Griffin, Willis Dean
Willis Dean Griffin December 5, 1933 - August 5, 2015 Willis Dean Griffin was born December 5th, 1933 to Paul and Florence Edna Griffin on a farm in Craig, Missouri. He was the sixth of nine children, and the first boy. Willie's older sisters adored him and were delighted to finally have a little brother. His family moved to Victorville in 1942, where heattended Victor Elementary School. At age 17, Willie contracted polio and spent several weeks in the hospital. He recovered enough to return to school, and received his diploma in a wheelchair. After high school, Willie received an internship at McDonnell-Douglas in Long Beach, where he participated in a program designed to enable adults with disabilities to pursue careers in the aviation industry. After one year, he was employed by General Dynamics, where he began to learn drafting and design. He eventually moved back to Victorville with his family and opened his own company, Victor Valley Design and Drafting. He designed several buildings throughout the Victor Valley, including the Bud Mac building in Apple Valley and Victor Valley Mortuary, and too many homes to be counted. Willie married Mabel Wallace, and they had two children, Nancy Lynn and Joseph Dean. He later married Dawna Gillespie, and gained two stepsons, Chris and Bryan. Willie and Dawna enjoyed many happy years of marriage, and were blessed with many grandchildren, who they adored. Willie was preceded in death by his parents, Paul R. and Florence E. Griffin, and his sisters Wilma Galey, Ann McMahon, Lila Gossard, and Shirley Kay Griffin. He is survived by his loving wife, Dawna Griffin; his children Nancy (Ed) Correia, Joseph Griffin, Chris (Angela) Gillespie, and Bryan (Wendy) Gillespie; his sisters Virginia Laprise and Dorothy Seals; his brothers Gary (Diane) Griffin and Carl Griffin; 14 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. In addition, he has many nieces, nephews, and cousins who will miss him dearly. Special thanks go to his son-in-law, Ed Correia, for the extra care and loving attention he gave in taking care of Willie in his final days. Willie was one of the most optimistic, tenacious people you could ever know. His many healthproblems through the course of his life gave him a determination that is matchless. He used them as a catalyst to move forward and attain his goals. He had an incredible sense of humor, and he never complained. He always had a twinkle in his eye and a funny story to tell. He will forever be in our hearts. Services will be held Tuesday, August 11, 2015 at Victor Valley Mortuary on 11th Street at 11:00 am; viewing will be at 10:00 am.
