to the two great commandments-love of God and love of others. He cherished all scripture but especially the Book of Mormon, which he read anew every year of his life. He was known as a 'Champion of Youth.' He loved the Lord's anointed servants-The Brethren with whom he served, with all his heart. They are kindred spirits and he will honor and love them forever. He was ever humbled to even be in their midst.
He lived his life with zest, enthusiasm, heart, vision, and love. The three words of scripture that define him best are "charity never faileth." He was born humble and he left us humble. The hallmark of his life was his humility. We will always remember our beloved father as 'endlessly, foolishly, incredibly merciful.'
Elder Featherstone's employment for 26 years was in the grocery business-an industry requiring hard work and a commitment to service-both of which he was well qualified. He began as a produce stocker and rose to the executive level as Corporate Training Manager for Albertsons Inc. He served as Chairman of the National Produce Executive Committee for Supermarket Institute.
Prior to being called to the Presiding Bishopric of the LDS Church in 1972 he served as scoutmaster twice, explorer leader, high councilor four times, in a ward bishopric, and as Stake President of the Boise North Stake. In 1956 he was called to serve as the Priest Quorum Advisor to 23 young men in the Boise 9th Ward. Like Helaman, he called them sons and he loved and maintained contact with them throughout his life. In his words, 'there is a sacred bond between us.'
He served on the Young Men's General Board and the Priesthood Missionary Committee. In 1976 he was called to serve in the First Quorum of the Seventy and was simultaneously assigned to preside over the Texas San Antonio Mission, a blessing for which he will always be grateful. The missionaries of the TSAM are dear to the heart of their shepherd president who will cherish their friendship forever.
While serving in the Seventy, Elder Featherstone served as the General Church Young Mens President and as President of six areas, including: Southeast, Caribbean, Utah South, North East, Philippines/Micronesia, Pacific Islands, Australia/New Zealand. He also served as Logan Temple President from 2002 - 2005.
Elder Featherstone always had a deep love for young men. His experience with the Boy Scouts of America began as a young boy lying belly-down on the grass watching the local troop meet through the basement window of the old Richards Ward building. In time, he earned his Eagle rank on the way to serving on the Boy Scouts of America National Board, as Advisory Council Chairman of the National Camping Committee, and Chairman of the Philmont Scout Ranch Committee. During his lifetime of service he was awarded the Silver Beaver, Silver Antelope, Silver Buffalo, Distinguished Eagle Scout Award, and Spurgeon Award for exploring. He served as the National Jamboree Commissary Chairman where they served a million meals over 10 days and raised $335, 000 worth of food in kind. He served as Chaplain General at a National Scout Jamboree and as National Chaplain at a World Jamboree in Australia. In 1974 he was awarded the Utah Father of the year award. He also received the Patriotic Award from BYU Military relations and was recipient of the Freedom Festival Award in Provo in 2008.
Elder Featherstone was preceded in death by his brothers, Ron, Kenny, and Steve; his oldest son, Ronald Vaughn Featherstone, his beloved mother, Emma, and Bear-the golden retriever that loved them. One of the last things said to him in this life was our mom whispering in his ear to go and be with his mother for Mothers Day-a final request that was honored.
He is survived by David James Featherstone (Laura), Joseph M. Featherstone (Marianne), Jeffery Scott Featherstone (Lori), Lawrence Featherstone (Laurel), Jill Featherstone Taylor (Brian), and Paul Thomas Featherstone (Meredith).
The family wishes to thank the dear doctors and nurses of Aspen Healthcare, Rocky Mountain Personal Care, and DMBA. From the first day to the last they cared for our father as the Savior would. We are indebted to them for the kindness, respect, and goodness.
In lieu of flowers and gifts, our dad would want you to spend time with your families. He would tell us to love the people we love as much as we can while we can. He is our hero. He will ever remain larger than life to us. Lastly, he would say: "If I could choose from every woman who breathes on this earth, the face I would most love, the smile, the touch, the voice, the heart, the laugh, the soul itself, every detail and feature to the smallest strand of hair-they would all be Merlene's."
There will be a viewing at Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple from 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 17, 2018. There will also be a viewing from 10:00 a.m. - 11:15 a.m. at the Bountiful Regional Center at 835 N. 400 E, North Salt Lake, prior to the funeral, which will begin at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, May 18, 2018.

I adored Elder Featherstone. I bought a recording of his talk entitled "Acres of Diamonds". I must have listened to that talk hundreds of times and even based a talk and lesson after its theme. During an extremely low point in life, I penned a letter to Elder Featherstone, never expecting any response. Two weeks later there was a book he'd written and a personal message of hope and encouragement from him. I will always be grateful for such a charitable servant of our Heavenly Father.

I know this is 5 years since Elder Featherstone“s passing but I would like to add a remembrance of how he touched my life. I grew up in Texas in a family of seven children that struggled financially. I remember attending an evening fireside at our brand new chapel in Killeen, Texas and had a hard time trying to get someone in my family on the phone to come pick me up afterwards. Nearly everyone had gone home and there I sat on the curb, a 16 year-old girl waiting for a ride to show up and I heard a voice behind me. I looked up and it was Elder Featherstone. He patiently sat and talked with me for a long time until my ride showed up. I will never forget his kindness! Years later I was able to attend general conference for the first time at the tabernacle and here came Elder Featherstone down the aisle shaking hands and greeting people. When he came to our row, he reached way in to shake my hand and addressed me by name. I was so surprised that he remembered me and my name! I really love him!

Here's a man I will greatly admire always, as I served a mission with him & Merlene in Sydney Australia Temple. I marveled at the way he could remember things, and love listening to the stories he related.

He came to our Ogden Institute Retreat, where he instructed us and gave advice. I appreciated his knowledge and willingness to be with us, as a group of young single adults. I have enjoyed The Light of Hope, a book that he wrote. It is evidence of his studies.

I realize this is very late but i feel i need to do this for a man who i loved and adored - he was our Area President and he called me to be a stake president in Suva Fiji. He is the most gentle and lovable man I have met. When I was in his presence i felt i was cared for and appreciated despite my short falls. He was a wonderful story teller and his ability to memorize and quote long passages of scripture and wise quotations was admirable. I could listen to him speak for hours and whenever he spoke in church i did not want him to end. He was truly a man of God in every way...His wife was his best friend and their love for each other radiated in a very holy and dignified way. They standout to me as pure and beautiful people...I thank God for Elder Featherstone and look forward to being in his presence again to feel his warmth, love and friendship.

RIP Elder.

He taught me, helped me, encouraged me, and inspired me by his example as well as his words. I owe so much of the blessings I've enjoyed over the past 41 years to him since he was my mission president in San Antonio. His influence is still felt by me today. Sitting on the porch counting my blessings, I felt to write him a letter of appreciation again, only to find out he passed over a year ago. My heart aches at his passing. President, I will not leave my chair empty and will look forward to seeing you again. Thanks for everything.

I loved E. Featherstone, he came to my mission in the DR back in 1984 when I was serving as a ZL. As luck would have it... I was giving training on faith to a group 12 missionaries and he sat in on the mtg. What a humble/gentle giant, made me feel so comfortable.

One of the very best!

Sister Featherstone and family. I was so sorry to hear of President Featherstones passing. You both helped me so much in the Philippines when I needed it most. I will never forget your kindness. I would love to come visit you in Utah when I am there this summer. Just let me know how I can get ahold of you.

For the family, here's perhaps an unknown story about Elder Featherstone, the life-long learner. In the 1970s he wanted to learn to play the piano so that when he visited an area he could play a hymn if there was no one there who could. For a period of time he came to my office on the 20th floor of the Church Office Building once a week at 6:00 am for music lessons (using the Church's Basic Music Course) until he had reached his goal--to be able to play a couple of hymns, including "Ye Elders of Israel."

I will always remember and look up to President Vaughn Featherstone and his family. I was pretty young when he served in the Boise Idaho North Stake and I remember hearing his stories not only during conferences but also retold by his son David the best early morning seminary teacher ever. I remember Laura as our camp director and Dave and Joe helping her in that capacity. I will be honored to share his legacy with my family be it through the story of the nurse's shoes and our family's love of Les Miserables... Thank you for all you have done in blessing others and building the kingdom.

Please accept our condolences from the Ted Sperry family. I always loved to hear from Bishop Featherstone. He visited my mission in Australia and it was such a neat deal to have a visiting General Authority and family friend come. My dad(Ted Sperry) talked many times about the Richards Ward family and the scouting program of which he was a part. I felt like I knew Bishop Featherstone personally because of his help and answers to gospel questions that some of our investigators had. I don't think I can express enough appreciation to Bishop Featherstone and your family for sharing him with us through his service to our Heavenly Father. He was such a gospel scholar and dedicated servant. He was always so full of energy and love. Please accept my sincere sympathies to your family for your loss. God Bless you.

To President Featherstone's family. In reading all of the messages about Vaughn and his church assignments very little has been said about his working profession. I first remember him in the early 60's when we had the big earth quake in Cache Valley. He was the district produce supervisor for Albertsons. He came to Logan rolled up his sleeves and dug into the broken glass, and all the stuff that was in the isles that was such a mess. That's the kind of person he was. He always went the second mile as fart as I could see and then went the 3rd & 4th mile. He was a great asset to Albertson's. He really helped Albertson's to grow. He was as great at Albertson's as he was at his church callings. I was especially close to him when he was President of the Logan Temple. I found out he really liked raisin filled cookies so I would take some to him once in a while. I've know him for 61 years and will miss him. May God Bless you and your family.

Dear Sister Featherstone
I was so sad to hear of Elder Feathers passing. He has been a blessing to me from the day I first saw him. Through the many months of Seminary to the visits at Albertsons and the visits at the Church Office Building. You both have been such an example to my family. I will always remember how excited he was when I made his scout quilt for him. And the wonderful blessing he gave my daughter after September 11th. May you find comfort in the blessings of knowing you will be with him again for the eternities I love you.

We love each of you, his family members. His obituary says what we feel in our heart such a great and yet humble man. We are so blessed to be associated with him, and with you in any way. May we all continue to be blessed by his wonderful example until we meet again.

Elder Featherstone had to be the most influential mortal in my father's life. The stories my father told me about him growing up with "Vaughn" were amazing and funny. My father played, served, and worked alongside him with Albertsons. Vaughn inspired my father to be better at everything from sports to priesthood responsibilities, and most importantly, his spiritual influence in my fathers life. This not only made my father a better man, but has made me try to become a better person. When your father gives you the name of his amazing friend, you feel an obligation to honor him by being better. Elder Featherstone's legacy has influenced countless people and he will continue to inspire others. My deepest sympathy and thanks go out to Merlene and family.

To the Vaughn J. Featherston Family: Thank you for sharing him with all of us. Elder Featherstone was my mission president for three months in Texas. He was an emblem and servant of the Lord that exemplified His pure love. While my time under Elder Featherstone's leadship was not that long, it was experiential in preparing me for the remainder of my mission in Brazil and for life. It was my personal trial back then to become to deathly sick, and he visited me in the hospital. I was too sick to send home. Through the fasting and prayers and the priesthood blessing of faith of the missionaries, under his leadership, I was healed. I witnessed pure charity and sacrifice in action by him and through him again and again to the missionaries and the People of Texas. Love Bro Russ

Our Hero...Elder Featherstone....How we will miss our friend. Elder Featherstone gave me a beautiful written blessing as my husband was serving in Scouting...we had seven young son's and 1 daughter. I remember how personal and loving the blessing was so many years ago...and how those blessings have been realized as my children have become adults and "leader's of Youth".... We shared many inspirational times together as we traveled to Regional Scout meetings promoting Varsity Scouting. He will always remain our "Hero"...and I'm so grateful for the many books he published that will continue to inspire the youth of today.

Our love to the Featherstone family,...

Sincerely,

Merlene, We're so sorry for your loss. I've been trying to find the words to express our love, gratitude and amazing blessing you and Vaughn have been to Pete, myself and our children. Our favorite memory is of Vaughn planting tulip bulbs for you one year because he wanted to surprise you when they bloomed. He was going to be away as he often was at that time. They bloomed in the shape of a red heart. I think Heather was just 6yrs old when she came back across the street from helping him and said Vaughn's so cute! We love you and you're always in our thoughts and prayers, Pete and Sandy Atkinson

I am so grateful for Elder and Sister Featherstone and the time they spent in the Philippines. I was a missionary who served there from 1991-1992. I had the great blessing of interacting with them. I had been in the country for 6 weeks and I got dengue fever. Sister Featherstone came to visit me in the hospital, it meant so much to me. After that Elder and Sister Featherstone would check on me during mission visits. I was extremely fortunate to receive a blessing from Elder Featherstone. That blessing helped me through the end of my mission and when I had to go home early. I was emergency flown home because my body was fighting a few parasites. President Lyons was told I would not get well in the Philippines. Sister Featherstone was instrumental in finding the doctor who helped me heal from the parasites. I will forever be grateful for my association with Elder and Sister Featherstone while serving my mission in the Philippines, San Fernando Mission. Their love for the missionaries was felt by all.

With much love,

The Featherstone family moved to our street (3350 South, SLC), when I was about 8 years old and they were one of two families I felt comfortable with. Vaughn was our family's home teacher and I was greatly honored when he gave me a store bought cake for my birthday.

However, ALL the neighborhood children were astounded with the Easter Egg hunts Vaughn hosted in the fields behind the Featherstone's house. Our baskets overflowed with goodies! Best of all, for months afterwards, as we played in the fields, we occasionally came upon an undiscovered 10 chocolate bunny still in it's wrapper or some other store bought delight.

Yes, the Featherstones gave us treasures that would last long after they moved! I hope to give the generous warmth to children that I experienced from the Featherstones in my childhood.

Besides the Savior and my father, no other man had a greater impact or influence on my life than Vaughn J Featherstone. His teachings and example have been a beacon and a voice to me all of my life. To Merlene and the Featherstone family - God Bless you, and thank you for allowing so many of us to "rub shoulders" with your husband and father. We love you President!

I once gave Elder Featherstone a gift of some Eskimo dolls that I had treasured. I had no money and wanted to give him something special. He graciously accepted my "previously loved" dolls as though they were gold and throughout the years, mentioned that they were special to him. He made my simple offering seem glorious.
He has taught me so much over the years through his gentle words and actions. He is a true and humble servant of the Lord that must have been welcomed with open arms. Love you forever! ā¤

I got to know the Featherstones when we moved into their neighborhood when I was just a boy. The associations and friendships have always been deeply appreciated. I knew even then that I was brushing up against greatness. Years later I discovered that both Vaughn and Merlene had prayed for me by name almost every day of my mission to a difficult and dangerous place. Imagine that, praying daily for an awkward and gangly neighborhood kid. Only then did I begin to realize the depth of that greatness. With all our love and support we pray for you and your family now.

Dear Merlene and family, So sorry to hear of the passing of your husband and father. My name is Camille(Miner)Salmond and my dad (Wallace)was cousins with Merlene. Your parents visited my dad many times, but one I remember was at Wasatch Villa on 3300 South before his death many years ago. My dad thought the world of you, and was blest to have know you. I've been introduced, I think several times, but wished I had know you both on a more personal level. It will be a joyous reunion in heaven for sure. I just had a quick text today from a cousin (Richard Miner's daughter) who said she had a dream where both her mother and my mother were taking a walk together in heaven on Mother's day. What a sweet dream. Can you just imagine all the sweet meetings?
With love,

Condolences to the Featherstone family. What a great man. His conference talks and books were a great influence on me when I first joined the church. It was my privilege to serve with Scott Featherstone in the Arizona Holbrook Mission. Such great memories of him quoting so many inspiring poems and passages, as his Father taught him. What a great posterity he leaves for a short time as he reunites with his ancestors. Best of wishes to you all.

President Featherstone was my mission president. I was privileged to serve as the Financial Secretary in the Mission Office under him and came to love him without limit. As a new convert in 1974, Elder Featherstone was very visible to me. He not only wrote about Commitment, but understood it well. Given his life, there is no sadness with his sojourn through the veil. The infirmities of his mortal tabernacle are now lifted and he can again experience more fully on the other side of the veil as President Nelson character death as but a birth.

Elder Featherstone, thanks for your great example of love and devotion to your mother. She was an amazing lady, and I so enjoyed being with her and my Grandma Ferguson on many occasions when they were no longer able to drive. I was so blessed to have you seal me in the temple and give me the opportunity to be with my children forever. You are such a great example of overcoming and making the best of a bad situation growing up. I will be grateful to you for taking my primary children on a tour of Pres Kimball office, something we all cherished. Give you sweet mom, Sis Emma a big hug from me.

I was a very young Elder's President when we lived in Meridian, Idaho and part of the Boise North Stake at the time. I fondly remember the monthly training meetings with President Featherstone. It was such a wonderful experience to sit at his feet and be taught by example. He had the "ministering" philosophy even back in the 1970's. Thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends.

I served in TSAM with the greatest mission president, President Featherstone. Many things he taught us, I have used in working with the youth and Young Adults of the Church. Through the years, we ran into each other and I always received one of his great bear hugs. He was kind to our children who went to Utah State in Logan while he was temple President. Im glad our family touched shoulders with him. He is a true Champion.

My favorite story of him will always be about the nurses shoes. I've thought about this story often and the faith and courage Elder Featherstone had throughout his life. What an amazing example he set by always choosing Jesus Christ no matter the circumstance. Praying you will all have peace during this time.

Oh how we love the Featherstone Family!! We loved rubbing shoulders with you in the Ward in Sandy years ago.

Merlene, you have always been a wonderful strong faithful friend to me and to John. Our prayers and thoughts are with you always.

I will never forget Bro. Featherstone's kind tender mercy to me while I was in the hospital many years ago. He took time out of his very busy schedule to visit with me in the hospital and let me know that the ward was fasting and praying but that my name was in the temple with the Prophet and the brethren for their prayers.

We have never met a more kind loving couple than the two of you. All our love and hugs, John & Jennie Green (We're so grateful we have a link to your family - Scottie & Chandi)

Bro. Featherstone is truly one of the greats. He was a man who talked the talk and walked the walk. What a great example of the Saviors love. He will be missed. Sending love to his beautiful Merlene and his family.

A man whose legacy will always be the lives he touched and the positive influence he had on so many who just needed a smile, a hug, or an encouraging word. To those of us who were in San Antonio during his ministry as the mission president, his presence there was a turning point in many of our lives; he helped us to see the beauty of the gospel and the joy of life itself. President Featherstone, along with many others, I'm glad I rubbed shoulders with you.

President Featherstone was a great example of Christlike living throughout his life. He was my Stake President in Boise and took an interest in me and all of the youth of the Stake. He helped me in teen years and treated me like one of his sons. I loved his messages as a leader and was inspired by them. He continued to be my friend and to teach me when I would see him often in the Draper temple. I love the Featherstones and know they will find comfort in the faith and legacy of their Patriarch.

To Dearest Merlene,

It was one of the highlights of our lives to have been your neighbors many years ago at Bell Canyon Acres. You blessed the lives of my parents and siblings over and over again. We recognized the immense love you had for each other and the gospel. You gave us an example of which had never been seen before. We knew you would give ALL for the Savior, and you did. May His loving arms be around you at the passing of a true giant among us.

Love Always,

Truly one of the most influential people in my life. He and his wonderful wife Merlene have blessed many, many lives - mine included. It is so comforting to know that life is eternal, that death does not terminate our existence, and that the greatest joys between friends and family can be carried on beyond the grave. May our Heavenly Father continue to bless you, our dear friends. Patrick and Adele Casaday
